Just watching from behind the fence at the bay mare prancing about with her head held high as if she was a war steed made me want to ride her, though it was for the best, and I truly knew that it wasn't just going to be easy. I've watched other horses be broken and trained from this stage, but I've never come across the thought that I would be in this situation right now. The bay mare was absolutely stunning; her mane and tail seemed to glisten and shine in the morning sunlight, and her ears were always perked and alert. Everyone has a starting point, right? Well mine's and my new mare's was n o w.

I knew because it was the first day I wouldn't be able to do much, but I had stayed up almost all night planning out what I would do to start off our training. I just simply thought that letting her know that I wasn't a threat and that I was just helping her was a good start. My heart started pounding faster as I climbed over the fence slowly, being cautious not to shake my metal bucket filled with oats wouldn't make a loud clank as it hit the ground of fence. Also, I had been thinking of what to call her often. Commonly people would call a bay horse something related to coffee, chocolate or some sort of biscuit like most of my friends do, but I was confident about this one name I've had floating around my head for a while. Esperanza. A equally pretty name for a equally pretty horse, right? It means 'hope' in Spanish. I thought it really suited how sweet and gentle she looked, and she had certainly grown on me in the past few minutes I had just stared at her in total awe at her beauty. So Esperanza was the name I had decided for certain that I was happy with. Though her show-name, I wasn't quite sure about that yet.

Esperanza soon stood still and glanced at me a couple of times as I picked up a handful of oats and held them out as far as I could in a calm manner, hoping that she'd reach out to eat them and realise; 'oh. okay, this person is nice!'. Flicking her long tail at the pesky flies surrounding her in the warm and humid air, she cautiously stepped forward, unsure on what to do. Clicking gently with my tongue, I beckoned her forward gently, a warm smile appearing on my face as she bent her neck out to take a sniff. Her long, long whiskers gently brushed against my hand, though I tried my best not to jerk back or move. "Come on girl, I won't hurt you~" I said in a low whisper as she slowly began chomping down on the oats, her ears flicking forward. Her light brown eyes were concentrated on me, and I do admit I felt very calm and fulfilled when staring into her searching eyes. Soon after she had made sure that there was no oats left in my hand, she slowly crept closer to me and flicked her tail back and forth in curiosity. "That's enough for today, I think. I'll return tomorrow, Esperanza!" I smiled to myself before climbing back over the fence post and returning to the barn to return the spare oats. Tomorrow, I was going to try to touch her, but in reality I don't know how she'll react to that!

Before I knew it, it was the next day of training. I woke up with aching legs and arms, due to yesterday, though that didn't bother me and my determination to train Esperanza. As I walked out to the pasture, my mare's ears perked forward before she began to slowly approach me bravely before darting away in a canter a few times, as if playing a game. It was quite funny at first, but soon enough I began to realise I wasn't here for playing games, but instead trying to earn the Mustang's trust. Soon after I clearly made the fact that I wasn't here for that matter, she calmed down, though she was still cheeky at times; but I guess that's normal for mares like her! The time really flew by when I was out with Esperanza in the field, just staring at her and admiring her every movement. The bay mare used such delicate movements with every stride as I had noticed, it was absolutely stunning to watch her prance through the trimmed grass from time to time, weaving through the trees with great care as if she was a yearling again. Though soon enough, the sun began to set beyond the large hills which surrounded my home, gently telling me that I should start heading back, possibly sooner than I thought. Once I got home, the first thing I did was lay down on my bed, staring up at the ceiling with a smile as I recalled petting her for the first time, and countless other times when she wasn't playing or grazing. I had gained most of her trust for today, I hope. She's now perfectly fine with me petting her, so tomorrow I think I'll attempt to groom her, and possibly if I have time see how she reacts to the halter.
