. . .It started with a thump. . .
Rae jolted awake, confused, and for the first time in her life afraid. She honestly couldn't recollect when she had fallen asleep or, where she was. Where was she? Her eyes struggled to adjust to the thin soft light that provided little as far as sight was concerned. She attempted to stand, only to feel a killing pain...an injury. But how? With a moan she let herself flop back down her whole body shaking. Shock had finally kicked in, and adrenaline was dying off. The next question crossed her mind, how did she get hurt?
Her thoughts jumbled together, and the more she tried to think the worse It got. With a heavy sigh of defeat she dropped any attempt to remember and was now trying to formulate a way to get herself to her feet without too much strain. Rae slowly, cautiously sat up, her belly still resting percariously on the ground. She groaned as she pushed her front legs up so now only her rump remained resting in the damp grass.
Exhausted she remained there, getting a better look of her surroundings before picking up where she left off. The forest was easily recognizable by the scent. All the trees were pine, the ground scattered with millions of needles that had fallen from the branches. A slow warm breeze wrapped around her, making it only hotter. With this news she also picked up on the season. Summer.
Rae took it all in, before investigating her own condition.
A huge gash was on her lower flank, and went down her left leg. Blood seeped from the wounds, but it was only noticeable on her coat because it gleamed. Horrified she turned away, her heart beating dangerously fast, the pain was now eating away at her limited strength.
She shook her head, as if the action would make a difference. With a terrible screech she was on all fours, but her left hind leg was shaking violently and was hardly able to hold up it's weight. The birds in the nearby trees scattered at the sound leaving the forest deathly still once again.
"come on. Come on. You can do this." she breathed, trying to cheer on herself as she took her first steps. One foot at a time, but the process was painfully slow and agonizing. Her golden yellow eyes suddenly stuck on a figure, sprawled out behind a thicker oak, covered in blood and unmistakably dead. But it wasn't the first.
Rae hurriedly rushed by, only to find another two on her left, another one on her right, soon it seemed she was surrounded by death. The world began to spin just like it had when she awoke, but this was different. This was from fear. The bodies flashed before her eyes, even when she closed them and now there truly was no escaping the sight. She cautiously opened one eye, and then the other, her heart taking on an extra weight as she continued onward. There was nothing there that could explain to her who she was or what had happened.
-------
A while later she neared the edge of the treeline which seemed to stretch forever. But right before she passed into the rays of the glorious sun, was stopped by a faint rustling directly behind her. Rae caught her breath, flicking her ears back, and catching more rustling not too far off. She turned her head, eyes immediately scanning the trees, but it didn't take her long to notice the wolf plowing strait for her.
With a taxing effort she dodged out of the way, the wolf skidding into the sunlight....
. . . Flash. . . BlindEd from the ever increasing brightness. . . Then the face appeared.
A connection! She had something! She at least had some interaction with this wolf before, though by the snapping jaws and nashing teeth, he wasn't a friend. His coat was a rich dark black but glimmered with blood, just like hers. He was somehow a part of this, and Rae was going to find out. The wolf moved in again, barely missing her as she fell off of her feet and into the grass...right where she started. His dark looming figure now towering over her, one powerful paw pinning her beneath him without effort.
Before she had time to yelp he was yelling at her in a ballistic rage. "YOU DID THIS! YOU KILLED THEM ALL! YOU KILLED EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM FOR WHAT? Revenge, a sick joke, a laugh?" his tone held nothing but hatred and an unmistakable pain.
Stammering she replied," bu-but I didn't! I-I can't remember. I..." But before she could finish was interjected. "YOU ARE SICK! refusing to even remember your crimes! You murdered my family in cold blood, how dare you!" he snapped, a sudden desperation went flickering across his glossy eyes, then he moved in for her neck...
It seemed like this was end for her, Rae closing her eyes and picturing his giant teeth boring into her flesh. White flooded the blackness now, it seemed like this was the point when her memories of her life would be flashing by, but they did no such thing. The only thing she had was white and black. . .
------
Rae woke up, the same trees towering over her. Her eyes moved from the canopies to herself, wondering if in fact she was only dreaming. She remembered quickly the black wolf who had attacked her.....and wondered why she wasn't dead. He had her, right under his grasp. All he had to do was bite, so why didn't he?
It was all too much to understand, at least now when her memory was only limited to what she had awoken to. She rose quicker now, holding in a sob as the pain shot up her leg and lower back. She was determined to discover what this mess that surrounded her was created....though a feeling struck her heart. Perhaps it was her doing. The wolf did exclaim it. What's to say it wasn't true...
