Prompt 17
Caia, Ada, Gale
word count: 515
Caia led her two companions as they rounded the corner of the path. A thick mist surrounded them, punctuated by dim lights that could be seen on the sides of the road every so often. Their orange glow did little to help the group see, and Ada often stumbled off of the path as she walked.
Caia's claws clicked against the slick stones she stood upon. Though her vision was limited by the fog, she could see that her muddy paws starkly contrasted the polished white material that comprised the walkway. Even though it was presently raining, it was still easily apparent that the castle and its surroundings were routinely cared for. She let out a small sigh, knowing that the pleasant exterior appearance hid darkness within.
She stopped mid-stride as her paw collided with the first, low step of a short staircase. She could only guess that they were closing in on the castle's front door, and the notion ignited a spark of fear in the pit of her stomach. Was she really going to be able to finish this journey?
a kalon-shaped lump of orange fur landed beside her. Ada had tripped over the first step, as Caia almost had. "Watch out." Caia warned, failing to hold back laughter. Ada grumbled and stood up, shaking out her now ruffled and wet fur.
"Thanks." She said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
"That's the happiest I've seen you all day, Caia." Gale remarked with a snicker. Ada punched him on the shoulder, still muttering under her breath.
"Let's just get to the damn castle." She said, her face still red with embarrassment and annoyance.
A blindingly bright, white beam of light struck the trio by surprise, hitting Gale directly in the eyes and causing him to duck and wince in pain. "What the..." Caia mumbled, shielding her eyes as she lifted her gaze to the source of the spotlight. It seemed to be projected directly from a window in the castle, which was, now that it was visible... massive.
The structure rose high above the kalons' heads, taller than any building they'd encountered in this land. The peaks of the castle's towers seemed to pierce the cloud cover. Large windows, though abundant throughout the building, were almost all veiled by thick curtains. The castle seemed to be entirely composed of the same white bricks as the path leading to it, but it gave off a strange, dark purple glow.
No voice or warning had accompanied the spotlight, but it certainly signified that they'd been spotted. "Let's go!" Ada urged, tugging the other two kalons up the remainder of the staircase and to the large, golden handled door.
With a last glance at the members of her party, Caia stepped in front of Ada and stretched out an arm to the smoothed wooden surface. She took a deep breath, and pushed.
...
Wait- it was a pull door.
She took a slight step back, another breath in, and tugged on the bright, golden handle, letting out a small gasp as she saw the inside of the castle.
