Oisin's story

Oisin was a young, lusty fable with an indomitable curiosity and an unquenchable thirst for power. He lived at the time when there were only five herds, the First Five, and the Swamp was most beautiful then ever. The whole area was covered in lush vegetation whose roots penetrated the soft, marshy soil. Under the guidance and protection of the wise Swamp Herd, terrestrial and aquatic animals and creatures were beginning to live together again. However, the powers granted to the first fables, which had been necessary to keep the peace, were not well understood by those born after the war had ended, when the bloodshed had ceased and the waters had become clear again. One of these was Oisin. He was a third-generation fable who had known nothing but peace. To him — and he was not the only one — it made no sense to have all that power and not use it. These young fables wanted to shape the world, control it and improve it. Well, yes. Destroying was never their intention. Created for peace, these young fables, unsuspecting victims of their own inexperience, believed they could perfect something that was already wonderful. And not only that. Power, brings arrogance, so much so that they believed they were the only ones who could dominate life and death. In their eyes, the elders were inert: they had merely repaired something broken instead of creating a new, better world.

One might wonder who was to blame for what happened. Was it only the ambitious and arrogant young fables, or is some of the blame also due to those who have been in the world the longest and have taken values and feelings for granted? But that does not matter, because whatever happened, it happened. Oisin was walking alone in the Swamp when he saw the Elder fable dozing under a leafy tree. Next to her was the amulet: a beautiful, amber-coloured stone, brimming with power. Energy had been stored in the stone for decades, ever since the first fable of the Swamp was created. It was a safeguard in case the powerful Ancients started a new war. Together with those kept by the other four herds, it was hoped that the power accumulated in them over time would be enough to calm the Ancients' tempers and prevent new bloodshed. It was a powerful item. And wonderful. And Oisin wanted it for himself. With it, he could have reshaped the world according to his vision, eliminating pain, anger, suffering, and all things negative once and for all. Slowly, he approached the elderly fable and, without her noticing, took the amulet.

Dear reader, you may now be wondering why the Herd elder left the amulet unattended. Instead, I invite you to ask the opposite question: why would anyone take it? Who could have been interested in stealing and destroying a source of power that could have saved them all in the event of a new war? However, as I said, the elders were perhaps too focused on the past and had forgotten to consider the future.

Oisin took possession of the amulet and began running towards the northern part of the Swamp until he reached the sea. He ran tirelessly for days, sustained by the amulet's power. When he reached the sea, he stopped. This was the right place to accomplish his purpose: he would alter the texture of the world and eliminate evil, leaving only goodness. However, being young and careless, how could he distinguish between good and evil? He cast his spell, but something went wrong. Or rather, everything went according to plan — unfortunately, however, things were not as clear as they should have been. In an attempt to remove the evil, Oisin removed the goodness too. After all, everything that could originate evil could also give birth to good. And so, death began to spread, unstoppable. Caught up in a whirlwind of power, Oisin did not notice anything; indeed, the more death spread, the more powerful he became. He liked this feeling. It was only a matter of time before he began to feel the destruction he was causing. He did not care. It was the right thing to do, and the more the warm embrace of power enveloped him, the less he cared.

Then, just as it had begun, everything stopped. Power flowed out of his body and a vortex of air formed around him. A large wave swept over him from the sea. He lifted his gaze to see fiery red swirls, scales and long, bristling aquamarine fur. It was the Dragon. A roar came from the sea. A monstrous creature rose from the waters. It was the Leviathan. Oisin did not understand. Had they stopped him? Why? A moment later, all was gone. Only the void remained around him, while back in Draeridia, where the Swamp had once been lush and green, the Deadwood now rose.
