Buttermilk #E223

Postby Black.Wings » Thu Jun 26, 2025 11:26 am

Here she finally is, my entry for the 2025 staff litter. She almost stayed in my drafts to be mine forever lol

To win her:
Choose another Buttermilk to be her friend and tell me all about their friendship. In 1000 words or less.
Is it new or have they been friends forever? Are they just friends or is it more than that? Do they talk everyday? I want to know everything.
If you don’t own any Buttermilk yet you can use anyone in my barn to be her friend!

Prompt:

Kilua has always been one to wander, exploring every crack and crevice of her homeland and never staying in one place for too long. To her, there were too many novel experiences she just had to have to settle down- sure, maybe in the future she'd find somewhere to finally plant her roots, but never so soon!

Until she met Asra.

When Kilua found out that a cat cafe had opened in Portia, she had to see it for herself. Portia is a sleepy little town filled with the sweetest of residents. The rolling hillsides and wildflower fields are the perfect space for healthy and well-cared-for livestock to graze and live out their lives. The ore mines in Portia are well-known and responsible for most of the ore and mineral market in the kingdom, and the materials mined from these rich ore veins are both high in quality and value. Kilua had visited many times, touring the mines and whatnot, but a cat cafe was one experience she couldn't pass up.

When she entered, Asra was the one to greet her, immediately making her feel welcome and at home. The cats were beautiful, healthy, and soft, and Kilua couldn't help but wonder what it'd be like to work at a place like this. She and Asra chatted for hours, and the longer she stayed, the more difficult it became for her to leave. She decided that if Asra wasn't looking to hire, she'd continue her travelling lifestyle; but much to her surprise and excitement, she never ended up having to inquire- Asra was quick to offer her a position based on her personality alone- "My cats love you, so won't you stick around and play with them?"

At present, Kilua spends every afternoon working at the cat cafe, ensuring the cats' safety and the happiness of their guests. She and Asra have become closer than ever, the two hanging out at each other's houses on weekends, and spitballing cute events they could do to raise money for local animal shelters. Kilua never thought she would find such an amazing friend like Asra, but she is thankful every day for the way her life changed.

Prompt:
Found as a calf beneath a patch of Emberhearts by Zephyr, the town’s gardener, Ember was welcomed into the herd. But as she grew, so did her sense of solitude. Despite the townsfolk's warmth and kindness, she had always felt like an outsider. She would often spend her days wandering through the forest always keeping to herself.

One evening, while lying on a grassy knoll under a blanket of twinkling stars, Ember felt an unexpected rustle behind her. Turning cautiously, she saw Altalune emerging from a bush adorned with leaves and twigs. Their eyes met and instead of speaking, Altalune simply plopped down beside Ember in silence.

“Why are you here ??” Ember snapped, her tail flicked in annoyance.

“I thought you could use a friend.” Altalune replied not removing her gaze from the stars.

Embers mouth open and closed a few times and before being able to respond Altalune chimed in as she stood up sadness laced in her words. “I don’t know how it feels to not belong somewhere but this town has done its best to make you feel welcome. I understand it can be scary not knowing your true self but you don’t need to shut others out for that.”

Ember watched as she padded away back into the bushes. She felt a pang of sadness well inside her, but stayed with the stars abit longer. Slowly standing she ambled through the bushes and started to look for Altalune determined to apologise to her. She wasnt easy to find and after finally locating her she tapped on her shoulder. “Altalune can we please talk ??”. Altalune glanced at her before softly sighing and replied “Sure”.

The pair ambled out of earshot from the other heifers and settled near a small pond. Ember sat on the edge of the pond, her feet gently rippling the water’s surface as she gazed at her reflection.

“I’m sorry for snapping at you,” she began softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “I just… I don’t know how to be around others when I feel so lost myself.”

Altalune turned towards her, eyes reflecting understanding. “You don’t have to have it all figured out to belong,” she said gently. “Everyone feels lost sometimes. It’s part of being alive.”

Ember dipped her toes deeper into the cool water and watched as tiny fish darted away from her touch. “But what if they never really accept me? What if I never find where I fit?” Her heart raced with vulnerability as she spoke those fears aloud.

Altalune leaned closer and spoke
“Acceptance doesn’t come from fitting into someone else’s mold; it comes from being true to yourself and allowing others to see you for who you are.” Her voice was steady, filled with compassion.

Ember took a deep breath and let it out slowly, feeling some of the tension ease from her shoulders. “What if who I am isn’t enough?”

The stars twinkled overhead as Altalune pondered this question before responding thoughtfully. “You are enough simply by existing in this world,” she said firmly. “And those who matter will see that light within you.”

A silence settled between them, comfortable yet charged with unspoken emotions; the kind only friends could share without needing words and in that moment a friendship started to blossom.

What started as a rocky beginning now smoothed into an unbreakable bond between the two heifers. They always love to chat about the stars, or ponder over books detailing each and every star. Where one heifer is the other isn’t far the heifers often saying they are stuck together like glue. When night falls they sit embracing the serenity night brings occasionally breaking the silence as they whisper about the stars that dance above.

