DGAB: AMAB

Prompt:
Before the Shores
824 words

Puppy flung himself across the Alley, dodging twin blows from a mangy red tabby cat. Puppy wasn't going to hurt another cat, but he kind of had to if he was going to escape this alleyway he had ended up in. He swung a large paw forwards, batting the cat on its cheek. That apparently wasn't acceptable, so the cat retaliated by barreling into Puppy and sending him sprawling.
Suddenly, an unaccounted for sound of pounding paws echoed around the dirty, graffiti covered brick walls. A booming bark erupted in the air, making Puppy's opponent yowl and twist around. Two massive Mastiffs bursted into the Alley, the fading echoes of barks sounding like hideous cackles. The larger one crashed into the Alley-Cat, and Puppy braced himself for an attack from the second. But it never came. Instead, the brute trotted up to Puppy, shoving its damp nose into Puppy's fur. Backing up cautiously, Puppy narrowed his eyes. The Mastiff tilted its head and wagged its cropped brindled tail, letting drool drip down its sagging jaws.
And then Puppy realized what was happening. This gargantuan yet incredibly stupid dog thought that Puppy was also a dog. And then a striking, feline yowl rang out from behind him.
Whipping around, Puppy saw that the first brute had its dripping maws tight around Puppy's former opponent's neck. He couldn't just leave the cat there to die, so he rolled over and assumed a quite humiliating stance. Puppy wagged his back end, submitting to the dogs and inviting them to come sniff his matted fur. It took Puppy's invitation very seriously, and immediately came over to learn everything about Puppy with his scent. Slowly rolling onto his side and standing, Puppy turned and tore out of the Alley. The two brutes chased him giddily, kicking up brown water from the puddles that draped the streets. Puppy took a sharp left turn and darted behind a restaurant, where he often begged for scraps. The two dumb Mastiffs gallivanted right past the building.
Puppy didn't have time for puppy eyes and charm, so he lept into the garbage bin and pulled out a cooked, half-eaten piece of salmon. He trotted around the side of the building and back onto the sidewalk, letting the people point and coo at him. When Puppy reached the Alley, the Alley-Cats had once again started to congregate in the center. Puppy gave his most convincing bark, and the cats scattered. All but one, hunched inside of a broken crate. A scarred and battered red tabby. Puppy sauntered up to the crate, and dropped the meat in front of the cat.
"Eat this, you need to regain your strength."
The tabby sneered, "Like I would eat anything from a cat who practically lives with the humans."
"Fine, I'll eat it myself," Puppy shrugged, and picked up the meal.
"Wait!" The cat hissed, "I'll take it."
Puppy smirked and returned the fish, "I'm Puppy."
"Ember."
The way Ember ate was much too elegant to be any male Alley-Cat, so she must have been one of the few She-Cats that lived there.
When Ember was finished eating, she looked up at Puppy and quirked an eyebrow, "Your name is seriously 'Puppy'?"
Puppy nodded, and sat back on his haunches, looking at the sea-colored sky to see how much daylight was left. It wouldn't be too long until the moon rose.
"I've often thought about leaving the Alley," Ember said, lifting up a paw to clean it, "There's really not anything left for me to stay for."
Puppy's ears perked, "'Left'?"
Ember didn't say anything and continued to groom herself.
"I've thought about leaving as well. I feel that life out in the wild would be better than living in a place where humans are everywhere," Puppy murmured.
Ember looked up, and tilted her head at Puppy. "Perhaps it would be safer for both of us if we left together."
Puppy considered this for a moment, tucking his paws under his fluffy, dirty white chest. That was true, it was much safer to travel with a companion. Ember wasn't much of a companion, though. She had started their day off by trying to kill him because he entered the Alley.
Either way, it would be easier for Puppy to get anywhere he wanted if he had a killing machine with him.
"We should travel together. I know a way out of the city, if you can lead us to the beach," Puppy offered, watching Ember twist around to clean her side.
Ember raised her head, thinking, and nodded.
"I'll meet you at the butcher's shop at first light," Puppy declared, and trotted out of the Alley.
Behind Puppy, Ember turned her head and sat up, "We'll make it to the beach in three sunrises."
Puppy twisted his body, looking back at Ember. Her amber eyes were brighter than they were earlier, and shone against the dirty and damp street.

