Name: WH Organized Chaos // "Pandemonium" / "Pan"
Gender: DMAB
Prompt:
Pan was only a "teenager" when he was brought to a boarding facility while his humans went on vacation. Like any proud young dog, he trotted around on his too-long legs and pretended to be disinterested in the other dogs; in reality, he desperately wanted the others to admire him. Typical teenager. When he began to hear chatter about a potential race, he felt that he surely would win, and that this could be his chance to earn their respect for good. Three rounds later - all ending with him in the lead - cemented his pride. He had won by at least a tail's length each time; he felt on top of the world. But... the other dogs weren't so amused by his snooty nature. Pan shrugged it off, thinking that a few more winning rounds would change their minds.
As the fifth and final round approached, a new dog entered the race: a small, shy female with bright eyes. Pan scoffed as the polite collie dipped her head to him. She just smiled and rolled her eyes. The race began and Pan was off like a bullet, ears pressed flat against his head as he sped forward. As the finish line came into view, his fifth victory felt assured and, like any prideful creature, his cockiness overtook him. He slowed down. Quick as a bolt of lightning, the little female from earlier shot by him and passed the finish line. Pan was gobsmacked. The other dogs were quick to gather around the newest champion and give her all of the admiration that Pan had been racing for. Feeling more than a little dejected, Pan walked away and flopped down beneath a tree, pouting. He felt tears gather in the corners of his eyes. He felt ashamed.
"The others are just jealous. You could've won," a voice spoke up from right next to him and he nearly jumped out of his skin. It was the winning collie. She had sat next to him and was gazing at him softly.
"Huh?" He mumbled.
"You could've won," she repeated, giving a gentle wag of her tail, "If you hadn't slowed down, I might not have been able to beat you. I'm fast, and nobody has ever beaten me. But you? You could've." Pan looked at her, feeling bewildered. He didn't know how to respond. They looked at each other for a few awkward moments, then the female cleared her throat and got to her paws.
"Ah, 'm... anyway," she began to walk away, "It was a good race. Thanks." Pan's heart beat fast in his chest. Surely he should say something, right? She was leaving! If he didn't say anything, he could never face her again... and they were in the same kennel... it would be so awkward...
"W-we can have a rematch! Maybe tomorrow? When we're both rested?" He called after her in a wavering voice. She turned and blinked at him, then a huge smile broke out on her face. Her tail wagged furiously.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'd like that." She responded warmly.
Pan's tail wagged just as fast.
