    prompt ten
kalon used: althea, peregrine, & james

The party was clearly exhausted, and two out of the three were irritated. It clearly had been the seemingly never-ending heat that had made them this way, but Peregrine still tried to make this adventure light and happy.

"You know, we can still have some fun on this trip, right?" Peregrine adressed James, who he had caught up with and began walking alongside with. James let out a tired sigh, giving Peregrine attention. But, not quite the attention he was looking for.

"Nothing is fun about this place," he hissed at him, before glaring away. Peregrine decidedly made the right decision and backed off, but he was still determined to make this trip a little less miserable. What could help them take their mind off the heat? A game of some kind? He tried to think of one, but thought of nothing. He saw a hill nearby, however, seemingly formed from cooled volcanic rock, and smirked. He would climb that and be above the rest of them, and with that thought in mind, he began to climb the hill.

"Peregrine, please-" Althea started, seeing that he was beginning to climb, but it was too late. He looked like he was not going to stop, unfortunately for the rest of the group. However, that's just what he did. Peregrine abruptly came to a stop halfway up the hill, and then began yelling, running, and carrying something down a hill. He looked like he was in danger, so Althea and James ran to the bottom of the hill to meet him.

"What happened?" James stammered, clearly afraid of any more monsters, or fire chickens. But Peregrine only started to laugh,
and as the group saw, had a chest in his hands. It was dazzling, and had some gems decorating the outside. However, it did have a hefty lock on the outside. Peregrine looked all too pleased with himself, and began to lead the way for the group; despite Althea usually doing this. He smirked at the two others as he began to walk.

"I'll have you know, that differing from the trail really can lead to a fun tri-" he stopped, tripping over a rock from not looking at where he was going. The chest skidded out of his hands, and he tried to catch it, but it had been too late. The chest had regretfully skidded into the lava, and began to sink.

"You were saying?" James laughed at him, waving the chest off before Althea silently led the way once more. Defeated, Peregrine followed the group again. The curiosity was now eating away at him, and he felt a desperate need to know something.

What had been in that chest?

Kalon Summer Event // Prompt 10

Postby hazilnut » Thu Jul 06, 2017 11:29 am

____________________________________

Prompt - 10

Kalon Party
Dustin | Sell-sword | 17 years old
→ A hyper but forgetful boy with a good
heart and a wish to see the world

Perseus | Scholar mage | 25 years old
→ Dustin's relatively reserved mentor,
and reluctant but wise accompaniment

Jade | Shadow puppeteer | 24 years old
→ A graceful but painfully shy woman
with a cynical outlook on life

809 words
____________________________________

Having done her good deed for the day, Jade expected her reward. Well maybe not a reward per say but if the great karma forces of the world could descend and relive her of her headache at least that would be very nice of them! But now instead of some minor relief she and Dustin were left with none at all. Perseus had managed to get himself roped into something or other while buying supplies, an occurrence which was beginning to edge on becoming a trend, and with his departure their nice snow cloud had vanished. The puppeteer could do some basic magic on her own but most of her spells had to do with basic light manipulation. Great for entertaining kids but not so great for surviving hot weather. There was a reason she had steered clear of doing shows in this part of the continent.

As Jade sweat in the minimal shade that her caravan provided, flipping through the books Perseus had checked out in hopes of finding a spell more on her level, Dustin came loping up to her, flush, drenched with sweat, and beaming from ear to ear. "Look what I found!" he crowed. A large wooden chest plopped in front of Jade. The wrought metal around it's lock looked a bit scuffed, like someone had tried to chop it through with a blade; come to think of it, Dustin's sword looked a bit worse for wear. "I tried to open it but it didn't work. There's wasn't no key neither." The woman's sigh got lost in the dark cloth that enveloped her face.

"Dustin go on inside and grab yourself some water and something to eat."

"I can go in? Really?" Dustin's face lit up with the pleasure of a starving beggar finally given bread. Surprisingly, Jade didn't find herself worrying over the state of affairs her things would be left in after hurricane Dustin hit, though undeniably they would be bad. The kid was good, and it wouldn't hurt to let him poke around in her home. He was already a part of her heart.

"Sure. Just don't touch anything," that was a foolish hope, "and leave your sword here. I'm going to get this open."

"Of course!"

With Dustin's rustling around as background noise, Jade turned her attention to the chest before her. It was old; singed black in places and the copper accents it once had were now greened, but it well built and solid despite the years. The chest was not something that could be forced open, Dustin's attempts has proven that much, but rather it had to be coaxed. Jade fingered the blade, figuring.