Name: Cream —> Poppyclaw
DGAB: DFAB
Origin: Kittypet -> Clan cat
Prompt: Cream was a pampered Kittypet, always living the good life, realistic toys, special cat nip, special food, and even an outside enclosure for her to relax in but keep the mean cats out of her property, Cream absolutely LOVED being a Kittypet, it wasn’t until her family was moving that cream got a taste of the real world, as the commotion of moving barged through her home she panicked and ran out the door, her twolegs tried to chase her but it only scared her more, she dashed through tree and ditches until she was certain the danger was gone, upon looking around she found herself in unfamiliar territory with loud noises and terrible smells everywhere, Cream longed to be with her family again. As she started following her fear scent back home she was tackled from behind, claws tore at her pelt and she could feel teeth grasping for her scruff, in a panic her fight or flight instinct kicked in and she flipped her attacker around and pinned their throat down with one paw while churning her back legs on their soft belly until her attacker yowled and struggled out of her grip, rounding on her again her attacker was panting, blood trickled from the wound on their stomach. “Not bad for a Kittypet” the cat sneered and launched himself again. Cream rolled out of the way and jumped on her attackers back, digging her claws into his shoulders she bit his scruff until he stopped struggling and she could feel his body go limp, feeling triumphant she let go of his scruff just in time for the attacker to throw her off and jump on her “STOP!” A voice bellowed from the trees, A sandy orange cat came out, “That’s enough, she may be a Kittypet but she defended herself like a warrior”
Cream was taken aback “What’s a warrior?” She asked scared “I just want to go back to my twolegs please!” She begged. Fiona looked at her with sympathy in her eyes “I’m Fiona, I used to be a Kittypet as well but now I’m deputy of my clan in line to be leader, why don’t you let us take you to our camp, you can have a meal and get some care for your scratches and be on your way” Cream looked at her kind eyes and felt safe “I-I guess I could go for a bit, I am a little sore after that” Fiona purred happily, leading cream to her clans home “With claws that sharp I’d say you could be a genuine asset to a clan if they were lucky” Fiona poked a bit feeling out the Kittypet and her desires. Cream stopped “I haven’t really felt like that before, she raw feeling of fighting for your life and I kinda enjoyed it, would I have to change my name?” Fiona looked at her “Most cats do, I didn’t, but that was my choice and my clanmates didn’t like it at first but they’ve grown used to it” Cream thought about it “Well I’ve always liked the name Poppy, could that be my warrior name?” Fiona purred, most warrior names are a little different than our Kittypet names” Fiona gave her a long thoughtful look “I could talk to my clan leader and see what he says about Poppyclaws? Claws that sharp have to be treasured and you could still have the name you like, what do you think?” Cream followed Fiona farther into the forest “Well I’m not sure my twolegs will like me leaving forever but I can’t see the harm in staying for a day or two while things settle at my twolegs nest” Cream entered the clans hallow and instantly was greated by many cats of all sizes, she felt surprisingly at home and was ready to settle down for a good nights sleep with a full belly. “Maybe my life brought me here for a reason” she thought to herself as her eyes fluttered shut and sleep grasped her deeply

Snow is coming down faster and heavier now, and Larkpool is glad he spotted the ancient dead oak with it’s hollowed out roots before the world is blanketed in white. He sits just inside the opening, tail neatly curled over his paws, and watches the branches of the nearby trees sway with the howling wind. He doesn’t mind this kind of weather, finds it exciting really, but since he doesn’t want to get too lost from the trail, Larkpool figures he better hunker down and wait for the squall to pass.

The silence between the gusts of wind was deafening, and simply made Larkpool’s thoughts louder. It’s only been half a moon since he left his clan to explore the world, but he already feels a little homesick. With the passing of his mother onto Starclan, there wasn’t much keeping him tied to the clan, no other kin or friends really…well maybe just one friend. She was with kit though so the journey across the mountains would not be safe. Icey regret floods Larkpool’s belly. Maybe he was too hasty to leave, to leave her behind in an overpopulated clan with the prey spreading thinner and thinner from so many mouths to feed. He promised her that he’d return at the start of Greenleaf, once he’s established a home to start her new family. He just couldn’t stay there, not a single day longer. They both knew it.

A stray snowflake makes its way into the makeshift den and right on Larkpool’s nose. It’s chill causing the reverie to fade, though his feelings still remain. He takes it as a message from Starclan, maybe even his mother, Snowskip. To him, each action is a moment of pain, of life, of confusion. Like the swirling snow blown here and there by the wind, a cat can either accept their fate or aimlessly circle nothingness, or they can dig in their claws and choose where to go or what to do. Larkpool has made his choice, now he must keep fighting to make it the right one.

As if to mark approval of his meditation, the sun shines through the clouds, indicating the winter storm will soon be over. The snow sparkles with a thousand tiny pinpricks of light, and Larkpool can’t help but feel the joy of it all well up inside him. Springing to his feet, he leaps and frolics around the glade, gleefully howling and kicking up as much fuss as possible. His life is only just beginning, Larkpool can feel it!
