Shark’s warning lay as a heavy thought in the back of Prince’s mind as he slowly made his way across the island. His head tilted to view the tops of the soaring trees. The jungle stood — proud and dark — before him, the shadows beckoning him forward. As Prince took the first step into the wilderness, an eerie silence took place of the bustling noise from the populated island. Sand melted away, the mossy jungle floor taking its place. As he trekked through the frighteningly dark jungle, his eyes traveled along the twisting branches, and long shadows before him. Prince mumbled comforting things to himself, though when a twig snapped behind him, followed by the loud crash of dead leaves, he let out a yelp and ran through the winding trunks. His breath hissed from his tightened throat as the footsteps grew closer. Prince snapped his head to the right to steal a glance at the creature following him. He was met with emptiness. Prince yelled as he ran into something hard, falling to the ground. He looked up through wild curls, his maw dropping. An incredibly tall stag stood there, its chest puffed and proud. The long, nimble legs were at least half of Prince’s height, and a huge set of curling antlers topped the creature’s head. Specks of bright coloration littered its fur, ranging from neon green to pastel orange. One large eye blinked in the middle of its forehead, a kaleidoscope of colors within its iris. More noise came from behind Prince, and he swiveled his head to see another, slightly smaller deer appear. It was a beautiful doe, fur crystal white. It had one large eye as well, along with the colorful speckling of the male. And from behind the doe, two small deer tumbled across the ground. They playfully pushed into each other, butting heads. Tiny sets of antlers sat atop each head of the fawns, one a deep green, the other a light purple. They studied Prince with their own large eye, stepping forward to sniff him. The stag puffed at the Kalon beneath him, stepping over him delicately and joining his family. Prince scrambled to shaking paws, watching as the deer pranced in the opposite direction. Trails of light followed their footsteps.

Prince had been walking for quite some time when he found the statue. It was a Kalon — to scale — made of what looked like silver. It sat with its legs crossed, 3 sets of arms raised around it. 4 eyes stared back at Prince, a devilish grin on the statue’s face. There was a plate on the ground before the statue, shiny and new. It read in stark black lettering: “Boa
προστάτης του ζούγκλας”
As Prince struggled to decipher the strange language, the sound of scraping stone gathered his attention. As he looked up, he noticed the first set of arms crossed over the statue’s chest. Prince leapt away from the statue, rubbing his eyes. When he looked back up, the arms were back in place. Though he could swear the smile was a little wider.

Sun filtered through the trees as the vast jungle began to dissipate around him. Prince had already been walking for hours when his eyes met the crystal tide. He rushed through the thick foliage, paws meeting warm sand. As he broke from the jungle, a whisp of wind blew his hair wildly. He looked back to the trees, but their leaves sat still.

He had heard many tales of mermaids and the beautifully unmatched powers they can possess; but, as mythical as he was himself, Juri had never yet seen one of these gorgeous creatures - and at this unexpected opportunity, he wasted no time heading off into the forest. At first it was very ordinary, and while forests were far from his favorite places, it wasn't anything that he had no experience with. He didn't expect the travel to be as difficult as he was warned.
Oddly, it soon felt as if a spell had been cast over him, or perhaps he was so entranced with this new quest that his perception was altered. For whichever reason, the flora and fauna he passed was growing more unfamiliar as he ventured further. Jumping to far conclusions, he thought maybe this part of the island itself was enchanted, but varied depending on who went through it. The flowers around him became more vibrant, the way they grew started to resemble streaming fireworks and floating lanterns, and the color of the sky itself slowly shifted to a pale pink right before his eyes; it seemed to want to remind him very specifically of his home. He caught glimpses of little animals that darted past, with long tails and swaying motions that resembled the rays in the ocean. Their fur all seemed to sparkle. It had to be a ruse - it had to be an illusion toying with him. But it only made him more determined, for the warning gave him excitement. No, his first guesses weren't right, the forest itself must be alive, or maybe these mermaids had powers to manipulate it - but it was clear that the familiar feelings it manifested were meant to draw wanderers closer. And that's exactly what he intended to do. However, his steps became slower as the forest grew more magical. Soundless fireworks now rose up into the pink sky, wrapped in countless stars, and he could barely describe the animals in that moment, which all looked like a mix between normal ones and various sea creatures. He wasn't sure why so many were even there; they just seemed to appear, and watch him back. It was simply unbelievable that he encountered something like this here, almost too tempting to relish in and stop moving.. but he couldn't be swayed from his goal.
Forcing himself to face the ground only, which was covered in shimmering grass, he fought to disassociate himself from his surroundings and walked faster. He didn't know how much time had passed, but he knew when he reached the end - he cautiously lifted his head, to which the scenes were gone, back to the simpler mysterious aura it had before he started. It brought a smile.