"Hey Jade? What's this screen for?"

"My performances."

"Why do you use a screen? Why not just regular puppets or something?"

"Hmmm. I like shadow puppets better. They're what I know; they're safer. Besides there's a unique beauty to things that aren't quite seen don't you think?"

"Oh! Yes I do think so."

Dustin fell back into quiet rustling once more while Jade worked on the chest. She tried chipping away at the burnt bits but the wounds were mostly superficial and below the chipping char just lay more solid wood. Perhaps she could just try setting it on fire...

"Hey Jade?"

"Yes Dustin?"

"Is that why you hide your face? For beauty?"

"..."

"Jade?"

"N-no not quite like that."

"Oh. Okay."

Jade grit her teeth and tried to focus on breaking into the chest, but suddenly she had become a lot more aware of the veil she wore. In a way she supposed, it was for beauty. So that when others looked at her they wouldn't see a demon with sunken pupiless lanterns staring back at them. So that they wouldn't run shrieking or worse yet, stay and throw things. Yes, it was for beauty, but not for vanity. It was for safety, but who would understand that? Dustin's sword was still in Jade's hand but it was still and the chest lay unopened. Maybe she was crying under her veil; she couldn't tell. Who could under so many locks and layers?

"Hey Jade?"

Y-yes Dustin?"

"I bet you are beautiful. I don't need to see to know."

"T-thank you."

Now the woman knew she was crying, but oddly it didn't hurt. Her breathing was ragged and wet and with one long breath that she had taken to calm herself the cloth of her veil wound up in her mouth. With a half-choke and a half-laugh Jade flipped the veil off of her face and breathed in deeply. Leaning forwards she took the lock in her hand, and felt it pop open with a metallic sigh. Inside was a small golden heart-locket and a note that read My dearest Elise, never forget how much you are worth.

Jade slipped it over her head and smiled.

    promot // using molly!!

molly was freaking out. a treasure chest? what if there was gold inside! she could be able to buy anything she wanted. she just needed to open it.

she tried banging a rock against it, barely doing any damage. while she wanted it open, she didn't want to break whatever was inside. she took out her hair from the large ponytail, attempting to open it with her Bobby pin. she heard something click, and got excited.

she opened the chest as fast as she could, and to her surprise, it was a few pearl necklaces, a few rings, and some other treasures. maybe not the gold she expected, but she still felt like a billion bucks. she tossed the rings on her fingers, but realized that would be a bad idea, and would attract other kalons searching for the treasure.

she shoved everything she could into her bag, even if it made it super heavy, it was super worth it.

    sugarsticks - delta

“ow!” delta yowled as she hit her paw on something hard. as she turned around to investigate what it was, to her lovely surprise, it was a treasure chest. she forgot the pain in her foot, and began smiling wider than she had in a long time.

she was more than excited, and needed to open it. she tried yanking on the top, but that was unsuccessful. she decided she'd look for the key.

she began walking away, while still keeping her eye on the chest. luckily it was hidden in the tall grass, and she didn't see anybody.

after a while, she was able to find a key in a tree, and opened the chest. she was freaking out, as she slipped on the jewelry that was inside. she felt like a queen, and she bathed in her lucky finding. this was just what she needed- a dose of satisfied greed.

[RPG] Kalon Summer Event // Prompt 10

Postby starshine, » Thu Jul 06, 2017 11:40 am

Lᴏᴏᴛ ʙᴏx!
Along the path though the lava kindgom, you manage to stumble upon a treasure chest, but it appears to be locked. It would be such a waste to leave treasure behind...
How does your hero manage to open the chest, and what's inside?

---
[featuring]
calliope - the healer || health: 90/100
[item bag] x5 heat resistance potions | x2 poison potion
x4 healing potions | x1 silver sword | x1 leather gloves [equipped]

west - the magician || health: 120/140
[item bag] x1 emerald staff | x2 speed potions | x1 burnt map
x1 silver boots [equipped]

charlie- the swordsman || health: 115/140
[item bag] x1 embellished silver sword | x1 silver helmet [equipped]
x1 world map | x1 swordsman book

West glanced around. Spotting a small golden and brown item in the middle of the rock and lava. He perked his ears curiously. Curious as to what it is. "Guys! Come look at this!" He called, getting the attention of the other two kalons in the party. Calliope and Charlie looked in the direction, spotting the little item. "Let's go get it." West spoke quietly, hoping if he was quiet enough, nothing would jump out at them.

