They sit in accounts owned by people who have no plans to return gathering dust. It’s not very fair to newer users who see these gorgeous pets in the archive and desperately want one.
I support the whole sending an email to check if they still intend to return because sometimes people forget their passwords/emails or they simply dont think to give the pets to active people who would want them. Maybe something happened to them and they’re no longer even around which is a sad thought, but they would probably want the pets to go to people.
I say send an email after two years of inactivity. If there is no response within a few months, assume they’re perma-inactive and move the pets to the pound. Maybe even send one more email beforehand just in case they missed the first.
It’s not punishing them if they are given plenty of notice beforehand. It just makes sure that certain pets stay in circulation. If they return late and are upset, it’s their fault for not checking in like they were asked to. The site could even have a warning upon signup stating that this could happen so it isn’t a sudden shock to people.
maybe this could be a condition for new accounts created going forward, but it’s unfair to the members who signed up for CS not knowing their accounts had the risk of being deleted. I took a two year hiatus almost from CS and don’t use the email I signed up with anymore, so my account could have easily been deleted and I would have had no idea, even tho I intended to come back when I had time. Unfortunately, life after high school is very consuming.
The problem with that though is that it doesn’t solve the current pet issue. That was the main reasoning behind suggesting it. There would most likely be an announcement post on the first page and maybe even send some emails out to let everyone know about the new change
A couple years back, I was exploring CS and I came across the Members List. At the time, it was formatted so there was a long, long list of every single player (active or not). Naturally, I combed through all the older members pets. I was
stunned. I saw hundreds of list pets in open groups collecting dust. I was green with envy.
However, that was several years ago. Since then, I’ve taken numerous hiatuses. I’ve come back every single time.
Now, the chances of someone returning after a decade of inactivity is highly unlikely. But let’s imagine for the moment someone does. Except, they come back to discover that their entire account has been
ransacked. Pets that they cherished - loved - are gone. All because other users felt more entitled to them. That because they weren’t using them, they didn’t deserve them. Whether the member spent five minutes or five years playing, those pets still belong to them. Y’all are literally talking about theft.
This is the equivalent of breaking into someone’s house and stealing everything of value because the owner “wasn’t using it.”
It’s not just morally wrong, it’s greedy. Guys, these are virtual pets. I recognize that climbing the List Ladder is difficult. Getting your dreamie is difficult. As years pass, it’ll gradually become more tedious to get pets. But like every game, it has to be hard. If it was easy, no one would play.
