Large, meat-eating beasts, Lost River Perytons posses the forelimbs, body, and head of a deer and the hind of a bird. They work as pack hunters, and are incredibly dangerous to meet outside of a controlled setting. Perytons communicate with eerie clicks, whistles, and croons, and cast the shadow of a man up until they kill a human. Males tend to have full, branching antlers, while females have single, spike antlers. Both sexes posses razor sharp tines and colorful eyes.
Perytons are tameable, and that trait is what has allowed the breed to persist for so long. In the 1940s, Perytons were sought out and killed to near extinction, but thanks to a small niche of breeders, they were able to come back. Perytons are still endangered in the wild, but thrive in captivity.
Before the attempt to tame even a domestic born Peryton is allowed, the Peryton must kill a person at least once in their lifetime. Upon doing so, their shadow will resemble their true form. Thankfully, the old practice of allowing them to kill people has long since been abandoned and Perytons, while intelligent, are able to be tricked into thinking they’ve done so, rendering them safe to tame and approach.
Perytons bond to one rider only in their lifetime, but riders should still exercise extreme caution around the beasts. One rider can bond to multiple Perytons, and it’s encouraged that they do, as Perytons are better kept in herds.
