Story:
Her eyes glinted in the early sun. "Rhythm!" She perked up at the chipper, cheeky voice from a young girl. Rhythm snorted and went to the fence, peeking over. On her tippy-toes, the girl raised her hand to look at the chestnut mare. Listen to Your Own Beat's sire had been owned by the girl's family, and now Rhythm had been given to the youngest child. Her name was Ally; she was just barely nine. The young mare gave Ally a gentle shove, and the girl immediately broke into a fit of giggles.
Rhythm's floppy, glinting mane jerked to the side, body following. Ally clamored to the top of the fence and jumped onto Rhythm with a thump. The mare grunted but began to walk. Ally opened the fence door and guided Rhythm out slowly. The mare trotted out slowly, and the two went down a beaten path slowly. The girl urged her faster until they were running at full acceleration. Rhythm and Ally had a bond.
But it all happened fast. A scream sounded from the forest, and Rhythm scrambled and tripped in shock. She ran onto the road, only so tumble over suddenly as she tripped on a rock. Pain and fear flourished from her and she gasped. Ally squeaked in pain, and the mare dimly felt horror and deep pain radiating from her rider, and she also felt her leg beneath her. There was a honk and the scream of brakes. Rhythm could barely raise her head, and her eyes lit up with fear as she saw a semi-truck speeding towards her and poor Ally. The driver's eyes were wide, his hands clearly shaking on the wheel. He mouthed 'move!' through the glass as his brakes left dark black marks on the asphalt's surface. Rhythm scrambled to stand, leg that she tripped herself up and landed on aching with effort. Suddenly, the semi hid their shapes as it finally stopped, back end sliding around so it blocked the whole road. Cars screeched to a halt and honks erupted like a whole choir. The driver of the semi ascended his truck, eyes red and clearly fearful. He looked under his car desperately, but was surprised to see nothing below. Well, except the few droplets of blood.
Hands sweating, the man ran to the other side. A heard popped up, one of a horse's. It was Rhythm's. She snorted and seemed to be paying attention to her curved stomach. The man ran to her, followed by multiple bystanders whose cars were parked on the road. As they neared, it could be seen that the mare was visibly wrapped around a small lump. Untwisting her legs, she looked as the form. Ally's unconscious, but untouched shape was silent and softly laid on the grass. Listen to Your Own Beat nuzzled her with a motherly softness, and her eyes darkened as Ally was slowly lifted away. She tried to followed, but her leg awkwardly swept from under her and she crashed back to the ground.
A yell came, and Rhythm pricked her ears. Ally's elder sister came scrambling across the pavement. Aleesha, was her name, gasped as she saw Ally and the mare. She ripped out her phone and chattered a bit, then put it down and quickly called another number. Within a minute or two, the wails of sirens pounded in Rhythm's ears. A trailer and Ally's parents' familiar truck pulled up, and their shapes came running across the street. As the ambulance screeched to halt and paramedics came running out with a stretcher, Rhythm felt Ally's hand on her muzzle, just barely conscious on the stretcher. "Thank you," her croak was barely audible. The mare nuzzled her face and whinnied as she was picked up and disappeared in the ambulance. The wails echoed around as it screeched away.
It was then like a dream. The vet had come for Rhythm. There was a dull pain in her shoulder, and then the world faded to a dizzying black.
--------------::::::::::::::::::::--------------
It was months later when Rhythm hobbled from the barn. After her leg had been found to be fractured, and had been a long road to recovery. Ally had come each day to feed the mare carrots, telling her how sorry she was and how everything would be okay. The mare would simply grunt and nuzzle the girl. All Ally had gotten was a couple nasty scratches and bruises, and some bad headaches. Everyone had said that Rhythm was a hero. She was even in the news and the papers. The mare was a hero, though. Ally would've died without her. Even the driver of the semi-truck came to see the family and their horse.
Family was in and out as the mare recovered, and now everyone was there to see her walk out. Ally ran to hug her. She squealed and threw her arms around Rhythm's neck. She reached to nuzzle the girl, before limping to the grass. She lowered her head to eat, eyes shining. The mare glanced to the family, flopped tussock swept to the side of her head. Rhythm shrugged, snorted, and ate again. Ally erupted with those melodic giggles, and the rest of the family soon did, too.
