Just saw this pretty boy! <3 Marking for entry, naming him Zenji
MEETING
249 words
Reindeer sat quietly, pen in hand as she jotted down note after note about the stallion pacing in the pen before her. Everything about him astounded her, from his breathtaking rack to the runic markings scattered along his legs. She'd been sitting there observing him for hours, just journaling about the beautiful beast. In that time, he'd changed his demeanor; at first he was standoffish, even a bit aggressive as he snorted and pawed at the ground, both threatened and offended by the two legged creature. However, now he stood, calm and quiet as he grazed, one ear flicked towards Reindeer as he, too, observed her, having long ago deemed her not a threat. Reindeer paused in her writing, her eyes resting on the arctic draft, her face quizzical as she mulled over things in her mind. After a moment, she gave a brief nod to herself as she stood, slowly as to not frighten the horse, though it still caught his attention. No longer was it a single ear in her direction, he had lifted and turned his entire head to watch her, both cautious and curious of the unexpected change. She slid her hand into her bag and pulled out sugar cubes, showing them to him before extending her flat hand for him, the sweet treat resting in her palm. He sniffed at it for only a moment before quickly devouring it, giving a happy nicker that earned a smile from the woman. Fast friends, it seems.
TRAINING
337 Words
Reindeer stood in the center of the round pen, holding her training flag pole, Zenji the arctic draft lazily trotting alongside the fence, doing laps around her. She wiggled the flag behind him a little, encouraging him to speed up to which he complied, devoting more of his attention to Reindeer as he quickened his pace. While usually Reindeer would allow Zenji to be a bit lazy, Zenji didn't know it yet, but today was going to be a different type of training, so she needed him in a proper 'working' headspace. Some cantering later and Reindeer felt it was time. She fed him a carrot, which he gratefully accepted, before she slipped away, disappearing into the barn. Zenji stood, watching, waiting, unsure of how he felt about being left in the round pen. He waited for what felt like an eternity but was certainly no more than ten minutes before she returned, carrying what was now to be /his/ tack. She cooed sweet words to him as she showed Zenji the pulling harness. He was too small for her to ride, so instead she opted for pulling. Once Zenji no longer seemed interested, or frightened by the harness, she began to slowly, cautiously, dress him in his new harness. Once done, she praised him, stroking the stallion as she spoke sweet words to him while feeding him apple cubes. After their moment of celebration, Reindeer clipped a lead rope to his halter and led him to the barn where a sled awaited. She made quick work of hooking it up to his harness, while he curiously observed what she was doing. Once it was fully secured, Reindeer got out her training flag and began to wiggle it behind him, encouraging him to move. Zenji did so, for a moment, before pausing at the resistance he felt behind him. Reindeer wiggled her flag again, speaking words of encouragement, and Zenji surged forward, first at a walk then a trot as he pulled the empty sled behind him.
