"Another one???" The shocked black and white buck said aloud, so shocked he didn't even realize he was doing so. The rest of the rabbits huddled around him, wanting to get a look at the newcomer as well. It seemed like everyone- with the exception of Myrtia as usual- was at least a little bit skeptical of the newcomer who claimed to be the Emissary of Frith, especially when they had been dealing with the current Emissary that was more of a nuisance than a blessing at this point.
The white lop eared rabbit tilted their head at the Rah's words. "Excuse me?" They said in a soft but confused voice, seemingly unaware that there had been another creature who claimed to be the Emissary that came before the warren and tried to do the very same thing that the lop eared rabbit was currently trying to do.
"I think what Igetis-rah was trying to say was," The fawn like doe, Bittersweet, said as she stepped around the black and white colored buck to get closer to the newcomer. "We weren't really expecting to find an Emissary of Frith around here, especially not one that is as lovely as you are..." She let her voice trail off, not knowing whether to make the rabbit feel better and want to stay or whether to be honest and tell them to get lost.
"How can we know that you're the real Emissary?" Came the voice of the brown and white speckled doe, Dynami, who was standing directly to Igetis-rah's right, her sibling using her as a shield of sorts. The lop eared rabbit's eyes shifted from Bittersweet to Igetis-rah to Dynami, not registering what they were trying to tell them. "A chipmunk came here a couple of weeks ago just like you did and claimed to be the Emissary. We let him in and now our Warren is in shambles from all of his gifts."
The rest of the warren rabbits nodded their heads in agreement at Dynami's bold words. Mamaro, the black appaloosa colored rabbit who was hiding behind their older sibling. They peered at the newcomer from their hiding place, a sense of unease rippling through their body. It was a reminder of their gift - and their curse - of seeing things from the future. Dynami was the only one who knew that the appaloosa rabbit had a vision of this happening, and that it didn't end well. Mamaro had made their sister promise them that if this vision had come true to try to give it a different ending.
"A chipmunk? Being an Emissary for the sacred Frith?" the lop eared rabbit asked in their familiar soft voice, looking less confused and a little bit offended at this point. "How would that even work? A rabbit's god communicating with and choosing a member of a different species to do their bidding? That seems like a load of nonsense to me."
Igetis-rah stepped forward, his emerald eyes set on the newcomer. "Your words make a lot of sense, but it would put myself and my warren at ease if we could somehow prove you were the real Emissary as you so claim to be." He took a breath as he paused, allowing for the lop eared rabbit to process what it was that he was saying. "We seem to have been duped once before and I have no plans of letting it happen again. Is there anything you can do to prove you are who you say you are?"
With all the commotion of the arrival of the white lop eared rabbit who claimed to be the true Emissary of Frith, the rabbits of Deerbarrow Warren almost forgot one of their favorite parts of the festival - the making and wearing of flower crowns. It was a tradition that their leader, Igetis-rah had only heard of in stories, while the rabbits who had been members of other warrens knew of the tradition fondly.
"It's easy, Igetis-rah!" The excited voice of Bittersweet chimed one morning while the rabbits were getting ready to get breakfast. "Remember how we built that grass hutch? How we had to weave together the bits of grass to make it stay together?"
The leader nodded, not looking at the fawn colored doe as he was grooming a patch of fur that was stubbornly sticking up no matter how much he tried to tame it. "I remember that," he said, pausing to spit out a small tuft of fur that had come out onto his tongue in his grooming. "I don't really know what good it did, however."
"This is kind of like how we wove them together, but this is just to lift up our spirits. Just for fun," Bittersweet continued, watching Siopi from the corner of her eye as she talked to gauge his reaction. Things had been tense between the two of them since the coming of the first Emissary of Frith, and as much as she wished he'd react well to this enough for them to get to laugh and get on better terms, the black and tan buck pretended not to notice. "Can we at least try?"
"If it helps to get everyone in a better mood, then go for it." Igetis-rah replied before he went back to his grooming session. While he personally had no interest in celebrating the rest of the festivities, he thought it would be a good activity for the rest of the warren to raise their spirits a little.
"Great! I'll go round up the rest of the rabbits together for you. Just make sure to come out once you're done grooming!" She said excitedly before rushing off to gather the rest of the rabbits.
The black and white buck exhaled slowly before working on the grooming, finishing a little while later. Once he was done, he made his way out of the burrow to check up on the rest of the warren rabbits. They were all gathered around a large pile of flowers, and most of them were talking among themselves happily. All except for the one mute rabbit in the warren, that is. Siopi sat a little farther away from the rest of the warren, not participating in the activity of picking out the flowers for a crown, but making an effort to be there despite his doubts and whatnot. It had a positive effect on the fawn colored doe, who was beaming while she flitted around the rest of the rabbits, helping them pick out different flowers and showing them how to weave them together properly.
527/500 wrote:"I hate to say I told you so, Kimono-rah, but I told you so!" Araki huffed in exasperation as he hopped around the pure white rabbit with odd ears, a deep frown placed firmly on his face. "There's no way Frith would choose any creature other than a rabbit to be His emissary, but noooo.. you wanted to believe that embleer chipmunk!"
"Araki, with all due respect, shut up," Taketa huffed with a glare as he sat beside his oldest friend, who'd pulled her ears down over her face not long after they had come across the newcomer and had been that way since. "You sound like a kit who's Mum just told it no for the first time."
The blue and white buck scoffed and thumped his foot in annoyance briefly before hopping away to cool off, making sure to keep an eye on the confused white rabbit in front of the group, who decided to speak up at that moment. "Sorry.. I may be understanding this incorrectly, but are you all saying that a chipmunk has been impersonating an emissary of Frith-rah?"
Kimono finally lifted her head and shook out her ears with a slight nod, eyes dark as she stared at the entrance tunnels to her home. "Unfortunately. it seems to be true.. someone - chipmunk or strange rabbit - has come to my home and pretended to be one of Frith's honoured emissaries. Who it is, however, has yet to be discovered, but believe me: we will discover this today," she insisted with a huff, jaw tight as her short claws clawed into the grass below her. "I will not be made a fool of in my own home, thank you very much!"
The lop-eared newcomer took a slight step forward with a paw outstretched as if to calm the frustrated doe but the blue rabbit bared her teeth and snapped at the approaching limb, her ears pinned back against her head. "Kindly do not touch me," she huffed before turning to her companions and jerking her head towards the entrance. "Araki and Taketa, would you two boys be kind enough to tell our visiting chipmunk that I'd like to have a word with him? Now."
Araki nodded immediately and disappeared down the tunnels with a slight grin while Taketa looked a little hesitant and didn't move from his place beside the Rah. "I understand how you're feeling, Kimono, but don't make irrational decisions here. While it's a little unlikely, Frith may have just sent two emissaries and simply didn't expect them to end up at the same warren. He may be a rah, but he isn't all-knowing - just like you.." he murmured softly in her ear.
Kimono-rah was silent in response and simply watching the elder rabbit until he sighed and hopped away to assist Araki with his assigned task, only leaving his parting words of: "Just consider it." She waited until he disappeared into the darkness before lifting her chin and turning back to the white rabbit who was still cowering back from the previous snap. "You better have a way to prove your words or I'll feed you to the elil myself."
