Alistair sat upon his throne, overlooking the kingdom that once was. His face stained with soot and blood, both of his subjects and enemies. The marbled floors of the castle almost identical to his own face; caked in ruble and dry blood. Portraits that once displayed his heritage had been subjected to the flame, and left burned as nothing more than tatters on the ground. All that remained were charred picture frames that once held the intricate oil paintings. Though as his kingdom decayed, there was still use to be found. Hope that lay glimmering, just barely noticeable under the fallen debris. In his eyes, his kingdom was still functional, full of life that used to thrive off of the land. It could be rebuilt, rejuvenated - as though nothing had ever warped the once beautiful land.
Alistair was a peaceful man - always one to extend a kind hand to his subjects and cheerfully humble others. Although something inside of him had changed, snapped even, when a war had broke out between the four districts that ruled over the land. It was a war lead by greed and envy, fueled by the need for ever growing power. While Alistair ruled an honest kingdom, the ideals of the war had become too much to ward off, and he became enveloped in something more than he could handle. No longer was he the courteous king his subjects would once believe him to be. Unrecognizable by any friend or foe, he was a changed man, disturbed by war. A mere shell of his former being - his complexion hardly replicating what he once was.
It seemed as though the columns were the only structure still standing strong. A sheer miracle considering the chaos that ensued not long ago. How long ago had it been exactly? The days went uncounted, no organization to be found in a kingdom stripped of such unity. As though on queue, light filtered in through the crumbling stone of the once standing castle walls, illuminating a pathway of ruble laid like carpet for the now lonely king. Standing from his worn throne, Alistair walked the path he had left for himself, grey eyes absorbing all that had been done.
Banners hung with slogans to be read only by the dust-laden wind, and the city market, just visible beyond those ruined walls, had been set up as though it awaits the stall holders any moment. It was a wonder as to how the market still stood, untouched and unchanging. The only sound to resonate through the empty city, was that of the blackbird. Its cries an attempt to bring back the people who left tasty scraps, if only it called loud enough.
Everyone had left, not a single soul remained in the abandoned kingdom, nobody but Alistair. Those who did not perish were chased out, Alistair refusing to leave his post. He had left himself to be the only one who could see the glimmer of hope that shone so desperately beneath the debris. Of course, only he could rewrite these wrongs, and only he would listen to the saddening cries of the blackbird.
