        word count ;; 309 / 500
-----Every year as the brisk autumn winds start to blow in from the North and the leaves are touched with flame, a local village celebrates the Festival of the Living Dead. During the Festival, memorials are raised for loved ones passed away and the streets are filled with villagers dressed in elaborate masks. Singing, dancing, and feasting is everywhere, and many a child can be found seated around a blazing fire, listening enraptured to tales told by the elders and veterans.
-----One of the most popular and well known tales tells of an ancient Necromancer, locked away for centuries, damned by his own lust for power. Interpretations of this legend vary wildly, but a few common details all versions agree on are the Necromancer's hunger for power, his subsequent fall to madness, and being cast in chains for an eternity to come, cursed by the very thing he desired so intently.
-----Serving as a warning about the dangers of greed and power, the tales of the Necromancer are often used to teach various lessons to the children of the village as well as to entertain some of the older Viscets wanting to hear a good old fashioned scary story. All the tellings end the same way, with very similar iterations on the same sentiment.
-----"No one knows where exactly the Necromancer lies...but rumor has it that during the Festival of the Living Dead, he escapes his bonds and roams the land at night, hunting for lost and naughty children to gobble up! So to all you young'uns, listen to your parents and don't go wandering off at night, or he just might catch ya!"
-----All in good fun to get everyone into the spirit of the season.
-----Not a one had any reason to suspect the legends were true.
----------Much less that it had happened in this very town.

    { • The Festival of the Living Dead ;;
        word count ;; 469
-----The Festival of the Living Dead is a tradition celebrated in Seylam's hometown and was inspired by Halloween, Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, and la Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme also known as the Festival of Near Death Experiences. To some extent Thanksgiving as well, but not so much.
-----Similar to Dia de los Muertos, the Festival of the Living Dead celebrates the lives of those who have died. Elaborate memorials are set up for deceased loved ones and are decorated with traditional Festival decorations as well as items the deceased held dear, also usually accompanied by a plaque or letter describing their life as well as a fond farewell letter from the family.
-----Similar to both Dia de los Muertos and Halloween, during the Festival Viscets will wear masks and on rare occasions full costumes, usually consisting of a cloak and a few other additions. These masks can be anything from a plain white mask to a super detailed, painted, and fully jeweled and feathered headdress. The masks are created by the Viscet wearing it and are meant to be a reflection of that Viscet's personality, character, and interests, though can also be modeled after various stories, legends, and animals.
-----Story telling is an incredibly important tradition to the townsfolk here, and the Festival is no exception. During the Festival, Viscets will tell stories about anything from true stories to famous ancestral legends. Like the name of the Festival implies, some of the most popular story topics are true stories about nearly fatal injuries and out of body experiences, some slightly stretched tall tales about the dead rising up and ghost sightings, and downright terrifying legends detailing the lives of Viscets who died but returned from the dead to haunt the living, or even Viscets who can raise the dead.
-----Every night of the Festival is concluded with a feast, usually a huge town gathering where everyone contributes something. Accompanied by stories, drinking, dancing, song, and games, the feasts are intended to celebrate and honor the lives of those past and to be thankful for the life you have left. Though many of the stories talk about the afterlife or the undead, many repeat the theme that your life on this mortal plane is brief and to not throw it away.
-----While the adults talk amongst themselves, the Visclings entertain themselves with a variety of games. Everything from wood carving to face and mask painting to scavenger hunts, the children are always busy with something. Oftentimes sweets are one of the rewards for the contests or are hidden as scavenger hunt items. Many of the adults do carry some sweets with them as well, and will hold miniature competitions to see which Viscling can "scare" them the most with their mask and routine.

