Nadir Demirci: Consigliere of the Turkish Mafia

Postby zacherie » Sun Jan 04, 2015 4:12 am

N A D I R____D E M I R C I
"rare" in Arabic, "the lowest point" in English

Omertà ● Consigliere ● Vendetta ● Wiseguy ● Loan Shark

____________________________________________

Omertà | ❝ Remember what I told you: you don't say a word to anyone. Zip, nada. ❞
Omertà. The code of silence and loyalty. To be loyal to the mafia is to be silent, and silent he is. A secret is best kept with Nadir, and Nadir can be counted on to never betray the mafia. But beware, for he will silence others in one way...or another.

Consigliere | ❝ I settle the disputes. You either listen up, or you'll be paying your way out of the mess you made. ❞
The Consigliere is an adviser of the Boss, a channel of communication to the Boss, and presides over conflict with no vendettas. And sure, he does all of the above with no qualms. But everyone has a vendetta, everyone needs to hide something from the Boss, and everyone is out for themselves. No one knows this better than Nadir. And he exploits these human characteristics like the devil.

        Vendetta | ❝ Next time I see you, you're dead. ❞
A man with a vendetta is a hard man to deter. Nadir with a vendetta is rather terrifying. Not only does he target the one he has the grudge on, but he will also target the others in that family. Since a vendetta, once acted upon, spreads the hatred to the rest of the family, it is of utmost importance to ruin the whole family before trying to to take out the root of the vendetta. And Nadir is quite adept at it.

Wiseguy | ❝ Don't try to mess with me, wise guy. I'm a wiseguy myself, and you don't wanna mess with me. ❞
A wiseguy is another term for someone in the mafia, which is quite exactly what Nadir is. Nadir is also a sarcastic, blunt kind of wiseguy. Whatever he finds fault with, he'll note -- with a hint of sarcasm. Unless he's talking to the Boss or the Underboss; then, he loses the sarcasm. But he will, no matter what, be upfront with the person he speaks to, which has been one of the reasons he is feared and respected throughout the mafia community and beyond.

Loan Shark | ❝ Kiss your hard-earned money goodbye -- like you did to your wife. ❞
A loan shark offers loans at exorbitant interest rates, and this is exactly how Nadir rakes in his own salary. He uses fear and intimidation to his advantage to coerce his carefully chosen victims into accepting the loans, and he seems to profit immensely from this practice. It is rumored that he has more money than the Boss himself, but that is merely a rumor that will never be confirmed.

A Simple Game

      "Nadir, I tried, I really --"

"Demirci. Address me by my last name. I don't make exceptions, even if you are my... aunt."

The aunt pursed her lips, indignant at his curt, heartless response. But she sighed, and slumped into the chair behind the store counter as Nadir paced in front of the counter, massaging his head as he tried to figure out a way to deal with this situation and this... family member of his.

"Why," Nadir finally started, "would you ever send for an assassin to kill a Capo. And one of our best, most feared Capos, at that." He grabbed a stool from the far left corner of the dingy store, and dragged it across the tile floor, creating an earsplitting screech, like fingernails scratching a blackboard. His aunt winced as he dragged the stool. When he finally dragged the stool up to the store counter, he set it right across his aunt and seated himself on the stool.

"If you want to know what happened to your hired assassin, let me tell you that he's probably dead or dying," he said in a hushed voice as he leaned forward, crossing his arms. "But, but. Not before that Capo got your name outta his mouth, oh no," he laughed -- a hoarse foreboding laugh -- "of course he got a name outta the assassin. You know how I know this? One of his loudmouthed lackeys was going hysterical over this whole story of the assassin that couldn't take out his great Capo. Then one of the other lackeys asked who sent the assassin, and your name was uttered."

      Silence.

"God, why would you entangle yourself in this situation?" he decried. "Honestly, what the hell were you thinking?"

