Name: Altan (Mongolian for 'gold')
Gender: Male
Age: Young Adult (about fifteen years?)
Personality:
Altan is outgoing and bright, a true social butterfly who loves to be in large groups of his kind and occasionally interacts with other creatures as well. Although he is easily frightened, he is very playful and always full of energy. He is truly optimistic, always seeing the glass as half full, and looking for the good things in life. However, he does have some downsides as well: he can be quite stubborn, thinking he knows best, especially when it comes to those he cares about and worries for. He also can hold a grudge for a very long time if you hurt him (not physically, but mentally, or in his heart). He is a dreamer, and always goes for his goals (or as he likes to call them, the 'gold standards') even if it means hurting a few people along the way, although he normally doesn't even mean to. While he finds the idea of a family appealing, it's likely he'll never have a mate or children simply because of how easily he gives up things to get his goals, which are constantly changing. He has terrible nightmares that he's had ever since he was a child, which only make him more determined to live a good life and prove the nightmares wrong. He collects seashells, often stringing them into necklaces or bracelets to give to his friends (the ones that will stick by him, that is, even understanding sometimes he will put his goals ahead of them). Some of them he keeps as a reminder of how beautiful his ocean home is, and that he should treat it well. His home is a small coral reef at the bottom of the sea, where everything is bright, vibrant, and full of life.
Story:
A flash of gold like lightning flits by through the water, astounding the small silver fish that slowly drift by in large packs, sticking together. They split apart just in time to allow the much larger creature to bolt past, its long, gold and violet tail wavering like a good-bye. The little fish watch in awe as the creature skids to a halt, glancing over his shoulder at the fish and waving his tail again. "Sorry about that!" He yells, grinning from ear to ear, panting a little from his swim. He's rather pleased that he could actually go that fast, even if he did frighten the little fish. They stare at him blankly with their beady black eyes, and he sighs and keeps going, swiftly manuvering his way around the bits of coral that scrape against his hide.
The shining little orbs tied around the end of his tail beckon the food-searching fish nearer. The little silver things began to swim after him, following him in the hopes that he would lead them to the food, instincts kicking in. Again Atlan stopped and glanced at them, and they merely stared emotionlessly back at him. It was like a contest, except the fish didn't need to blink. Sighing once more, Atlan continued on at a much slower pace, letting his tail drift lazily back and forth over the tops of the coral. Down below, plenty of other fish darted about, startled by the shimmering of his thick gold necklace. He stopped when he realized that the pack behind him had grown by quite a bit, the silver fish joined by fish of every hue: red, blue, violet, green, yellow, you name it, there was a fish. They came from not much larger than one of his eyes, to as large as tail fin, all floating in the water and watching him intently. "Hello?" He asked curiously, giving a little purple fish a gentle prod. The fish blew a bubble at him, and Atlan laughed.
"I like you. You're spunky!" He announced, but the little purple fish didn't do anything else, just sat there and blew out little bubbles into the water. Atlan watched it for another minute, then sighed when he realized he wasn't going to be getting any intelligent chatter or friendship out of the fish. He turned around and started swimming again, starting to just wish that the fish would go away. But they followed him like so many puppies after a human master.
Finally he went crazy and turned himself into a little whirlwind as he dashed through them again and again, splitting them up so they fled in terror, leaving little paths of bubbles behind. Satisfied, he grinned to himself and went to go in search of a meal, his bright eyes missing the one small violet fish that continued to swim along behind him, staying close enough to his tailfin that it wasn't even noticable...
