He is very shy around other horses and is usally picked on. He is a little fighter, and through all of those aweful moments in his life he is the most loyal horse at Cottonwood Ranch. Now you may say, "What do you use him for? He is not a comp horse because he is afraid of large crows and unknown horses, and he does not have all that much of a striking horse in him to a breeding stallion, after all, he would probably run away from the mare."
All of this is true. So what will I do with him?
Find out in the story below...a r t
s t o r y"$25, will I hear $50?? Ah, their we go, $50, what about $75, will I hear a $75?"
The auctioneer was pounding away when I walked into the room. $150.
Their goes a nice horse. Luckily the horse butcher did not bid higher. The poor creature walked off, limping, with a gash in his side, I felt like crying, I am so glad their are some people who will TRY to save these poor horses, I had to leave earlier when a young but almost dead horse was sold to the butcher. I can only take in one today and I had my heart set on a young dapple grey filly, who was coming in next.
She came in her coat dull yet her head held high, her eyes shined bright and she looked well enough fed, she saw all of the people and did a hop in the air. "Pretty young Lassie we got here." said the auctioneer just a little too fast. " Let me see a $75 on her"
Someones hand raised faster than a bullet, the little girl in front of me. She was about 13 with sandy blonde hair and bright blue eyes, full of excitement. It all went too fast, the butcher seemed set after her too, and pretty soon we where at $210, and then at $300, that an old ugly man had bid. The little girl in front of me was crying. "Going Once, Going Tw...." I yelled $310 which was more than I ever wanted. "Going Once, Going Twice, and Going to the young lady over their in the corner."
But this horse was not for me, I already had the most beautiful dream horses at my Ranch, No, this horse was for the girl.
I grabbed a paper out of my pocket and wrote, "She's For You" tapped on the girls shoulder and gave it to her. She read it and a smile took over her face, "Thank You." she said quietly to me. And ran off to find her dad.
I looked at the remaining $25 in my hand. What could this buy? A dead horse? And even if I could afford one the butcher would surely bid higher than that!
The auction went on and on, and none of the horses sold, most of the people had left, and the butcher was getting most of the horses. The father of the girl had come around to thank me and we had figured out how he would get it and I gave him the money.
The well, five minutes till this closes and only two horses left. Surprisingly the butcher left, his trailer was probably full. About 15 people were left, and soon ten when the second to last horse came out, a chestnut mare, who looked to weak to walk, all of the sudden she collapsed, and started breathing heavily. I am telling you, probably one of the worst experiences I have had was when that horse died in that auctioning pen, I closed my eyes as the shot rung thrue the air to put her out of her misery.
When I opened my eyes again they where swollen with tears, and everyone had gone, they had somehow dragged the mare out and who knows what they did with her body, the high piched whinny from the pen behind all of the advertisement banners was still at the peak, going louder than ever. The auctioneer was getting down from the stand now and I was the only one left. Someone yelled from behind the banners at the auctioneer leaving the large room, "What should we do with him?"
The auctioneers eyes seemed red to as he yelled back "Kill Him!" and ran out.
They brought him out into view and near the door so he would be easier to drag out, and looked around to see if anyone was left in the building and missed me because I was leaning behind and againsed the pole in the corner watching them. The horse was hopping around shying at everything, just wanting to run from this world while still whinnying for that mare, who was obviously his friend/mate. They lifted the gun to his head and I relized what they where doing. "STOP!" I screamed, "I'll take him!".
They looked up to find that red faced lady running down to them. "I'll take him!" I repeated in a more quiet tone.
The rest happened so quickly, they just handed him over and walked away, and pretty soon I was driving back into my much loved ranch. Most of the people where surprised to see me coming back with such a dead horse. I settled him down into his stall, which he refused to go into at fist because he thought it was scary, but eventually he gave up and went in it. Hiding in the corner making squeaking noises like a mouse. I decided to leave him, it was getting late and we both needed sleep, but I also knew that neither of us would get it.
As I lay down in my bed, a tear streaking down my cheek. I gently sang a song to myself(see below) and eventually went into a light sleep, ready to wake at even the slightest creak.
Months passed and I created a special bond with that horse, who was somehow named Vance.
Vance become so attached to me. It was hard to take care of my other horses when he was around at first, but after a while he got used to the fact that I had to leave.
We will never know what happened to that horse and his dead mate before I got him, but he sure Is a wonderful horse.
I can also say that I went to a show to watch one of my young borders and I saw that pretty dappled grey mare and that blonde girl who won first place. I guess she had names her TrueWishOnTheStar, and I almost cried when I saw them out their together.
