Postby JaxyTheGhost » Wed Sep 18, 2024 4:15 am

Owner: JaxyTheGhost
Name: Alaric
DGAB: DMAB
Origin: Cor
Prompt: 1002 words
Alaric, despite his more than impressive age, still refused to retire from his position as grand guard and claims to be just as capable and strong as the young soldiers that train under him.
Nonetheless he loves to gather all the younglings around his nest, the very one he shared with Matilda not too long ago, and tells them stories.
Most of the time these stories are of his glorious adventures, enormous fights and heroic quests he took on and the younglings eat them up like fresh meat.
But his favorite story is a different one.to tell. A story without fight, without bloodshed but full of love and bittersweet memories.
It’s the story of how Alaric, for the very first time, met his sweet darling Matilda; may the ancestors keep her safe between them.

Back then Alaric was a young soldier himself. The gaping maw that connects Cor with the Upper Circle hasn’t been opened yet and the cats of Cor have never truly seen sunlight. The only source of light they knew were the various fluorescent plants and animal parts around the underground land. Even then the Lower Circle, only known as the Circle so far, had special roles for those chosen by the light.
The Lightkeeper, a rank now forgotten and replaced by the Beholders. A rank that was laid upon a cat in kittenhood and grew with them until a new Lightkeeper would be born to supersede. It was a Guards duty to protect the Lightkeeper as it is their duty to protect Cor in general.
Light is one of the most important things within Cor and during the “age of darkness” as they have grown to know it, it was thought of as more important than food or shelter.
Without light the cats were without guidance, without Ancestors.

“Matilda was a few moons younger than me” he always tells the younglings.

>> Back when I first met her she was a youngling herself and I just became a soldier. It was tradition for every new Soldier to greet the Lightkeeper and hopefully be granted their blessing. So our little squat made their way up the caves into the one that sat right below the maw that we know today. Back then right there was where the Lightkeeper lived and went about their day. Lihan himself went with us. He looked so proud that day.

Alaric always looks so soft and lovable when he tells this part of the story. As of it happened just moments ago. As if the beauty of the Lightkeeper’s cave was still close to his heart. For a few moments he acts like this before - every time - he shakes his head and puts on his well worn mask of confidence and roughness.

>> The hallway to her cave was dark. Way darker than any part of Cor I had seen before. And I have to admit: I was scared. So scared. I knew from discussions with older Soldiers or young Guards that the former Lightkeeper was a very arrogant and short tempered cat. One who did not shy away from punching and keeping you down with her words and cold stare alone.
This was the first blessing the new Lightkeeper would complete. I didn’t even know her name, just that she was a tad younger than me and apparently born in a little group of cats that lived offside the main Camp.
One by one we were called into the cave by Lihan. I was the last one and with every passing second my heart beat faster. The soldiers coming out of the cave seemed distant, shaken up. As if something happened in that cave that they couldn’t possibly process.
When it was my turn I was shaking. My heart was racing and it felt like I would pass out any moment. However, if I wanted to continue my training I had to get this blessing. So I gathered all the bravery in my soul and went inside.

At this point of the story Alaric likes to take a moment to breathe and remember exactly what he felt in this very moment that happened so many moons ago. He misses his mate so incredibly badly and in his eyes it was anything but fair that she was taken from him far too early by the very same earthquake that opened up the passage to the world above.

>> The inside of the cave… it was the most light I ever saw. The walls were littered in glowing vines and moss, similar to the vines Astar uses to decorate his pelt with.
The light was blinding and for a moment I couldn’t see a thing. And when my eyes finally adjusted to the surroundings I thought that I had died and a goddess was standing right in front of me. Her white fur glowed bright and seemed to be almost blue in the fluorescent lighting. Her eyes were the most beautiful ones I had ever seen and will ever see. And her voice-... When she talked it was over for me. I was lost in a world so different from the one I knew and I did not want to ever get back. I wanted to keep her in my life even if it was the last thing that I would do.

Most of the time this is where the story ends. A happy ending. two halves of a soul that found their other half and stayed with them until the very end. Some younglings may think this story is boring compared to the others Alaric tells them but others see it for its true potential.
Even a strong leader-type can have their weaknesses and sometimes said weakness can be another cat. One they might feel very strongly for and one they would do anything to see happy.
Alaric might be a pain in ones behind, stubborn and very short tempered but he also has his soft side. The side only Matilda ever truly got to see.