---

As they got closer, it made out to be, a loot box! Calliope smiled, picking up the pace a little. She slowed as they neared, maybe it was too good to be true? She hesitated, but shrugged as West moved forward to unlock it. West clenched his teeth. It was a long code, but maybe his magic could help? He pulled out the staff, focusing it's power on the lock, but no use. "I guess I'll have to do it manually.." He murmured. Charlie sighed and Calliope groaned.

---

Charlie perked his ears as he heard noises in the cave. He squinted, shadows moved across the walls. He pulled out his sword and nudged Calliope to do the same. Calliope brandished her sword. Charlie leaped forward, not seeing the enemy but slashing it down and ending it. Calliope watched Charlie, and walked around slowly, challenging the creatures. One burst out, carrying a little dagger and a coin. Calliope studied it for a moment, it was a gremlin, like the one hadain had asked her to eliminate in the town. She slashed at it, missing it's nose by a hair. The gremlin laughed evilly and sticking the dagger out, grazing her knee. She winced a little and hit again, hitting and killing it. A few more gremlins popped out, Charlie and Calliope hitting them one-by-one while West, still, is getting the lock.

---

West glanced around, the gremlins surrounding them fast. They had all come for the loot box! He slammed his staff down in anger, and the gremlins fell over, some dead, some horribly injured. West looked up, shocked to find he had ended so many gremlins lives in such a short amount of time while the others took a few minutes to kill two. He chuckled slightly, amused at the thought of how easy it was to eliminate enemies compared to the others. "You could have done that earlier!" Charlie yelled, "That would have helped a lot." He sneered. "Sorry! A little busy here." He said, going back to the lock and opening it slightly. He smiled, "Got it!"

---

The other two finished up the gremlins and walked over to the chest, opening it fully and staring in awe at the gold and items. The items in there were, x1 poison potion, x4 maps, x2 golden helmets, x5 cooked meat, x1 silver breastplate. Charlie picked up the helmet and tossed it around. "Let's decide later on what to do with them. I don't want to bother any more gremlins today." Calliope suggested. West and Charlie nodded, splitting up the items evenly between the three. Charlie smiled, standing back up with a slightly heavier backpack on his back, "Let's go see what else we can find today." He looked at the other two and walked forward, leading them out of the cave and back to the vast lavalands.

Prompt 10
Featuring Luca, Meredith, and Aaheru

Meredith was convinced the lavalands were a manifested circle of hell. Sweat dripped into her eyes and smoke burned her lungs. The little hellfire lava rivers were merely the icing on the cake- creating noxious clouds of gasses that could KO her in two breaths. And the flaming chickens were really weird, not to mention the weapons shop owner.

At least Aaheru seemed more cheerful after finding his 'cursed' teapot. As far as Meredith could tell there was nothing wrong with the thing. No odd mishaps or misadventures thus far.

Luca seemed to have adapted to the land. His steps were steadier, breaths more sure. He had taken a piece of cloth and wrapped it around his face-- that seemed to have helped with the lands natural airborne toxins. And two chickens seemed to follow him around like ducklings. He didn't seem to mind.

"I need a break," Meredith called, collapsing on the ground in a boneless heap. Luca eyed her from the corner of his gaze but shrugged and continued forward to investigate a crevice. Aaheru smirked at the tired kalon, before offering his canteen. She drank from it gratefully, catching her breath.

There was a dragging sound and when Meredith looked up Luca was standing there with an ebony, ash-dusted chest... With an obsidian lock.

"What's this?" Aaheru questioned, crouching before the lock. Meredith closed her eyes and took a nap sometime after that.

***

CRASH.

Meredith jerked awake. Her heart pounded erratically. Her face scrunched as she realized a flaming chicken stood on her head.

Her eyes traversed the area... To find a nuclear disaster. The ebony chest sat pristine, save for the scorch marks, broken lock picks, green dripping goo, and black viscous fluid pooled near it. Aaheru sat next to it, glowering, for nothing would open the chest.

Meredith cracked her neck and stood in a long stretch.

"Stand back," she ordered, picking up her war hammer and giving it a few experimental swings. The metal was comfortable in her fingers.

Aaheru sweatdropped and scrambled out of the way.

Meredith charged like a bull, a manic smile on her face.

CRASH.

The chest never stood a chance.