"He talked smack on me, which got me mad, and then he talked smack on you and said he'd kill you one day, and your mother -- my sister -- made me promise that you be safe under my watch," she said firmly, snarling through her teeth.

"What people say about me is none of your business, first of all," he retaliated with a growl, "and secondly, what you did not only hurts your image, but mine as well. I'm linked to you, unfortunately, and your folly stains my reputation. And third, even if he said he'd kill me, there's literally no way he'd be able to kill me. I'm higher up than he is, and I've also recently secured all the assassins and hit men in the area to make sure none of them are ever hired to kill me. Your connection to me also probably allowed you to even secure an assassin to go kill someone higher up like that in the first place."

"And now, he's out for you," he said, looking directly into his aunt's eyes, "at least to agitate me. Why would he bother to kill someone as low as you for the feeling of satisfaction. He'd only kill you to try to agitate me." He sighed and stood up, standing with his back turned to his aunt. "But no bother, the joke's on him," he said, a wicked smirk spreading across his face, "because I don't care what happens to you."

"Now you wait just a second," the aunt said, rising from her chair to confront him face to face. "You, Mr. Demirci, don't care about what happens to me, a family member?"

"You're one of the worst in the family," Nadir merely stated, turning away from her again.

"But just remember. Think about it, Demirci," the aunt warned, a twisted grin on her face, "if the Capo decides to come kill me and find your hard-earned loot in my basement."

This was when Nadir froze. God, of course that would happen, how could he forget? Damn. You were such an idiot for entrusting her with your money four years ago, he chastised himself. You know she has dirty tricks up her sleeve.

But no matter. He still had his own tricks in store for her.

"Alright, alright. You got me," Nadir said, holding his hands up in the air. "I cannot risk you being killed so that all my money is discovered."

The aunt beamed, clearly proud of her craftiness. But Nadir was not done yet. He would never acquiesce so easily.

He slowly made his way toward the counter, reached into his coat pocket, and set down 2 dice on the counter. "Monopoly dice," he said, fiddling around with the dice. "I believe you should remember these pieces."

"Is it from my Monopoly game set?" she questioned, walking back behind the counter. "I remember you playing Monopoly with my son all those years ago. So you took them. He used to wonder where the dice were. Couldn't play the game anymore, and now we know why."

"That's precisely correct, I did end up taking them. Components of a simple game," Nadir said with a nod, "like life. Now, roll the dice."

      "What?"

      "Roll the dice."

      Silence.

With an apprehensive look on her face, the aunt rolled the dice, revealing a two and a six.

"Every two weeks, you pay me twelve hundred dollars for your protection against the Capo, who's sure to come after you," Nadir declared, as he scooped up the dice, preparing to leave. "The two determined how often you had to pay, and the six was multiplied by two hundred and that's the amount you have to pay me. I await my payments."

"Protection? Payments?" she asked, dramatically putting a hand to her chest. "Darling, I think you need to understand who holds the power in this transaction here," she cooed, dangling the basement keys in front of him. "I believe you need the protection."

"I hold the power," Nadir simply stated, as he swiveled around and swiped her keys, tossing them on the counter. "I know all about your exploits from your heyday, and many of the nasty predicaments you got yourself into even before I was born," he threatened. "You'd be in trouble if I brought them up. Especially if a certain affair happened to come up to the Boss's attention. You'd surely be dead."

To this, the aunt stiffened. Wherever he heard it from, she did not need Nadir to trumpet around town with that delicate piece of information. Of course it had to be the Capo she had tried to kill who was involved in the matter Nadir was waving in front of her. That made everything much more complicated.

"I could always tell everyone about your money before anyone tries to take me out," she tried to retort, although fear glistened in her eyes.

"Then I simply hire someone to track your every move," Nadir jeered. "You really cannot win with this one," he simply replied, patting her on the back, "although I did have a good laugh at your attempts to try and win."

"You see," he sneered, "if there's one thing that I've learned, it's that life is a game." He took out his dice, weighing it in his hands. "I've discovered its rules and figured out all of my players," he continued. He tossed the dice up in the air -- "And I intend to win, no matter what." -- and swiped them from midair.