    Good to know
  • Grand Guard - Highest Guard title there is; get chosen from the Guardians themselves
  • Guards - typical “Warriors”, it’s their job to protect the cats of Cor particularly the Beholders (or Lightkeeper, formerly)
  • Lightkeeper - A cat that was “chosen” by light itself as a kitten, they basically get worshiped like a god (they aren’t a god)
  • Beholder - There are 5 Beholders, it’s their job to “communicate” with the sun. They also function as medical cats within Cor
  • Upper Circle/Lower Circle/Circle - Circle is the word I use for Clan. Upper/Lower just describes if the Circle lives above or beneath normal ground level
  • Soldier - train to become Guards
  • Youngling - Cats from the ages of 0 to 7 moons

    Mentioned NPCs
  • Guardians - Hel and Lihan were the original Guardians (Gods) of Cor. After their passing Altar and his siblings took over their role (as of right now only Astar is an acting Guardian)
  • Matilda - Alaric’s dead mate. She was the last known Lightkeeper and trained most of the current Beholders.

Postby Moonblaze-Angel » Wed Sep 18, 2024 4:18 am

Owner: Moonblaze-Angel 516957
Name: Moose
DGAB: Male
Origin: Loner turned Clan elder
Prompt: His favorite story is telling the 'paws how he got his name!

Moose shuffles his paws around, trying to warm his toes up despite the cold earth. The 'paws finally had the time to clean out the den and fix his moss up all cozy like. He'd been gently prodding them to do it all day yesterday.

"How does that look?" One of them asks, the newest apprentice. She's pretty thoughtful, this one, even taking time to place a few feathers from her breakfast in it.

"Mighty fine, there, li'l one. Let me just test it out right quick-" he states as he gently places himself in the nest. A few years back, he might have been crabby with the old man treatment, but now his bones were grateful for the extra padding and warmth in the nest. "Oh yes, this will do nicely."

He turns to eye the two new 'paws, both named this moon. He hadn't had time to chat with them much and that bothered him.

"Well now, I s'pose I owe you two a story, now, don't I? Settle in here, you can take Cloudflower's nest for now. She likes to sun on the rocks in leaffall, she don't need it." He pauses as the two gingerly sit in the freshly made moss, slowly sinking in. Two bundles of fluff they are. He knows just the story to get them re-energized for their training.

"Well you two are fresh li'l 'paws, ain't ya, and I doubt you know much about me. I'll just have to fix that! You twos know I'm Moose, but did I ever tell you why I kept that name and not a clan name? I'm the reason the Clan is named MooseClan ya know!"

The two 'paws exchange glances, bewildered. How come the Clan is named after this old coot? Moose starts up again.

"Well before I was such an experienced young adventurer as I am, I used ta be a loner. I know! Me, without anyone to tell stories to. A downright shame. " The kits giggle at this. "It was just me, see, and this one twoleg who came into the forest every now and then. And I know Minthop says all the uprights are bad and all, but not this one. She was a real catch, she was, always bringing me treats. We'd walk all around the forest together, slow like o' course, for her slow walk."

He pictured the first time they'd met, when she brought him a piece of meat. "We went around the normal paths down, down by the end o' the river, near twoleg place. Well, one day, she decided to go real far like. Right on up to the waterfall, right past the edge of our territory here. She was young, I think, like you two, and like me." More giggles from the 'paws.

"She didn't know any better but it was right about the time the moose all come out and get drinks o' water there. She was climbing all around the rocks and being a real twoleg, she was. Well, at one point, it's just us, an we hear a weird noise. And I knows it's a moose, of course, 'cause I'm a real smart cat, but she was just a silly twoleg. And she goes right towards it! And I'm tryna warn her, tripping her up and yowling like, but then she keeps on going. I didn't want to give our position away o' course, so I stopped yowling and just followed along."

"What next? What next? Did you find the moose?" One of the 'paws interrupts, enraptured by the story.

"I'm gettin' to it! Where was I? Oh right, we was just getting to the moose. My upright, she goes right into the clearing with it. I stop at the side, see, and she does, too, just a bit in front. And that's when it spots us! And they're big, mean, creatures see, much worse than foxes or eagles or badgers! And it spots us. My upright, she doesn't even move, puts out a hand like she's tryna give it food! And that moose roars, all scary like, and she freezes! Scared her right near to death. And then it charges us, and we'll, I wasn't havin' that."

