"Here," Yushin instructed, pulling the fishing line taught and letting the lure sink down again. "Give it a few bobs like that every now and then. You can let it bounce off the bottom, but don't leave it there," he explained with a comforting smile. Since they'd left the lavalands, Kibasha had watched the hardened man return to someone she could relate to again, someone with whom she still felt a connection, and perhaps even someone who'd take the time to do something like this—teach her and her sister to fish.

"Okay," Kibasha nodded, testing the makeshift pole as she got the feel for the line. Neither she nor Rita had ever once gone fishing. There was a lake moderately near their home town, yes, but the girls had always stayed close to the city even on their most daring adventures. The lake was far out of reach. And neither of their mothers knew how to fish, so why would they? Well. Maybe now it would be a valuable skill to gain.

Kibasha let out a little giggle as Rita shook her paw off, wet from the slap of seaweed she'd just pulled in.

"I thought it was a fish," she sighed, but broke into a smile herself as she tossed the soggy leaf at her sister.

"Ah, gross!" Kibasha laughed, tossing the blueish-red seaweed back into the cove. It slowly drifted along the gentle waves that caressed the shore by their feet.

"Easy, girls," Yushin chuckled, settling in with his own pole and honing in immediately. He'd done this before. If what he said was true, and Kibasha was sure it was, he had been fishing for food for years, and it sounded like he was pretty good. At least, he seemed pretty invested in it. Studying his posture, Kibasha moved to imitate him.

He looked over, grinned, and then returned his eyes to the water. Without really thinking about it, Kibasha's eyes turned instead to the end of Yushin's line. She watched him bob it gently, giving perfectly timed pulls and letting it fall just so far. Honestly, she wasn't sure how to know if it was on the bottom, even though he said she would. She tried jerking her line a bit, but even her inexperienced eyes could see whatever she was doing was nothing like Yushin.

"Keep trying," he chuckled, and she returned his challenge with a confident grin.

"I'll catch one!" she insisted. But as her eyes returned to the end of her line, she tried to imagine… what that would even be like.

Just as she was zoning in, she heard a flurry of splashes, Yushin's laugh, and when she looked over he was holding high a gleaming yellow trophy, glistening in the low light and shimmering brilliantly a myriad of colors as it turned on the end of the line, still flipping and struggling to free itself. He masterfully unhooked it, dropping into the small iron bucket, filled just enough with water to keep their catches alive.

"See? Easy," he teased. Kibasha shifted, zoned in, and waited. Oh yes, she was going to do this. "Easy," she mumbled to herself, the corners of her lips bending into an energized grin.

The misshapen adventures of Nadia and Avery


Avery's stomach growled for the umpteenth time and she groaned as she fell back calling out to Nadia, "When are you gonna get a bite?! '

Nadia's eye twitched as she heard Avery complain for the umpteenth time. She'd been sitting by the water with a line in it trying to get a bite. They were both starving, having their jam get eaten in the forest had depleted their food supply. And Nadia had been giving her ration's to her daughter. Still they were out of food and Nadia had elected to trying her hand at fishing. She growled as she turned her head towards her over dramatic daughter, snapping at her, "Well you were the one who wanted to follow the stupid evil and get us into this mess, so stop complaining, I'm trying to catch something and fishing requires silence, so SHUSH!"

As she turned back something caught her eye, and she stopped, it was a fin. And then she felt a tug on her line. She smiled as she started to reel the fish in slowly before it tugged again, this time harder. She frowned as she strained to pull it in. It seems that there was a tug of war and Nadia was going to win, one way or another.

And someone did win....It just wasn't Nadia. She gasped as the line tugged again, hard enough to pull her into the water.

Avery gasped as her mother went into the water, before quickly running to the bank and calling out, searching for her, "Mom?! Mom?! Where are you?"