"I'll be expecting that twelve hundred by the time I come back two weeks later," he called out as he walked toward the door. "And instead of staying furious or flabbergasted, I'd suggest scrambling to get twelve hundred dollars."

With that, Nadir Demirci left, and the aunt sat hunched behind the counter, now wondering how the hell she'd be able to scrape twelve hundred dollars every two weeks. Outside, she could see a dark figure guarding her store. If anything, at least he did what he said he'd do.

      Silence.
      - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Nadir had had a similar talk with the Capo in question earlier that day. Of course, it couldn't be as informal as the encounter with his troublesome aunt; the Capo would probably try to strangle him if he just showed up at the Capo's place. He had set up a harmless ambush: Nadir's most trusted hit man would ambush the Capo and take him to Nadir's office, so that the Capo would be powerless to try and kill him then.

Then he sat him down and talked to him about this little dispute of theirs. How Nadir's rise to Consigliere was merely a product of the Boss taking a liking to him -- favoritism at work. How the Capo was supposed to be Consigliere, how everything had gone according to plan until Nadir had shown up in his little, naive self all those years ago as a lost link to one of the most respected and feared mafioso in the Turkish mafia community. The Boss liked this link; he had envied this link for so long, but he was content enough to have the link by his side, doing his bidding, as Consigliere. It gave the Boss the sensation of a kind of control: a control over a most feared and respected mafioso's grandson. And the Capo hated this.

Nadir had said, "Why, you've got me there. What would I be without nepotism. I could order my hit man to strangle you right now, but I shan't. I am Consigliere for a reason. Any dispute, I must deal with fairly. And killing you seems to be an unfair advantage for me right now."

"My aunt, she tried to send someone after you, and I apologize on her behalf. But, I believe that this dispute is closed now. She will not send anyone after you anymore, and you will not be sending anyone after her either," Nadir said, trying to close the case. But the Capo was persistent, of course. He went on about how this kind of disrespect should be going to the Boss. Nadir tried to interject with his point that Capo trying to kill Consigliere was disrespect as well, but the Capo wouldn't hear it.

This was when Nadir divulged all of the Capo's secrets, from his affairs to his run-ins with several other members of the mafia while he was still a lackey of the mafia. The Capo's face grew grimmer and grimmer as he listened to his whole story being told in front of him. "Roll the dice," Nadir had merely stated, after divulging all of Capo's secrets, handing him the dice. The Capo took it in his nervous, sweating palms, and rolled a three and a four.

"Perfect. Every three months, I'll be asking for a four thousand dollar payment to me so that I may never divulge these matters to the Boss," he declared, scooping up his dice. "Three dots: three months. One month for one dot. Four dots: four thousand dollars. One thousand for one dot."

When the Capo started to protest, the Consigliere silenced him. "You decided to roll the dice; you rolled your own fate," Nadir shrugged. "Let me tell you a quick story," he had said, "I used to play a lot of Monopoly when I was a child. I used to always lose. But you know what I learned? I learned the rules, the patterns, the players. And I figured out how to win. Life, after all," he said, as he escorted the Capo out, "is just a game. An elaborate game, but just a game."

He slammed the door in the Capo's face. "I expect four thousand in three months," a muffled voice rang out from behind locked doors. "And don't try to wiggle your way out of this, because I'm sending a hit man to watch you like a hawk."

      Silence.
      - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Nadir smirked, thinking about all the money he had just made from the two. It would be a steady flow of money for him. He took out a few hundred as he left his aunt's, and he now walked toward the Boss's office. As he stepped inside, the Boss gave him a curt nod, acknowledging his presence.

"Anything going on tonight?" the Boss asked, as Nadir handed him the wad of cash. Nadir feigned being in deep thought. He then shook his head.

"No, nothing, Boss," he simply replied. "Nothing at all."
