Kalon name: Tia
Animal that represents this kalon: Orchard Mason Bee
Why? (250 words max): They are solitary, hard working bees, just like this kalon, except they aren't a bee. They forage on fruit blooms, which just makes sense for this kalon that consumes blooms for sustenance. Who says you can't have a quirky appetite? No honey, no hive. This kalon is a wanderer, settling down in the toughest of places without a real place to call home. And they like it that way. Docile and not at all aggressive, just like Tia. Don't ask her to finish a fight- she WILL run away.

Kalon name: Sylphie
Animal that represents this kalon: Viceroy Butterfly
Why? (250 words max):
“Butterflies represent the concept of change. Transformation. Metamorphosis. A concept I’ve always been fascinated with. Everyone contains the potential for change. It's woven deep into the fibres of our existence. Our very souls.
But… change isn’t easy. It isn’t always beautiful. Sometimes, it can be disastrous - a crumpled wing. Missing legs. Or worse… even complete liquefaction. Honestly, it… kind of terrifies me. What will happen when I emerge from my chrysalis? Will I be bright and beautiful like the rest of them, or will I be nothing more than blackened sludge?
Will I be like this forever? Terrified to show my true colours? Languishing inside my own chrysalis until I disappear? No, I… I don’t think so. But even if I do emerge, I’m… not even a monarch. I’m a viceroy. A humble imitation of those around me.
Will they ever notice? Or will I blend into their coppery hues, forever an imposter in their midst? If they do notice, will they turn on me? Will they migrate away, as monarchs do? Will they come back?
…do I care if they come back? I’m… not really one of them. The bold black line across my hindwings will always remind me of that. I’m smaller; clumsier. I can’t defend myself like they can. But… I don’t want to be alone. Why shouldn’t I be social, just like the monarchs? Adult viceroys are social… right?
So… I’ll fake a smile. A laugh. I’ll fake it all, if it means they’ll never leave.”

Kalon name: Ruoshi
Animal that represents this kalon: Marine Hatchetfish
Why? (250 words max):
Hatchetfish are tiny deep-sea fish with deep bodies and delicate silver scales. They are best-known for being devoured by larger predators. Most never paid them a second thought: simple, weak creatures, with a foolish and fatal attraction to the light. Icarus as a feeder fish. But Ruoshi had always wondered what Icarus’ crime was: why did he deserve despair, and the hatchetfish disdain? What was so wrong about ambition, in loving that world beyond your reach? Was it not the nature of the plain and weak to strive for more?
In the depths of the aquarium Ruoshi sits by the tank, his tail curled meekly around his chair. He looks at the faint light emanating from the corridor, holds his breath and allows the whisper of the machinery from high above to reach his ears, threading with the soft pulse of his heart. And then he turns his eyes to the tank, to the hatchetfish, small, delicate, shining, like flakes of glass that could shatter at a touch.
“How foolish,” the others say, “how strange. To swim so eagerly to one’s own doom.” But Ruoshi understands. To wish for something more, even if you cannot have it. To swim toward the angler’s lure, to fly close to the sun. Ruoshi didn’t think it was pitiable. He who swims toward the light, even if it kills him, will at least have tried to go beyond. To him, a hatchetfish isn’t a symbol of foolishness; it is of hope.
