Since birth, Lightning was selected to be the next Keeper of the Travellers, the cat who holds stories of old and learns the oral lore of the world as seen by them. Keepers are selected at birth and given a special cord to show their status in the clan. Once they reach the age of 4 moons, they start to learn from the current Keeper. There are only ever two Keepers at a time - the current one and their apprentice. The apprentice becomes a full-fledged Keeper when the one who trained them retires (or dies) and is given the lantern cord. Lightning is the apprentice one and has been for about four full season cycles, learning and reciting nearly all of the stories. Their favorite story is one they heard two seasons ago, near the Great River.

The Ancestors (cats who have ceased existing in the living world) brought him to an old fox den, filled with colorful mud paintings with the red-rich dirt near the river. It told the story of cats learning to fly after saving an injured old bird from a snake. The bird had been a special bird sent by the Ancestors to warn of the snake within their group, and granted the cat who saved it the power to step on clouds. Cloudstepper (as Lightning had called the cat) led his group to safety in a home above the clouds, where no other cat could reach them. He called his groups of cats Eagle's Clan, after the bird who had granted him the power to leap on clouds.

Imagine his delight when the Travellers found EagleClan in the mountains this fall. The Travellers had asked to stay with them, but were chased out after one of the other Travellers was involved in an accidental maiming of a Clan cat. They stayed nearby, running into MooseClan, who sheltered them for the winter, while the mountains were too dangerous to pass. While there, Lightning learned of StarClan, much like his Ancestors, and was intrigued. He learned the ways of the Clan, hunted with them, patrolled with them, and discovered his love of the mountains.

When it came time to go, Lightning approached his mentor, Fast River, and told her he couldn't come with. He had been a waste of time to train, as he wants to stay with the Clan. To his surprise, Fast River bowed her head in acceptance. He tried to give her the cord back, and she instead gave him her cord. It was his turn to hold the light, she said. She had shown him that stories were from all over the world and staying with one group of cats had prevented her from learning more stories. It was her wish for him to have the lantern until one of his kits could take it from him. She would stay with the Travellers and train a new Keeper, one who would take a year to travel alone before becoming a full-fledged Keeper.

Lightning came back to the clan, determined to become the best warrior and keeper he could be. Mintstar gave him his warrior name, Moonshadow, for the colors of his coat and their dedication to their upbringing.
