This Friesian is black or grey (depending on how the marking is interpreted if accepted into the species) monarch butterfly marked
This marking features patterning similar to the wings of a monarch butterfly that extend over the back, with dark legs and light spotting on the darkest areas. A dark stripe over the nose, forehead and ears also has this white spotting. The mane is often dark with lighter streaks through it.
This marking can be interpreted in one of two ways, with black as the base, and the grey patches are the black being lightened, OR the grey is the base with the black parts are the parts being darkened

This is an example of how the application of these markings can be interpreted. With the left showing a lightening of the base coat, and the right showing the darkening. (both with a chestnut base)
