All was silent as always within the forest, as dark as night. The trees towered overhead, preventing little to no light to shine through...perfect for beasts of the darkness, the shadows.
All except one, a single wolf - small, with pointed ears, a long tail...and almost lifeless eyes as she stared at her surroundings, the slight glow welcomed by the trees and plants.
There's nothing here for me.
But yet she continued on her path - one she had seemingly walked many times...as if she was nothing.
I am nothing.
...she had to be something, right?
The wolf came to another stop, a scowl on her face. "Don't play mind games with me."
But we aren't deary.
We may be old fools but we never lie.
Only the cold, hard truth.

With a snarl she turned her head, glaring at the glowing lamps on her tail. Three of them, glowing the same amount...
They were mocking her.
"How dare you, you know nothing!" She snapped, her eyes narrowing as the wispy laughter entered her mind.
But we do, dear Mara.
You're just like us...forgotten and all alone...a nobody.
"Don't call me that...don't use that name." She growled lowly, before stalking off into the night. But no matter how far she walked...these lanterns would remain.
Why even bother...its not like there is something out here for you...like something cares.
She chose to ignore it, hoping that something, someone...would come and help her...save her, even.
...
...
...
But nobody came.

"Why am I stuck with you?"
Be cause we are your present.
Your past.
And your future-
"But why me!" Alohomora snapped. "Why not someone else...at least someone."
For once, the young wolf heard no reply, as if for once they had left her to her own thoughts.
This is for your own sake...the sake of your family, of this place.
"You're preventing me from leaving?" Mara questioned. "Preventing me from finding my family-"
It is not that we want to.
No, we could do this in a much more simple way...
But seeing your frustrated is so much fun!
She rolled her eyes at the voices. "If only I could rip you off...my life would be much better."
But you know what would happen with that dear.
"I would befall the spell, I wouldn't be myself anymore...but maybe it is for the better. Maybe it is time I hand myself off to someone else."

And be left like us? In lanterns?
All but a whispering voice inside the head of the innocence?
Driving them to madness? Insanity?

"But what if I could be different...what if I could help them?" Alohomora murmured quietly, coming to a quick stop as there was a brief screeching in her ears.
Do you not understand? You cannot do that!"
"And why not...this is my body!"
Not only yours...ours, we all belonged in that body, at some point. And once you give up...another will replace you, left to wander these dark trees forever, never to see the light...to look more lifeless every day, to give up hope.
Mara sighed, and for once, flicked her ears back. "Maybe you're right, I cannot help, I cannot become different...but maybe I can be free, free to be who I want...to become a better me, to direct the next me on a different path." She said.

"To give them hopes, to help them dream...to have them one day, inspire others. Inspire others to fight through whatever battle they have...because it is worth it. I want my better self to do the same."
