Pip bounced down the dock, pausing halfway to watch the glittering fish flit back and forth in the water. They were beautiful, but -- according to a local Pip had met yesterday -- were mere minnows compared to the fish that came out during the night. The kalon's stomach growled aggressively; when was the last time he had eaten? Real food -- not those granola bars he had stashed in his suitcase and been surviving off of since the crash. It was a miracle he had packed enough to last almost three weeks...
"Isn't there a restaurant of some sort around here?" Pip asked himself aloud, eyes still fixated on the fish. Reluctantly, he tore his gaze from the ocean, and began the walk to where he
thought the food was. He had been helping in the kitchen rather regularly since the boat crashed; he was fairly certain he could find his way, this time without a guide.
Eventually, after a few hours of getting lost -- which should have been impossible given the village's size -- and listening to his stomach scream, Pip gave up and asked some of the locals for directions to "absolutely anywhere with absolutely any type of food; seriously, I'll eat a whale." He had gotten a few funny looks, but was eventually directed to a small café in the village.
They only served coffee.
It was definitely Pip's favorite island food (if it could even be called that), and not just because it was the only island food he had tasted on the whole trip. Pip enjoyed it so much, he drank five whole cups before realizing he had no way to pay for the drinks. The kalon ended up spending the rest of the day cleaning the café to pay off his coffee.
On the bright side, at least now he could stay up late to watch the fish.
