The wind whispered through the trees, slowly dragging fog on its wings. Grant stood still in the
coming dawn, the sky was grey, with hints of blue on the horizon. He sighed to himself in the calm.
But he heard a noise, quiet and melodic. he turned his head to where it came from, and followed,
softly. His hooves came down, one after each other, barely stirring the ground beneath him. The
very trees seemed to move out of his way, if you didn't look closely. He plodded on, looking for
whatever made the sound. As the sound grew louder so did the song of a river. Whatever was there
sat by its edge. He saw a small thing with four limbs, sitting upright on a rock. It hummed to its self
and Grant had the sudden realization that he knew what it was. It was a human colt, the young
creature must have strayed from its mother. Grant wasn't sure what to do. He knew humans were
a thing to be feared, but he had never seen one before, and surely this one needed help. He
nickered to the human and it turned its head, eyes widening. "You are real," she whispered. She
stood and walked towards him. Grant backed away and the small child stopped. She sat down,
staring at him. "I'm not going to hurt you," she said. Although he didn't trust her, he believed her
words, and lay down to get a better look at the human. He extended his neck to smell her hand,
which was raised to him. She smelled of other humans, smoke, paper, and meat. He knew the scent.
In recent years the humans had gotten curious about his kind and came in large groups. They brought
with them food and fire, paper being a word he had learned earlier while once examining a group.
Her parents must have brought her along on an exploration, he decided. Just then he felt something
touch his nose, bringing him back out of thought. He flinched, but the small hand stayed on his velvety
nose. "Your soft," she said, her voice quiet. She inched forward, getting closer to the large creature.
Grant stayed quiet, watching her with practiced stiffness. She began to talk to him, stroking his
nose, or legs. She spoke of many things; how she had been out all night looking for him, how most
of the adults thought he wasn't really, how they kept mentioning that perhaps they were just looking
for wild geese. Then her thoughts traveled to a further place, speaking of something called school,
of what she'd tell her friends when she got back, how surprised her grandfather would be that
she had met the creature before her. But then after a while her words drifted off. Grant noticed that
the child was exhausted, probably due to being awake all night, something she clearly was not capable
of doing with ease. But then, she began to cry. Grant breathed in her face, trying to tell what was
wrong. She wrapped her arms around his nose, then let go. "I don't know how to get home," she
said between sobs. "And, I'm so tired. I just wanna go home." Grant looked to the horizon, along with
the ever brightening sky, he saw smoke. He knew humans would be there, whether or not they were
her's. He shoved his nose under her arms, forcing her to stand. He nudged her over to his back. The
girl looked confused, but understood and got on. He felt her clutch a handful of his mane, so he
stood. He waited for her weight to shift back into balance, then started off towards the smoke.
Grant could feel her getting heavier and figured she had drifted into sleep. But, her grip never
changed in his hair, so he continued. The trek down hill was tough with the added weight on his
back, he felt clumsy instead of graceful, nearly slipping on rocks twice, but he made progress.
The sun had still not risen by the time he reached the human camp, though he heard them far
before he arrived. They were all yelling the same thing over and over again, some far from the
camp. He figured it was her name, but names meant little to a creature that lasted as long as
he. He twisted his neck around, nudging the girl's shoe with his nose. He felt her move about on
his back as she sat up. "Where are we," she said, with a yawn. The call sounded again the girl
nearly jumped in surprise, "you brought me back?" Grant let out a soft huff and lay back down,
carefully. The girl climbed off and wrapped her arms around his nose again. "Thank you," she
said. "Wait right here, I want my Mom to meet you!" She then ran off toward the camp. But Grant
knew his place in the world, and that place was to be heard, but never seen. He had already
stumbled beyond his comfortable boundaries, and he would not go any further. So he stood and
turned, his grace restored, and left back up the mountain.