SilentMelody | Azrail | squid | How is the hike, and what sorts of flora and fauna do they encounter? | 269 words
Despite being the angel of death, Azrail hasn't seen a mermaid before -- not even to take them to the afterlife. Perhaps they are immortal? He doesn't have a clue. Shark definitely seems wary of them though.
The hike over is gorgeous. The trees are a bright green with long leaves offering shade and blooming orange flowers. Some birds hop from tree to tree and call to each other, dancing. A different animal calls from afar and scares some of them, but they settle down together. It was a long time since Azrail had last been in a tropical forest.
As he got closer to the cove, the night begins to fall and he can feel a sort of magic in the air. It sends chills through him, and he unfolds his invisible wings to embrace it. Fireflies approach Azrail, and instead of glowing their usual yellow they glow a light purple. A kinkajou scurries down a tree trunk and peers at the bugs, its pupils shining purple in the reflection of the fireflies. He crouches down and opens a palm, welcoming it. The mammal sprints over and onto Azrail's arm, eventually landing on his shoulder.
The jungle suddenly turns a purple as well -- or at least, it seems to. Upon closer inspection, he sees that it's only bathed in purple light. Glancing up, Azrail notices that the moon has turned lavender. Tree frogs croak and cling to tree trunks, drawn to the light. All of the animals seem surprised by the change in their habitat.
Azrail smiles wistfully and continues on, not minding the kinkajou still on his shoulder.

How is the hike, and what sorts of flora and fauna do they encounter?
Sycamore's eyes lit up like christmas lights as soon as she realized she'd just been handed free reign to wander off into the thick growth and observe all of the plants that grew on this beautiful island. She'd get to stroke their leaves and observe the things that helped them grow so plentifully here - she'd even be able to sneak a few samples on her way through! Of course, mermaids were cool too, but her mind was completely focused on the flora. Even the animals weren't that interesting to her mind beyond how they interacted with all of the greenery around them.
As she walked, Sycamore didn't even notice the hard work that the hiking was. She looked like a child in a candy store, her eyes wandering from spot to spot, unable to focus.
The giant leaves, the bountiful fuchsia-colored blooms... the scent of rain and soil hung heavy in the air and made her a little dizzy like the best perfume she'd ever smelled. She dreamed of her own greenhouse smelling like this. Even the ivy that she kept bumping into was charming in her eyes, she gently nudged it out of her way like you would softly move a child or a beloved pet.
She'd brought water along to drink, but ended up giving most of it to a few thirsty-looking plants on her way.
It was so nice being under the leaves away from the heavy sun that Sycamore pondered to herself if she could pretend to get lost here. Feign innocence as she missed this whole 'mermaid' thing and just stay here until the boat was all fixed up and they were ready to get her back home to her babies. "Look at you!" She cooed as she knelt to observe a rather tiny venus flytrap - she did have a few of these already, but this one was so small and cute!
But before she knew it, she was out the other side of the forest. Sycamore let out a heavy sigh as she realized she'd have to go on with it and find these elusive mermaids.
As she kept walking, she cast a longing glance back over her shoulder at the forest. "Don't worry, my pretties, I'll be back soon!"