        word count ;; 636 / 1000
-----Seylam felt the cold autumn wind ruffling his fur, and he opened his eyes to the warm light of the rising sun. It was the third day of the Festival of the Living Dead, and despite the early hour, many Viscets were already up and about. He could see clusters of Viscets gathered around talking cheerfully with each other while every so often a group of Visclings would come bursting around the corner, running up and down the streets. As much as he would love to join in the festivities again, this year he was working on an important project.
-----Ever since he was young, he'd been absolutely fascinated by the tales of dead Viscets rising to roam the land again and of the hushed tales of Viscets who could control life and death. He knew the stories by heart, and would always listen with bated breath as the elder Viscets retold them in dramatic whispers year after year. Though he knew most of them were simply legends or tall tales, Seylam couldn't ignore the hope in him that these stories were true and the dead could be brought back.
-----Seylam didn't fear death. Rather, he was intrigued yet respectful of it. He wasn't afraid of dying himself, and wasn't afraid of his family and friends dying either, since he knew that death wasn't the end of the line.
-----No, what drove his curiosity wasn't fear, but rather regret.
-----Seylam's older brother had died several years prior in an incident that Seylam couldn't help but believe was his own fault.
-----Seylam had found a cave at the base of the mountains in the heart of the forest near their village and had wanted desperately to explore them. His brother decided to go with him, since clearly no one would be able to stop Seylam and it would be better he had someone with him to protect him.
-----While they were exploring, they came across an unstable section of tunnel and got caught in a rockfall. Seylam made it out alive, but only because his brother had sacrificed himself to push him out of danger.
-----The accident in the caves haunted Seylam to this day, and his biggest regret was that he hadn't had the chance to speak with his brother one last time. The following Festival, something in one of the stories caught his interest more so than usual and ignited a spark of hope in him that something could be done. Since then, Seylam had devoted himself tirelessly to studying necromancy to the point of obsession. So much so in fact that he'd become asocial and rarely socialized anymore except when absolutely necessary.
-----His obsession had spiraled out of control to the point where he would go out into the woods, searching for the corpse of a recently dead squirrel or bird to try to experiment on to get any sort of reaction. He'd heard some of the Viscets whisper behind his back, saying he'd gone mad since his brother had died, and he noticed that many began avidly avoiding direct eye contact with him.
-----They though he was mad, but they just didn't understand.
-----But none of that mattered anymore.
-----Last night he'd found the answer. He found the solution. Now all he had left to do was put it in motion.
-----He'd just find his brother's corpse, talk to him one last time and apologize for what he'd done, and then move on. Leave this whole thing behind him.
----------Seylam took a deep breath of the morning air, letting the chill fill his lungs. A slight smile touched his lips and a shine of burning determination appeared in his eyes as he started off in the direction of the cave. The first fateful step in a journey that would change his life forever.

what are their Halloween traditions?
Azazel has several Halloween traditions! One of his favorites is pumpkin carving. He enjoys pumpkin carving because he loves the smell of pumpkins, and he loves the slimy feeling of the insides! Another favorite Halloween tradition of this boy would be going to haunted houses. He goes to haunted house every year for Halloween! One time, he got so scared that he accidentally knocked someone over trying to get away from the monsters. He apologized and helped them up after realising what he had done. While those are some of his favorites, nothing compares to Halloween night. On Halloween night, he sits in costume, giving out candy to trick-or-treaters, and after everyone has finished trick-or-treating everyone heads down to the old barn where there is a bonfire, dinner, games, and a Tim Burton movie played on a projector and a white sheet. Nothing makes him happier than spending time with children in costumes, while enjoying leisurely activities with all of the people in his neighbourhood!

extras:

Pumpkin Carving
When Azazel was just a young viscling, he had carved his pumpkin all by himself for the very first time. He was super proud of himself! After putting a candle in it and taking some pictures with it; he decided he wanted to put it outside on display. Excited to see what people thought about his pumpkin, he went to sleep early. When he awoke the next morning, his heart broke when he checked on his pumpkin. Someone had smashed it in the middle of the night. With a heavy heart he trudged through the house. His owner felt bad that his pumpkin was smashed. She made some phone calls and later that day she told him to get in the car because they were going on am adventure. The young Azazel didn't really want to go, but reluctantly agreed anyway. The woman took him to a blacksmith. After showing the blacksmith a picture, the blacksmith got to work. It was a bit loud for the viscling, but still he was intrigued. After the blacksmith had finished the piece, he showed it to Azazel. Azazel had never been more excited! He was excited when he went home with an indestructible replica of his pumpkin. He later put it on display. The next day everyone in the neighbourhood asked about his pumpkin. He told them all about what had happened and how he had gotten to experience a blacksmith shop, and how the blacksmith made the pumpkin for him as a gift. Everyone in the town was mesmerised by the metal pumpkin. Now you may think that pumpkin smashing increased so that more people could get replicas of their pumpkins, but in fact it had the opposite effect! Pumpkin smashing had come to an end completely in his neighbor hood. Every year people tell his story to their children, and they often times give him fanart of his pumpkin. Other people carve their pumpkins to look similar to his. Azazel has become more appreciative of others and their feeling because of this event. (344/500)

what are their Halloween traditions? Every year on Halloween, he goes camping with his friends and they tell each other ghost stories, while roasting marshmallows over the campfire. Each camping trip, they all bring one of their favorite horror movies and the group watches all of them that week, and then they all go home scared out of their minds. It's a simple tradition, but he loves scaring himself and his friends and camping is tons of fun, especially with those he loves the most
