The reason for this is quite simple: it mesmerizes him. When Morsee stares into the center of one of the blooms under the moonlight, it makes him think about things he wouldn't normally think about. True, most of the things he thinks about at these times aren't usually very intelligent and make him seem rather dull, but really he is quite smart and just immensly curious. This flower helps him to regain the child-like imagination and mind-set that most adults lose once they outgrow their foalhood.