Nadia opened her eyes as her head breached the surface of the water. Spluttering and coughing, the fishing rod still in her hand and a fish flopping on her head. She shrieked as she hit it off her head. The fish landing on the bank as Avery stood there shocked before she burst out laughing, falling to the ground, clutching her stomach.

Nadia growled as she pushed herself up onto the bank, soaking wet. It seemed even though Nadia didn't win the battle she won the war as she smirked at the fish still on the bank.

pip woke up from their nap inside of the comfortable den with a rumbling stomach. " ugh, " they groaned, searching desperately through their bag. after looking for a while, they came to the conclusion that they had absolutely nothing edible. gems, water canteens, and... where did that come from? pip pulled out a fishing rod, unsure of how it even fit in their bag. " oh, i remember! " pip laughed, remembering perfectly where the fishing rod came from. while in the forest, pip had come across a kalon who wanted to travel with them. at first, they were unsure if they should allow him to, but after he offered the only thing he had with him, pip could tell how much he wanted to come along. the one thing that the kalon had with him happened to be a fishing rod, and pip thought it might come in handy in the future. pip allowed the mysterious kalon to travel with them, but soon he decided to return to his home in the forest, leaving pip with his fishing rod that they could now use for food.

" this'll be perfect! " pip said excitedly, running out to the river which was in front of the den. they peered in it, seeing lots of fish swimming back and forth. pip had never used a fishing rod before, and they weren't sure how good they'd be at it. they looked at it curiously, deciding to just throw in the line and see what happened. pip sat down near the edge of the river, holding on tightly to their precious fishing rod. after a while of sitting and being bored, pip took it out of the water, unsure of what they were doing it wrong. it was probably because pip had no bait, but hopefully one would just come to the hook. pip threw it back in, sighing. they wished they had some company, somebody to talk to because they could tell that this would take a while. pip crossed their fingers, hoping that a fish would come along sooner than later.

rudy's whole face lit up at the idea of fishing. "i love catching fish! me and my dad and my brother used to fish all the time as little kids. they didn't have time when we got older, but i still know how." he grabbed the fishing rod the group had found- it was a little old and dusty, but rudy was sure he could catch them dinner.
palmer shrugged. "i highly doubt there's a lot of fish in there, but you do you, my man." he and venita both parted ways, doing their things for the day- palmer was already looking for the crystal, and venita had decided to help out lilith. which left rudy alone.
well, he wasn't entirely alone. marigold and chrys, the gremlin and the dragon that he was proud to call his companions, were always by his side. thank god they got along. chrys walked along to the edge of the water next to him, mari sitting on their back.
"alright guys!" rudy exclaimed, sitting down. "let's get us some dinner."

rudy's results weren't very fruitful- unless you counted the work his companions put in. nothing was biting his line- he couldn't find much to use for bait, but it didn't matter. rudy was very quick to give up.
however, his disappointment wavered as he noticed the fish that chrys had pinned underneath their clawed paws. marigold was also grabbing fish from the cove, blending into the shadows and snatching at them with his sharp fingers.
at the end of the day, the two creatures had a pile of fish, which rudy kept situated. he praised the two, petting chrys and giving marigold some of the small crystal shards he liked to eat. the work was done, and while fishing didn't go well for rudy himself, the party wouldn't be hungry tonight.

It was a bit relaxing, really.

Salvia couldn't say she had the most experience with fishing, but she could see why so many people did it. It was sure a lot of time to yourself to gather your thoughts while doing some meaningless arm movements to keep your hands busy. To be honest, she had plenty of snacks still left in her pack- she could probably go a while without catching anything. But hey, it was harmless fun, so why not? Well. Harmless to everyone but the fish. Sorry, fish.

She was in the middle of some deep thought about how people must hurt nature to survive or something when there was a tug on her line. Oh. She hadn't been expecting that, to be honest. She'd been more resting than fishing. Quickly, she went through the techniques for reeling it in. Spin the thingy. Pull. Don't let it get any farther away than it started. Don't let the line get too taught, it might break. It was a laborious process. But, finally, the thing stopped fighting so much and she was able to pull it to land.