I came home and literaly hugged Vance for a half an hour.
I started riding him at about the fifth month I had him. He was a little unsure about what was going on at first but trusted that I would not make him do anything deadly. Pretty soon we where cantering around doing minor jumps.
He still could not do much more than ground work because of the injuries he had had when he was younger, but he was amazing at it.
I started thinking on what I could do with him....
and then it came to me!
Who needs a calm, well behaved, gentle horse. You guessed it!
He went into horse therapy training to get taught how to become a therapy horse.
It did not take him long to get his certificate or training and just last week he got his first student riding him who has seriouse muscle problems, but she loves him and right after she rode him I started asking her a few questions, when we where talking about her school she said, "I love chemistry, it is my favorite thing. I am a very advanced chemist. And you are a very nice horse!" Said the girl. "Does Vance have a show name?" She asked. I told her no and that he does not do shows but that she could help me find one. "I already have one!" She said in a voice that made Vance's head pop up. "Advanced Chemistry!" She said with a smile on her face. I had to admit that it was a better name then I would have ever thought up. "Ok" I said, "Then Advanced Chemistry it is!"
Vance perked up at the words, "He likes it." the girl said.
"Yes," I replied, "he likes it."Sorry for such a sad story.... well, they lived happily ever after!s o n g"A New Day Has Come" Celine Dion wrote:

Username~Country~Show NameNight TrainBarn NameTrainGenderStallionAge7 YearsBreedCrossbred Stock HorseHistoryTrain started out in this world in the lower right hand corner of Pennsylvania. As a young colt he rarely left his mother side, unless he was had children around him. At the age of 3 he left his mother, home, and children for California for training in dressage. The flight was long and stressful as he traveled. Heart pounding as the plane touched down the whole holding stall shook. Scared out of his mind Train was eger to get off the plane. One hoof touched the runway quick followed by three more. He was greeted by the flashing lights of cameras, large black boxes on human's shoulders, and a lot of talking and yelling. Although all this worried him he paid no mind to it and walked slowly with his head held high. The few people touch him he didn't mind at all, he actually like the attention. Train couldn't figure out what all the fuss about him was? He was just a farm horse that is visiting Cali. Snorting, ears pinned back as the humans pulled and pushed him into a trailer. He never liked thoses metal boxes on wheels. Finally after 45 minuets of battling he was in. Taking deep breaths he calmed down. After a few hour the trailer stopped and the doors opened. In a hurry to get out he quickly backed up and out. A human in funny clothes grabbed his lead and stopped him. She was wearing what looked to be a dress but it was split the whole way down the front and her hat was a very strange looking cowgirl hat.. It couldn't block the sunlight at all being that it only covered her head. Ignoring the strange cloths on the girl he greeted her with a whinny. Prancing along happily as he entered a large barn filled with horses he was led down to an empty stall. It was small but he fit. Ears perked as he looked around curiously, this was the start of something not so grand...
.:Two Years Later:.
Train waited patiently in a large ring filled with sand. It quiet and the lights were dimmed. A large stand full of hushed people waited. I a split second the 5 year old stallion took a quick step forward as he trotted around the ring, Starting the Dressage Tournament. Moving quickly and swiftly, stepping dramatically in the sand as he snorted his eyes focused on what was ahead of himself. Listening to his riders commands and responding perfectly. At the end as his rider bowed she gave the signal and Train slowly dipped his head down and bowed along with her. Rising back up to his hooves he staired at the judges. All had very good poker faces... Your guess was as good as his as to what they were thinking. It was the end of the show and he watched as all the other horses were put into trailers. He waited patiently for his rider. Hours ticked by, it went on far into the night. He started to get worried and looked around, he would wait, he could wait forever for the girl that he loved her dearly to show. The end of day and the start of night as he finally let his eyes shut to get some rest. Morning light flooded the stables as he slowly opened his eyes. All other stalls were empty, but he still waited. He knew she would come for him, she had to. Watching as stable hands walked by giving him food and water and cleaning his stall, they never moved him to a large stall which he was fine with keeping his small one. He watched out his stall as time passed. New horses come and go, stable hands pass by. He would spend time out in the pasture and talk to the other horses. He never gave up hope that he would see his girl again.
.:Two Years Later:.
