Niyol wrote:Long ago, my great grandfather started this ranch up. Back then, he only had one stallion and five mares for his herd. It was really tough for him, as many white people (though prejudices were not as prevalent as they used to be) didn't want to take him seriously. But my great grandfather didn't give up. He kept fighting and gradually built up the herd. He added in all sorts of breeds. Mustangs. Quarter Horses. Appaloosas. Morgans. You name an American Breed from back then and he had it! What you see out in the paddocks now is his own legacy.
Now I have set the scene, I shall tell you Tsintah's story. I was out on my own at the age of seventeen to mind the herd. I'd been out with my father for many moons before and he felt like it was my time to learn to be independent. After all, one day he will not be here to keep the herd in check, so that job will fall upon my shoulders. So, there I was, minding the herd. There were a few pregnant mares in our herd, including Kai ('Willow Tree'), who was carrying Tsintah inside her, one of our best American Quarter horse broodmares. The sun was high in the sky that day and many of the horses were growing hot and irritable. The stallions, though no mares were in heat, were fighting and dust was flying. It wasn't safe for a mare to give birth here and Kai must have known this.
I caught sight of her walking off into a neighbouring forest. Curious and eager to please my father, I followed her into the woods. When I got to her, she was already down on one side, a small pair of hooves poking out of her womb. Tsintah must have really wanted to meet the world! I remembered my father's words and didn't interfere, letting the mother give birth naturally. It was magical to watch as Tsintah entered our world. The way she was able to stand only moments after her birth. I knew that she would be strong for us. I named her after her birthplace, 'among the forest'.
