Prompt #9
Finally,
Cesar thought, a chance to take the actual vacation he’d signed up for in the first place. Not that he was ever much of a fan of buying things - unless they were the really expensive, higher end stuff - but he figured he might as well look around anyway, he might even find something interesting. He wandered down the streets, glancing in the windows of the various shops as he went. He never needed much more than a glance; the typical assortment of t-shirts, baseball caps, and little trinkets neither amused nor interested him. He certainly wasn’t gonna buy any of that kind of stuff for his boys back at home, either, that was sure to give them all the wrong ideas. As for the furniture, even that would throw off the whole “rich mafia boss” vibe his office had.
Cesar mulled over the idea of turning back around and heading to the beach. He was sure he wasn’t going to find anything enticing (or fitting) in any of these shops, and he certainly didn’t want to waste all of the time he was going to have that he didn’t have to run everyone else’s errands. But as he was about to leave the town, something shiny caught his eye. A shop just at the end of the street was selling…. Weaponry? Most of it looked ancient, too. Cesar felt drawn to it for some reason. He slowly approached, his eyes locked on the source of the glint he’d seen in the first place. It was an old sword that looked like it’d been through quite a number of fights, with cracks and scrapes and dents all over it, but it’d been polished up to shine like it was brand new. Looked like it was made of iron and gold. Cesar simply had to buy it, though this time, he wouldn’t keep it just for himself. This was something to share with the boys, too.
That night, Cesar picked up his phone and decided to check in with the mafia. He’d never say it out loud, but he was a little bit proud of them for keeping things together this long without him there as their fearless leader. He dialed the number and examined the sword he’d bought as he waited for someone to pick up on the other end. Much to his amusement, it was his son,
Vito, who finally answered.
“Hey kid,” Cesar chuckled, “you’ll never believe what I found for the place.”