Arguably, it was a fish.

The horrendous mashup of many things she had reeled in... did not look edible. There were about ten eyes on it, and three fins with two on one side. It also had a mouth full of teeth that could barely fit inside. She was surprised the thing didn't bit clean through the hook. The whole "fish" was nearly the size of a boot, but every bit of it seemed strangely... spiky, or noxious, or leaky. She doubted she could make any use of it whatsoever.

She sighed, using just two fingers to gently toss it back in the water. Breaking open that next bag of cheetos it was.

Electra opened her satchel and a horrific look painted her face afterwards. She closed the satchel immediately, not wanting Ronan or Artemis to acknowledge their desperate situation. How they let did food reserves get this low? She questioned, mind laced with apprehension. Her stomach tugged, grumbled and growled uncomfortably and she then realised how hungry she actually was herself. She had spotted a few small creatures running around the crystal caves, but decided that catching them would demand too much of her energy and concentration. She couldn't afford to lose energy or focus too hard, as she was incredibly fatigued. Sighing, fearing that all hope was lost and all efforts would be in vain, Electra admitted defeat and drew herself into the cold ground. Moments after, a gentle gurgle came from the sparkling blue waters, followed by a minor splash.

Rising to her aching paws, Electra approached the water curiously. Her stomach roared louder this time. At the waters edge, a fish catapulted high into the air, it's silver scales catching the moonlight, before re-entering the relaxed water. Electra didn't happen to have a fishing line. How could she have foreseen the need for such equipment? She leant over the edge tentatively, which crumbled due to the saturated material and Electra's weight. She placed a paw in the water quickly, randomly aiming and missing by a longshot. She gritted her teeth in frustration and lashed her tail. Withdrawing her paw, her eyes darted between the silver, shimmering shapes under the surface of the water. After numerous attempts of missing and an ever-increasing frustration, Electra opted for a different technique. Hopefully she'd be more successful this time around. Eyes fixated on the water, Electra opened her jaw and closed it on a moving fish in the water, success!

xxxxxas the kalons' food supply dwindled, elle came out with a pseudo-brilliant idea: fishing.
xxxxxthe party was lucky that elle had thought to bring a fishing pole in that oversized backpack of hers. "i like to fish every now and then, you know," she said. "i'm not very good, however... i get impatient." she giggled nervously. "honestly, i thought we'd use this back at that fishing booth with that red kalon. it's surprising that we're only just cracking it out now!"
xxxxx"true, true," said flynn. "okay, so... if you're not the best at this, then i guess i'll give it a shot." the kalon cracked their knuckles.
xxxxxdesiree pouted. "hey, what about me! i wanna catch fish, too!"
xxxxxflynn rolled their eyes. "dez, there's only one rod. besides... i think i've got this."
xxxxxthe dark-coated kalon sat on the side of a pool of water, cross-legged, waiting for a fish to arrive. (they decided to use a bunch of crystal-colored beetles that desiree's pesky weasel companion had been batting around.) flynn sat patiently, trying not to give up hope. there had to be something in the water... right?
xxxxxmeanwhile, desiree was still childishly bumbling around. "flynn never thinks i can handle anything," she grumbled. "well, i'll show 'em!" she picked up bailey, the weasel, and stormed over to a spot several feet away from flynn on the edge of the pool.
xxxxxeagerly, she took out her small staff, and pointed it at the water. desiree tried to remember a spell for levitation. she knew she'd read about one in one of the master's spellbooks. she just needed to think harder...
xxxxx"ooh, something's biting, guys!" said flynn, cheerfully. trying their hardest to make sure the catch didn't get away, the kalon reeled in a single salmon. "ta-da! looks pretty good, huh?"
xxxxxbefore they could brag, however, flynn noticed the gigantic mass of water hovering above the ground. inside, many fish swam around.
xxxxx"told you i was going to catch fish," said desiree, smiling mischievously.
