To get to Mermaid Cove, first your kalon has to trek through the island's forest.
How is the hike, and what sorts of flora and fauna do they encounter?
Hiking! Now that was something that Annie could do. She trekked around the city enough, getting to all of her different destinations, so she was used to walking a lot. She didn't have a car, so her only modes of transportation were walking, Uber, or using the subway. Which, really, wasn't much different from a real jungle.
She packed up supplies - food, water, a spare jacket, and of course the new map - before putting on her backpack and started her trek. Making her way through town was nice and easy, although she did pause a few times to say hello to some of her new island friends. She'd chosen to leave in the early morning so it wouldn't be too hot. When the sun was overhead, she would hopefully have the shade of overhanging trees.
At first the jungle was the one she'd already partially explored. Lots of trees, big leaves, patches of long grass around the walking track. Your typical, run of the mill jungle. But then the map led her away from the well trodden path, to a windy dirt track almost obscured by overgrown nature. Plant leaves towered above her head, and she was slowed by the many vines she had to push away. She thought she'd be cooler in here, but the trees seemed to keep the heat in, and she craved a cool breeze to escape the humidity.
Things began looking up the further she went on. The path opened up more, and everything seemed to become more colorful. Tropical flowers grew close to the ground, all pinks and yellows, expelling a soft, floral fragrance. Birds chirped overhead, seeming unbothered by her presence. A few times they flew past in splashes of red and green plumage. Tiny frogs clung to trees and their branches, but she was sure not to disturb them. Now and again she heard curious chittering, but couldn't seem to pinpoint where it was coming from. Whatever it was, it sounded friendly. Despite being so far from the town, she felt surprisingly at ease.
She stopped for a quick break, sharing a few nuts with the local parrots, before continuing on her way. There seemed to be breaks in the leafy canopies overhead, and patches of buttery sunshine dappled the ground she walked upon. Above, glimpses of blue told her the sky was still as clear as ever.
There was a sudden light ahead, and she emerged out of the trees and onto a clifftop. She took a deep breath in of the fresh, tangy air and let it out slowly. Ahead, pristine water stretched out to form the cove, sparkling blue in the sunlight. The quiet waves lapped against the soft, golden sand, and there seemed to be a rocky cave at one end of the tiny beach. Peering over the cliff, she saw it was only a couple of meters high, and the path tapered down to join up to the ground.
"What a beautiful place!" she exclaimed aloud. Above, a lone seagull let out a cry as though in agreement. With a skip in her step she made her way down the path, eager to explore this new and wonderful area.

Prompt 7
The trip was an event to say the least. Having never been in such a humid and tropical location before she was having to stop and rehydrate more often. The trees and brush were a constant source of noise from the abundant insect and wildlife.
"Jeez could it get hotter?" Brushing her hair out her face for the twentieth time she realized hair ties would have been perfect to pack. Looking down at the map Latona wondered if the names gor these sites were literal or not. She had never meet a mermaid before and had secretly hoped she would the moment the map was read.
Just then a frantic flapping drew her attention upward as a slight weight added itself to her head. "Oh, hello there dear." Keeping her voice soft and slowly lowering herself to a sitting position she could just make out the bright feathers and flaming red beak hovering just in her peripheral. "I'm not much of a tree but I suppose we both could use a break." Reaching into the tan bag the had rested on her hip for the journey Latona pulled out a half eaten granola bar. "Would you like a snack? Its got berries and granola in it."

Even with the promise of mermaids, Roe was already suspicious of having to hike through nearly untouched jungle and wilderness in the first place. Did these locals even know what was in these thickly forested parts at all? He doubted even Carter knew what was through here. For all they knew, there could be giant man eating jungle cats, or a whole tribe of cannibalistic psychos waiting for them on the other side of this thicket. Ugh.
Sucking it up anyways with the thought of seeing real life mermaids and Aden tugging him on the arm in excitement, he pushed forward. Caro promised it would only be a short walk luckily, even though that 'short walk' was easier said than done.
They spotted no giant man eating jungle cats or cannibalistic tribes but what they did discover was much, much worse.
Bugs.
The mosquitos felt like they were a different breed out here, a super, mega mosquito. They pinched at his arms and ankles and everywhere skin was visible to the outside world. Which, given he had only swim outfits and sun dresses in his wardrobe, meant he was pretty exposed. He felt his temper snap when one stung him right in the eyebrow, and could feel it swell under his reactive touch. He was so ready to go home, mermaids be damned.

