it was a chilly winter on the grounds of hensworth college, and lowry had taken shelter in the unusually bustling library. of course, it was just the heating that was drawing everyone to the building, but she liked to imagine that the kind, old librarian she kept company on her downtime was suddenly seeing more business. in short, lowry was a fan of the library. but... it was not where she wanted to be at that moment. at that moment, she really,
really needed to see one of her professors before everyone got out for winter break. however, the snow had picked up again, and she'd worn the wrong shoes for that kind of weather and forgotten her gloves at her dorm and—
someone ended up taking notice of lowry's agitation. that someone had the bright eyes of spring, an extra pair of mittens, and the complete and utter audacity to ask why lowry looked like she was about to blow her lid. and, as it turned out, that someone had been needing to see the very same professor. her name was
lavender, and she kept lowry company until the storm subsided. they didn't talk about much at all, but lavender's steady hand was what lowry needed in order to realize that she would be completely fine. and that she perhaps wanted to see lavender again to talk some more. she had a tranquil way about her that lowry found captivating.
and, well, lowry was also looking for something (or someone) to keep her warm during those lonely, arctic nights.
suffice to say, lowry and lavender burned bright. they were lovers for only a few months, until they both needed to go back home. but that spring was, without contention, the most beautiful lowry had ever witnessed. the flowers seemed to have a glow about them; the air was permanently sweet. it was a mutual decision, though, that things had to end between them. they wouldn't stay apart forever, no—how out of the question! they were simply better as friends. when the new school year started up, they fell back into place, talking more often, playing video games, and grabbing lunch together.
and so what if the line crossed sometimes? everyone got cold.
a few years out from those whirlwind college years, and lavender is still lowry's best friend. even through life's ups and downs, they remain each other's rock, a shoulder to lean on and a patiently listening ear. though their busy lives prevent them from talking
every single day, they both know the other will always be there, waiting for them when they come running. it's a comforting thought, especially for lowry, whose mind can make it seem as though the entire world has it out for her. but she knows that they are two parallel boats, and neither hell nor high water will rock them off that path.