He crouches low in his nest, mimicking his words. "I crouched down and I ran right at it! Yelled all the curse words I knew, too, woulda made your mom cuff me on the ears. I got real close and jumped up onto its side and clawed my way up its back. I started just clawing and scratching away. It tried to buck me off, but I was just too strong. It turned right around, away from that twoleg, and started back the way it came from. I jumped off right before it left the clearing." The two kits sat shocked, and mighty impressed.

"Well, since that day, she called me Moose. And Moose I was. I been telling everyone since then. And someday, when you 'paws earn your warrior name, you'd better come back an' tell me just how it happened. Ya hear?"

Re: Runaways #0051

Postby lacke » Wed Sep 18, 2024 4:41 am

    Owner: lacke
    Name: raggedthorn
    DGAB: amab
    Origin: former loner
Prompt: the story of serenity finding him!

Raggedthorn stretched his thin, bony limbs and settled into the soft ground as the kits gathered eagerly around him. His ribs showed through his fur, but his eyes gleamed with warmth. He glanced over at Serenity, who was resting not far away from the group, her pelt glowing softly in the moonlight. She caught his gaze and gave him a small nod.

"Tonight," the elder rasped, "I'll tell you about how I came to be a part of this clan. But it isn't just my story - it's Serenity's too." The kits leaned in closer, their ears perked with curiosity. They had heard many tales about the elders adventures, but they had never heard how he found his way into Eclipseclan. "Long before I joined the clan, I wandered the forest alone. I wasn't always this thin, nor was I always this old. I was a loner - fierce, independent, and as stubborn as a badger. I had seen many seasons come and go, and I believed I could survive anything the wild threw at me." He let out a dry chuckle, and the kits watched him intently. "But even the strongest cats can't outrun the seasons forever."

Raggedthorn looked up at the sky, his expression softening. "One leaf-bare, the prey grew scarce, and my body began to fail me. My ribs stuck out, and my legs trembled beneath me. I was too proud to ask for help, too proud to admit that I was losing the battle with the wilderness. I thought I could outlast anything, but the truth is, the wild doesn't care about pride." The kits shivered, imagining the harsh cold of leaf-bare and the gnawing hunger the tom must have faced.

"I was ready to accept my fate," he continued, his voice growing quieter. "But then, in the darkest part of that leaf-bare, something happened." His gaze flicked to Serenity, who was now watching him closely. "I stumbled into a strange part of the forest, one that I had never seen before. The trees were tall and shadowed, the ground thick with frost. I thought it was the end for me. My legs gave out, and I collapsed. That's when I saw her." The kits' eyes widened, and they glanced between Raggedthorn and Serenity, who remained still and silent. "She came out of the shadows like a beam of sunlight piercing through the trees. Her fur was bright, her eyes sharp and warm. I thought I was seeing a spirit at first, but no, she was real. Serenity had found me."

The kits looked at Serenity with a newfound sense of awe. She continued to listen, her expression calm. "She didn't speak right away - she didn't have to. She just looked at me - really looked at me - and in that moment, I knew she understood. She had seen struggle before. She knew what it meant to walk the line between life and death."

"What did she do?" One of the kits asked in a hushed voice.

The elder's smile softened. "Serenity didn't pity me, and she didn't scold me for my pride. Instead, she offered me a choice. She said, 'The forest has taken much from you, but there is still balance to be found. If you're willing to follow me, I can help you find it.'" He paused, remembering the moment with vivid clarity. "I didn't know what she meant by 'balance' back then. I was a loner, used to fighting for every scrap of prey and territory. But there was something in her voice, something in the way she stood, that made me want to trust her."

The kits hung on his every word, their eyes wide.

"So, I followed her," Raggedthorn said, his voice filled with warmth. "She led me back to what was hen the beginnings of Eclipseclan. She and a few other cats had already begun building something different - a clan that wasn't just about survival or strength, but about understanding the balance between light and dark, the sun and the moon." His gaze turned to Serenity again. "She showed me that I didn't have to fight the wild alone anymore. She taught me that even in my old age, even with all the hardships I'd faced, there was still a place for me. There was still balance to be found."