Trevor was very excited to have obtained the other part of the map. However, as he stood at the edge of the woods, he was not looking forward to this hike. Being heavyset was not pleasant for hiking but it was made worse because it was his least favorite outdoor activity. Still, his curiosity spurred him onward and he found his legs moving while his mind was still in turmoil.
Onward he pressed through the underbrush, staring at the map most of the time. He paused in awe of a few bright yellow small birds that looked a lot like humming birds. He tilted his head curiously, thinking his sister might know what type they were. Shrugging, he checked the map again and moved forward.
As he was walking, he was so fixated on the map and not getting lost, he didn't notice he was scratching his right leg a lot. Right before he believe he was about to reach the Cove, he groaned and hunched down to really scratch his leg with purpose. "Aw hell..." He muttered, looking back and sighing at all the Poison Ivy he had been tromping through. "I swear I hate the woods..." He grumbled, standing back up and finally making his way out of the trees.

nikolai really wasn't much of an outdoors person. he was about to lose his mind thanks to how "eventful" the cruise had been, and now he was almost being forced to hike through what appeared to be a jungle just for a few mermaids? what gives? were mermaids really that great? they can't be that much better than ghosts, right?
however, as he had learned from previous experience, no amount of complaining or resisting could save him from his fate, whether he'd be coaxed by the ghosts circling around him or the people around him whose names he never bothered to learn. in a few short words, nikolai was basically royally screwed!
he was forced to hike, but no amount of begging or coaxing was able to convince him to stop every so often and admire the scenery. what was there even to admire in a jungle, anyways? it's just plants and more plants. there were, of course, also bugs, but he really didn't feel like going there.
that being said, he truly did see a lot of green vines. they were everywhere, from being coiled up in the branches far above his head to snaking around the ground near his feet. sometimes, they'd move too... wait, what?
moving vines?
weren't they basically snakes?
that was it. nikolai hated snakes with a passion, and without giving a second glance at the jungle, he started to run for his life.
mermaids could come later.

How is the hike, and what sorts of flora and fauna do they encounter? | ThatPinkThing | sign up postThankfully, the hike was relatively calm. With the way the map piece had been torn off and how Shark had reacted when he found out Eleanor had it now, she was expecting to feel like Indiana Jones going on some sort of dangerous, trap-dodging adventure. But the toughest part of the hike was the thick undergrowth.
Eleanor had donned athletic leggings, boots, shorts, a tanktop, and her backpack filled with anything she might need. She had almost forgot about the weight she carried as she walked, but a tempting sensation began to creep up her leg. She reached down without thinking to scratch her exposed ankle, and stopped. She looked back the way she had come. There, hidden by the taller plants... was poison ivy. Eleanor snatched her hand up above the plant's level, determined not to got it on her arm as well. "Ugh, great!" She mumbled as she planted her hands on her backpack straps and began jogging. No use putting anti-itch cream on until she was out of the woods. What a start.
When she finally broke clear of the woods, Eleanor ran a few more feet to be safe before she threw herself on the cove's sand. Rustling through her bag, she found her small first aid kit and fetched what she wanted: anti-itch cream and wraps to cover her exposed ankles. "Not going that way back." She mumbled to herself as she worked. When she finished, she finally had time to look up and admire the view.
"Oh, wow..." She gasped.

Prompt 7
featured or mentioned: Anthony (registered), Musashi, Andre, Abel, Teddy, Tori ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────"A man and a woman walked on the beach, hands interlocked with the water occasionally washing over their bare feet. The sun was beginning to melt into the ocean, giving it an maroon hue and silhouetting the young woman who walked closer to the water. Her beautiful features laughed after he a joke, and the curly haired boy could only think of how much he loved her in that moment. Just the two of them, walking hand in hand by the shore, alone on that south-westernmost part of the beach. This time, a jokingly sarcastic comment escaped her pretty lips, and he playfully grabbed her in his arms, lifting her up and spinning her around as she shrieked with delight. Around them, a small group of crabs could be seen walking around, as the sun gradually sank into the water.
Eventually the sun was completely absorbed by the sea which reflected the many stars above them. The pair found themselves gazing above them, laying on the cool sand. The woman clung to his arm as they wordlessly thanked the universe for allowing to be in this place, at this time. Her eyes slowly closed, drifting to sleep, while Anthony soon would follow her, content and happy. " ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────