Prompt: (481 words)

it was a chilly winter on the grounds of hensworth college, and lowry had taken shelter in the unusually bustling library. of course, it was just the heating that was drawing everyone to the building, but she liked to imagine that the kind, old librarian she kept company on her downtime was suddenly seeing more business. in short, lowry was a fan of the library. but... it was not where she wanted to be at that moment. at that moment, she really, really needed to see one of her professors before everyone got out for winter break. however, the snow had picked up again, and she'd worn the wrong shoes for that kind of weather and forgotten her gloves at her dorm and—

someone ended up taking notice of lowry's agitation. that someone had the bright eyes of spring, an extra pair of mittens, and the complete and utter audacity to ask why lowry looked like she was about to blow her lid. and, as it turned out, that someone had been needing to see the very same professor. her name was lavender, and she kept lowry company until the storm subsided. they didn't talk about much at all, but lavender's steady hand was what lowry needed in order to realize that she would be completely fine. and that she perhaps wanted to see lavender again to talk some more. she had a tranquil way about her that lowry found captivating.

and, well, lowry was also looking for something (or someone) to keep her warm during those lonely, arctic nights.

suffice to say, lowry and lavender burned bright. they were lovers for only a few months, until they both needed to go back home. but that spring was, without contention, the most beautiful lowry had ever witnessed. the flowers seemed to have a glow about them; the air was permanently sweet. it was a mutual decision, though, that things had to end between them. they wouldn't stay apart forever, no—how out of the question! they were simply better as friends. when the new school year started up, they fell back into place, talking more often, playing video games, and grabbing lunch together.

and so what if the line crossed sometimes? everyone got cold.

a few years out from those whirlwind college years, and lavender is still lowry's best friend. even through life's ups and downs, they remain each other's rock, a shoulder to lean on and a patiently listening ear. though their busy lives prevent them from talking every single day, they both know the other will always be there, waiting for them when they come running. it's a comforting thought, especially for lowry, whose mind can make it seem as though the entire world has it out for her. but she knows that they are two parallel boats, and neither hell nor high water will rock them off that path.

Collar: Maybe something related to Ink? But artist choice!
Gender: DFAB

Prompt: (758)
Here's my barn, as I reference several names. They're just side characters, though!
Ink is the friend!

Odette had grown up between the barn and the meadow. There was never a reason to stray far, partially from the inability to leave the fence, all her small herd could ever need was right at their disposal. More grass than they could ever eat, a stream for drinking and bathing. There was a large oak in the center that had been around since the oldest heifer was just a calf, the tree bathing a portion of the meadow in shade. In addition, the little white barn provided her herd with a sturdy shelter and plenty of hay, though they never needed to eat it. Odette was perfectly happy in the meadow, with only one grievance that she would never make known to her herd.

Every single heifer in the field is older than her. Odette, while happy, does not have anyone her age to play with. She sees how the older cows act, giggling and nudging their friends, whispering in a quiet conversation that she is not a part of. Her one complaint is that in this meadow, there are no calves to play with.

It was storming when that changed. Rain was pouring in sheets, having long ago forced the herd into the barn. The winds were relentless, trees swaying while a few leaves were thrown off their branches and to the ground. Odette's herd was huddled in the largest stall, one big pile to wait out the storm. Corvid, the eldest, was telling stories to distract the other heifers from the flashing lightning that would irregularly light up the stall. There were signs that the storm would be getting worse before there was reprieve, the winds still beating against the siding of the barn.

Everything stopped at the distressed bawl. It was loud, high-pitched, and terrified. The rain was loud, but the distressed moo of some unknown calf was louder. A second cry had both Newton and Winsor jumping to their feet, hurrying for the barn door. Corvid rose to her feet, trying to keep the rest of the herd calm as Odette ran to the door, unwilling to brave the rain but watching as the two heifers searched for the source of the noise.

Newton was a ways away from the barn, almost to the fence, when she called for Winsor, the pair having split up to cover more ground. The Holstein hurried over, the two working carefully to free the shaking calf from the fence planks above and below her. The trio made their way back to the barn, minding the terrain as the small herd watched from the open door. The calf was between the two, legs shaky as she was helped to the shelter.

Corvid was quick to check over all three, assessing the cows for injury and nodding that there were none to be found. Only after they were all deemed safe were the others allowed to approach the newcomer, watching her curiously

The calf was only slightly smaller than Odette, mostly black with a small patch of white on her cheek. Her eyes were wide, one a soft red while the other was a bright orange. Her hide was soaked, forming a puddle beneath her as she glanced at unfamiliar faces. Odette approached slowly, steps light as she carefully brought over her own blanket as a sort of offering. The calf smiled lightly as it was tucked over her, looking around the barn.

It wasn't long before all three cows that had been outside were carefully herded back to the stall, assuming that the body heat would help them warm up from the rain as they slowly dried off. The calf ended up leaning against Odette, near the middle of the herd. She was still shivering but had seemingly grown comfortable due to the exhaustion from being out in the storm.

From the next day on, Odette and Ink (as she had given her name after resting) were inseparable. They were more often than not found prancing next to each other in the meadow, sporting new flower crowns every few days. Odette was always there for Inky during storms, using her blanket to help block out the flashes of lightning and booms of thunder. She'd whisper nonsensical stories, only for the ears of her best friend. It was a small distraction, the least she could do.

Maybe, eventually, a blush would fall on Odette's face when watching her dearest friend startle from a simple butterfly getting too close to her head. But that was just for her to know.