The elder's voice grew quieter, more reflective. "And that's how I came to join Eclipseclan. Not as a fierce Dawnbringer, but as a Sunsetter, a keeper of memories. Serenity saw something in me that I had long forgotten: a purpose. And now, I tell these stories to you, the next generation, so you can carry the balance forward." The kits turned to look at Serenity with admiration, their respect for their leader deepening with every word.

Serenity finally spoke, her voice soft but firm. "The forest teaches us all, in its own way. It's up to use to listen."

Raggedthorn smiled as Serenity rose to her paws and padded silently away into the shadows, leaving the kits to ponder the story of how she had not saved just a life, but a soul.

Re: Runaways #0051

Postby Adamented » Wed Sep 18, 2024 6:47 pm

Owner: Adamented
Name: Mouseleap
DGAB: amab
Origin: Loner
Prompt:
Mouseleap loves to tell his most harrowing tale, living only with his littermates and mother they were often hungry... One day, as only an apprentice-aged cat barely older than the kits themselves- or so he claims- he caught an aroma of fish that made his starving belly twist. The scent led him to an upwalker nest, he could tell the fish was inside and hum-ed and haw-ed. He paced back and forth, his desperation and hunger warring with his sense of self-preservation and common sense. The upwalker nest had a window open, he could tell the fish couldn't be far from it, the intense smell made his mouth water and with the scent of dog quickly approaching along with an upwalker around the corner...

Mouse's hunger made the decision for him with a loud GGRRRoooOOooWLL! (Described to the kits in this exact way too!!)

Before he could twist up his whiskers any more about it, his paws carried him deftly toward the low fence, and then over it- hwaAAAH! Right over in one bound, a clean arch, something his ancestors would be proud of! If only it wasn't such a truly mouse[i]-brained idea, anyway. His hackles raised, a sudden outburst of barking erupted- there was a snarling twisting hurricane of fur in a flurry headed right for him with yaps and snarls and barks! The low fence was keeping a short-legged beast at bay behind it, and he had put himself right into it's path of gnashing teeth and sharp claws.

Mouse didn't stick around to fight it, with a hiss and a spit he turned and ran, right to a spot below the nest's window and waggled his tail before pushing off the ground toward the window sill. The cursed beast nearly clasped his tail in it's jaws, but he managed to slip just out of it's reach, safe at last... or so he had thought!

    There was a [i]pile
of fish right there, right below the window! Poor Mouse fell into a shine round thing full of gross, slimy, fish-smelling stuff with a yowl of shock. He launched himself out of the thing with a loud clatter as it tipped, spilling the fish-stuff everywhere and coating the floor. A shout sounded from somewhere away and Mouse puffed up, fear filled his whole body- he didn't think, he just MOVED! He turned back towards the window, then paused. He didn't come this far to leave with an empty maw and a sore belly! An upwalker burst through a door, yowling angrily at him and swinging a broom!

The mean upwalker nearly struck him with the yellow bristly end of it, but before he could, Mouse leaped for the table under the window. Huuuge fish sat there in a pile, a shiny pointed stick next to them on the shiny surface. His paws scrambled on he surface, it was smooth! Like ice over the thunderpath streams in the cold season, he slipped over it right into the fishy pile. It was an absolute mess. The fish were huge, shiny silvery scales slit open on the belly, he wasn't sure he could even carry one when they very well could have weighed more than him! (he loved this part the best, the kits would yowl in disbelief, "A fish!" They would shout, "A fish bigger than an apprentice?! No way!!")

"Yes, WAY!" He would coo to the kits, continuing the story.

Mouse found the smallest fish of the bunch and bit in, the taste made his mouth water so bad he was afraid he wouldn't be able to grip it, just as the upwalker struck down toward him again with the bristled stick! It struck the pile of fish and sent it sprawling, shouting as he slipped off the table and onto the floor. It slammed the window shut with a THUMP, his escape route was gone... then he saw the open door. Mouse beelined for it, paws scrambling for grip on a smooth floor, until he stumbled onto what felt like coarse moss under-paw. Another upwalker squealed, two upwalker kits shouting in delight and their heavy paws thudding after him. His tail bristled as far as it could go, he thought his fur would never lie flat again!

The chaotic cacophony of the dog's barking and howling that had fallen to the background of his panic was getting closer, he scrambled to a stop as a flurry of dark fur burst through a white flap in the bottom of another door, he leapt away! The upwalkers shouted, shrieked, and chased!

