"It's a filthy world they live in."
The sturdy man cracked a wicked smile as he reached behind his broad shoulders, the crisp noise of an arrow sliding from its place a familiar thing. He strung the arrow lazily between his fingers, looking back to his companion, who was frail and small beside him. She held a clipboard in trembling hands, notes long forgotten as her trainer tightened his grip on the arrow. Lux easily pulled the elegant, pink-hued arrow back, the chord tightening as it glistened in the milky moonlight. It's tip was a deep maroon, and shaped like a razor-sharp heart. Small sparks of light seemed to twirl amongst the air around the arrow, bending reality.
"In a place like this, pain and suffering is everywhere."
Lux shot the arrow, the woman wincing as it hit its mark perfectly. Despite their place on the highest rooftop in the city, Lux had no issue shooting into windows a mile away with the innovated bow, as a gift from headquarters. This made their job more efficient. The bosses liked it that way.
"There's nothin' nobody ever got outta this life worth taking on to the next. Nothin' but selfish, physical belongings to gain here."
Lux continued to shoot, a sort of calm delight burning in his gaze. The woman cleared her throat roughly, forcing the words from her lips.
"I-If you really think so lowly of these mortals, than why do what you do? You're Eros's marksman, after all. Why bring them a gift like love?"
Lux paused. He slowly turned towards her, a grin present on his maw as the moonlight danced within his pupils.
"Don't be fooled by the way Eros portrays love, dear. Love is no gift. Love is the worst form of punishment imaginable."
"And how is that?"
"Like i've said, these mortals are selfish beings. Best to leave them to worldly possessions, and that alone. But strong emotions, like love? These people can never accept whom they're destined to love."
Lux turned back to his work, letting loose an arrow, which hurtled through the air and exploded into dust onto the back of a man sleeping in his apartment.
"And it's my job to fulfill their greatest desires. Which will always be someone they cannot have."
"Why? Can they not see who their destined ones are to be?"
"Nope. And they never seem to. It's hard to believe, but they're even selfish with their own hearts."
As the sun began to rise once more, people awoke to a strange feeling. Something felt different today. Something felt lovely.
