The tip of the Director’s cigarette flared, glimmering orange, like a star. She let out a breath, the smoke rising in scrolls of soft grey. Xinmi tried not to wrinkle her nose. “A surgeon’s most important tools are her hands,” the Director began, voice soft and deep. “And yours are nimble indeed, I hear.”

Xinmi lifted her hands to rest on the desk. That’s why she was here. “Only because I am still small.”

The Director raised her eyebrow. “Age won’t ruin your hands, young one. Neglect will, and damaged hands never fully heal.” She spoke with a faint bitterness. “To greet them at the cradle and bid them farewell at the grave: a surgeon’s path is long,” she recited, then waited expectantly.

“I don’t believe in gods.” Xinmi lifted her chin defiantly. “My hands are my own.”

“Heh.” Surprisingly, the Director let out a huff of laughter. “Be as it may, the people will expect it. Better get into the habit, or else you’ll forget.”

Xinmi set her jaw, and said nothing.

After a brief silence, the Director shrugged, and rose from her seat. Xinmi watched as she opened the door, the guards outside each inclining their heads. Respect—deference—followed her like a cloak mantled about her shoulders.

Xinmi would be just like her one day. She took a deep breath, bitter smoke filling her lungs. If that’s what it took, then… “Gods above and below grant you patience, Director.”

Ahead, the Director paused, glanced over her shoulder, and smiled.

“Eclette, o Princess Eclette! What is your decree?” Cried out another kalon from the bottom of the rock climbing wall.

At the very top sat Eclette, adorned in ruby red ribbons that laid beautifully against her head. She was the princess (of the playground) and all the other kids loved to flock to her side. She didn’t know how it began, but as soon as it started, she couldn’t say she wanted it to end. Even being a pretend princess had its perks after all.

Instead of being overlooked all the time, the other kids actually seemed interested in what she had to say.

For so long she had been alone, overshadowed, and even ignored. But right now she was the princess, a beloved ruler whose word was received with eagerness instead of reluctant compliance.

“My decree is for everyone to gather the prettiest rock they can find! Whoever finds the best rock will get to be my royal advisor, and sit with me up on the great wall!” And with those simple words, they all scrambled to complete the task. Seeing so many people rush to find the best thing, even if it was something as menial as a rock that could be found all over the playground, was exciting…

In time, she had learned what true respect felt like. She stood tall with pride and authority, for she had finally achieved everything she had aspired to, praise, honor, and admiration. She would enjoy this moment, until next playtime.