Train stood in a stall. This one was very different from his old one. It was smaller and had no place for food or water, nothing covered the floor and was completely sealed except for a few wholes in the front and top. He had been tought to never panic, so he didn't. It was the one thing he feared most, another plans ride, but this one was longer, much longer 4 weeks long. The whole trip he kept his nose to the holes breath slowly. He was hungry, thirsty, and tired but he didn't give up. The last day of his journey he looked out one of the wholes at the world on the other side. He could see a large ranch, huge barns, wide open fields dotted with horses. He was over whelmed with joy at the fact he might finally get out of the crates. He watched as the truck drove right by... Heart sinking as he looked away from the paradise. Few more hours went by before the truck stopped. Not bothering to look at where he was. Quickly picking up his head as the crate door cracked and broke, peeling away. He snorted at the human standing there. The person grabbed his lead and pulled him out, his harness no longer fit his thin face, one tug and it would slip right off but he didn't put up a fight and followed closely. Skinny and tired the 7 year old horse once again stood in a stall. People walked by looking at him petting his side. Only when a small child stopped by to see him did he turn his head towards her to let the little girl pet his nose. Once all the people had came and gone over the week he once again was led out of the stall. This time the human was different, not the same man, but a man. Slowly walking as he was loaded into an actual trailer he didn't put up a fight just ready to take a nap. Screaching of the door echoed through the trailer as the doors shut. He could hear a mans voice say "One last time bud!" as he hit the side of the trailer to send it on its way. The ride was long and bumpy, spilling all of his water or what little water there was an no food anywhere to be seen. Eyes shutting slowly as all the sudden the trailer jerked to a stop. Snorting at the sudden stop he looked out of the trailer through the air vents. He could see a large field filled with horses, it wasn't as large as the paradise farm he had seen last week but it was still amazing. Doors opening once again the horse was led out. One hoof touched the dirt followed by three more.. His eyes stayed on the ground as he was led into the stables and put into a large stall. Glancing around the stallion quickly went over to the water to get a nice long drink. Food wasn't anywhere in his stall but he didn't mind. The next morning he was given a small amount of food which he ate quickly, and some more and some more till it the bucket of food was empty. The next day out in the pasture he heard a whistle. Just like the other horses he came running and was greeted by a girl. In some weird twist of faith he hoped it would be his girl, but it wasn't. She was different, very different but still just as gentle. Train still stands at the corner of field every day watching the cars that go by hoping that one will stop and his girl will get out. One time he thought he had seen her driving by, but the car didn't stop...
.:Final Few:.
Train has befriended a Grulla mare name Maggy who is only 5 and an old Bay Quarter Horse/Tennessee Walker cross named Sham who is 27 soon to be 28, the three are still living happily at the ranch, but Train will forever wait for his girl.
.:End:.PersonalityTrain has been abused and abbandoned, starved and deprived of sleep, but still has a kind heart. He is a sucker for children and women but no as accepting to men. He is very patient and understanding. His heart is made of pure gold you could say, since he doesn't have the heart to hurt anyone or thing. He is very loving to all he knows and even to people and horses he doesn't know. He likes to play games and have fun despite what other may think. His favorite things are sugar which could be why he is so sweet. He has has a long and stressful life so far and is finally somewhere where he can take it easy, eat, and relax, all more of his favorite things which explain why he is so mellow.SongTitle- Night Train

Song- Night Train Lyric Video
I've been thinkin' bout you all day baby
waitin' on that sun to go down
whatcha say I pick you up after work
slide over, well slip out to the outskirts of town
got a blanket and a fifth of comfort
a little something to knock off the edge
it's supposed to get a little cool tonight
looks like I'm gonna have to hold you tight... yeah
[Chorus:]
Bout a mile off old mill road
in that spot nobody knows
park the truck and we take off running
hurry up, girl I hear it coming
got a moon and a billion stars
sound of steel and old box cars
the thought of you is driving me insane
come on baby lets go listen to the night train
yeah I hope its gonna be a long one
if were lucky its moving slow
wouldn't mind if it lasted all night
lying next to you on that hillside lets go
Bout a mile off old mill road
in that spot nobody knows
park the truck and we take off running
hurry up girl, I hear it coming
got a moon and a billion stars
sound of steel and old box cars
the thought of you is driving me insane
come on baby lets go listen to the night train
Let's go listen to the night train [x2]
[Chorus]
Let's go listen to the night train
Blame is a coward but self-righteous
A funny little creature hiding out in me
Hate is power with a price tag
A funny little creature screaming out in me
Listen to me
Fear is a liar but he's been right before
If you fight your shadow, you'll get lost in a war
Ambitions a champ, but he's also greedy
Drunk or sober he always wants more
I always want more
I always want more
Lust is beauty in a body bag
A funny little thing that's screaming "Just use me!"
