{Word count - 264] When Licorice first came to the clan and was just starting to learn all the stories and rules about the clan she had extremely big goals, deciding she wanted to go straight to being the leader. That lasted for all of a day before she tried to climb up a rock, and fell onto her butt. She then decided that being a leader 'just wasn't for her' and instead started rattling on about how cool of a deputy she'd be instead. She's started her training, which is mainly consisting of her befriending all the other clan cats. She's said that a good deputy has to be friendly to all the clan mates, you know so they'd trust her enough to explain everything that's wrong with the clan, Plus if she befriended everyone once the new leader is picked they'll totally be more likely to pick her as their deputy. Despite most of her training being just her slacking off and snuggling up with everyone, she's also going through the hard training to become a hunter too. A deputy's duties sometimes mean they have to go out on hunts or dig some tunnels too, and despite leaders getting more credit for most feats the Deputies end up doing just as much work if not more than the leaders do and most of the clan would reason that the deputies are the more responsible of the two, so Licorice's goal to be Deputy is going to be a hard but well respected one... that is if she doesn't end up giving up on this one too.

With the unsteady steps of a kitten still unused to their own legs, Plecokit stumbled to the edge of the nest and looked out at the marsh around himself. The morning was shaping up to be a humid one, and the thick air was full of the sound of birds, their heavy wingbeats the only breeze in the still air.

Plecokit squinted and saw, silhouetted against the sun, the distant shapes of cats moving out in the more open parts of the marsh, where the trees and brush gave way to nothing but grass and water. Out there, from the stories he had heard and the glimpses visible through the trees, there was a shifting world of water and light, the domain of the hunters and the scouts, the cats who could navigate a changing world reshaped at the mercy of rolling storms and flowing tides.

He wanted nothing more than to be out there.

Out there, in the light, with the salt breeze in his whiskers, the soft ground—or no ground at all—beneath his feet, following the glinting bodies of mullet and darters to find a meal for the evening. The den was nice enough, lined with collected strands of hanging moss, but it felt cramped compared to the expansive world visible through gaps in the trees.
On that hot and humid morning, he resolved that he would become a hunter for the clan, no matter the training or the heat or the risk of crocodiles. He would be a hunter and become a spirit of the saltmarsh, to bring food home from those shining waters, for the pride of his clan. The thought filled his heart with glee, and he returned to the nest full of dreams.

"What is that? Next to the kit?"

Cats gathered around, some standing in the water and some leaning on each other's backs to peer down at the little marshy hollow where the two kittens had been found. It seemed like the whole clan had arrived to get a glimpse of the new—and rather mysterious—arrivals. None of the clan had been anticipating kittens, and so while the kittens themselves were drawing a spectacle, the kitten with the white spot on the tip of their tail was attracting extra attention. Not because of the kitten themself—the kitten was relatively standard by the opinions of the gathered cats—but because of the creature that had curled itself around them.

Although the kitten’s companion hadn’t left their side, the assembled cats guessed at the creature being about three times the length of an adult cat, most of that being made up of a thick, paddled tail at the end of a thick, tubular body. The head was broad and flat, but definitively not angular and bony like the caimans that frequented Marshclan territory; instead, the texture of the head seemed more like that of an enormous frog, an effect added to by the small eyes on the top of the head. Down the rest of the body, however, the creature seemed to have bony scales like a gar, interlocking over a thick, powerful body. Whenever a cat drew close to the kitten or its apparent protector, the creature would push itself up on thick, stumpy legs and open its vast jaws to hiss at the approach, revealing hundreds of tiny, sharp teeth. After darting back when the creature snapped at them, one cat reported that the creature’s legs didn’t end in paws, but instead strange, thick fins like those of a mudskipper. Overall, the creature looked like something out of another time.

“We have to get the kitten, though; they’re bound to be cold and hungry at this rate. Any ideas?”

A murmur went through the crowd, and a runner was sent to get the Marshclan leader. They were skilled in speaking with the varied denizens of the marshlands, and were highly regarded for their diplomacy. After a brief wait, the leader arrived and laid down in the mud before the creature, burbling and clacking their jaws for some time. The assembled cats watched, spellbound, before their leader stood up and licked the wetness from their forepaws.

“We have reached an accord, I believe; the creature was concerned we were predators, having apparently never met a cat before,” they began. “They named the kitten Goby, and after deliberation, have agreed to join us together. Please, welcome Gobykit, and their companion Marshwalker!”
