- his past: "Where's daddy, momma?" a young, impressionable voice spoke with wonder and curiosity. "He's working, sweetheart." a softer and loving voice strained. She knew where he was and what she was doing, she just prayed that her little boy, Chánh, wouldn't have a brush with his 'work'. "Momma, why are you crying? Be happy momma !!" chánh began to sing to her, skipping in circles with a large, spotty smile. You hear a motherly giggle before all sounds fade.
--
- "Dad, where are you going?" A bit bigger chánh asked a large silhouette. "I gotta do some business, eat your snack and watch the TV or somethin. I'll be back as soon as I can, squirt." A deeper voice started out gruff, and lifted at the end. Although still young, his father had told him the 'job' he was in. In all honesty? Chánh thought that it was quite interesting, but he didn't know half of what the job entailed. All he knew was that his dad was the boss in his little group, and he wanted to be just like him. Big, strong, and in charge. He could see himself ordering others to go do his bidding, giving them rewards of riches and his love. Chánh really had the business in a bind in his mind. He thought he could be fair, loving, and still be on top in the end. He'd find out when he's older that he can only be one of the two of those. "You gotta be careful of who ya 'love' in this business, squirt." His dad would say one late night while little chánh was eating crackers in front of the TV. "Some come back to bite you in the end." he grumbled. His dad went off to bed. Although he never saw his dad much, he loved him as much as his little heart could take. All he wanted was his dad to be proud. His mom had always assured him that she loved him, she was so lovely. It had been four years since she had passed, he was seven now. Even if it had been four or forty years, the thought of her always got a tear to fall. "Dad, I wanna know more about your job. Can you tell me about it?" and that's when chánh was suddenly snatched up by his father with a nod, tossed in the car, and was driven to the main base. He was introduced to everyone, and it seemed that everyone was out to impress the boss's son. One member offered him an antique toy car, while another offered fifty dollars. 'This is a big change.' at school he was treated like any other child, at home he was the only person there to entertain himself, but here? Here he was treated like he was important, like he was worth something. In a way, he was important. You anger the boss's son? You could get thrown out on the streets or worse. Chánh would never tell his dad if he disliked one of them, though. He was too soft. That's when he really started to get to know what being the leader was like, and how tough upholding a gang was. Even more, what a gang is and how they work.

Chánh was now twenty two years old, a youngster still but old enough to be integrated fully into his dad's gang. Of course he wasn't head honcho, but Chánh was determined to impress his father. More importantly, get the acceptance of his dad. Chánh knew the is and outs of this business now, all but one. He didn't know about the 'hits' they put out on people. Not even fully understanding what the word meant, all he could do was speculate. Chánh was still the boldest, youngest, and most fair of the gang. He still loved the guys like brothers... but chánh knew there needed to be distance between them. It took time to build trust, real trust, with the whole gang. Chánh did everything he could to help out, especially things that would impress his dad. Getting acceptance was a long and fruitless endeavor in all honesty. Chánh wouldn't give up. Weeks later, there was a hit placed upon his father's head and the gang had no clue about it. His father was thrown into the hospital for a fatal wound, and passed that night. His last words were to Chánh, which were "Son, I'm sorry you gotta see me go. You've done so much even when I wasn't there for ya. I love you, you made me proud to be a dad." and there he went into the light. Chánh as now left being the leader of his father's gang and a broken family.