Poor Mouse thought he might collapse of fear and exhaustion, without thinking he changed direction! Another window was open, he could glimpse the outside. The upwalker kits were on him, one almost had his tail, the fish in his maw was slowing him down but he turned and ducked- SWOOSH right under the upwalker kit's stumbling legs!

He could see it, the opening, right behind a shouting upwalker, standing in front of a couch and flailing their arms hysterically. Mouse ran right for it and it scurried out of the way, nearly tripping as the dog got under it's paws. He leaped, practically bouncing off the soft material, and bounded WOOSH, right out the window!

The fall was hard and he stumbled, dropping his fish for a moment. The window slammed shut behind him, the dog's face gnashing at the glass while its muffled barks rung from inside. Mouse didn't wait to find out if any other threats were around, he grabbed the fish by the tail and bounded off, practically tripping with every step as it wobbled between his paws.

They ate really well, but he never went near that twoleg again! He'd nearly been food for their monsters, streaming across the thunderpath back to the small forest where his family was hiding.

The kits are always disbelieving, but Mouse swears every bit of it is true. He still feels the tension in his old bones, recounting the tale vividly, as if reliving a memory. Long after the kits have left the den, he sits quietly grooming his fur flat again, and revels in the comfort of the other elders. It's been a lifetime of fear and loneliness, worrying about where his next meal would come from. Without HareClan, he wouldn't be able to live as comfortably as he does now.

Not the soft life of a kittypet but a life of purpose, loyalty, and honor. Mouseleap received his name from Pikastar with pride, he would always owe her his utmost thanks, for showing him that life could be more after the family he once provided for was far behind him. She gave him something he could never return her kindness for, a family, and a place to rest when he grew old and weary. As a kit, as an apprentice-aged loner, even as he grew to an adult, he never imagined he might be able to retire or that younger cats would one day provide for him as he did his mother. HareClan is his kin, in all but blood.

TLDR; Mouseleap tells a story about apprentice-aged Mouse stealing a fish from a twoleg nest and the ensuing chaos, as he rushed to escape it after being trapped inside, chased by a big twoleg with a broom, a ferocoious small dog, and two restless twoleg kits!

Owner: LittleMaple
Name: Screeching Owl
DGAB: afab cis she/her
Origin: old clanborn
Prompt: Screeching Owl purrs fondly when you ask the question. She turns to the kits who play under their mothers' paws, a mock battle underway. "Well, since many of them weren't born in the old territory, they like to hear stories about it. Their favorite is probably how Hawkclan came to be," she tells you. You tilt your head in question, and they make a noise of acknowledgement. "Aw, that's right, you don't know that one... well, how about I tell you?" She offers. You rapidly nod your head and she smiles. "Lovely! Well, settle down, and I'll tell you." The kits see her preparing to start story time and scamper over to curl around and listen with excitement. "Well, it starts in the old territories. Our leader at the time was Doestar, and while she was very brave and intelligent, she was also very stubborn. Our clan had been suffering due to the recent intense thunderstorms that showed no sign of stopping. Many cats expressed a belief that if we found a new territory the storms would be less, and we might have a chance of surviving without losing more warriors. Doestar though... well, she was scared. She thought if we moved territories we wouldn't be able to find enough prey or would run into another clan. One sunrise, there was a storm unlike any other. The wind tore the trees up from their roots, cats would get lifted up and thrown across camp. One of the large trees that bordered camp made a sickening creak before the roots tore from the ground the tree crashed to the ground on top of Doestar and the deputy, Hazelburn. After it was all over, Finchleap, our medicine cat, saw a red-tailed hawk land on a tree that had been burnt and blackened. In that moment, she knew it was a sign from Starclan. Hawkstar, at the time Hawkstorm, would be the new leader. We moved territories after that, and many of us took on new names. Like me! I am now known as Screeching Owl,, but that was not always my name. Those of us who changed their names had to have a special meeting with Starclan and got another naming ceremony. We are forbbin to share our old names due to the vow we made during these ceremonies." Screeching Owl yawns after the last sentence, seemingly exhausted from telling her story. She waves you and the kits away, curling into a ball to sleep outside her den.

I apologize for the lateness in judging this! There are so many amazing entries, I had a hard time picking! Ultimately, I have to go with Moonblaze-Angel! I absolutely adored both the story being told and the personality you give to this old man! Enjoy your new cat! 🥳🎉

But that's not all! I also loved the responses from JaxyTheGhost and Adamented, so you both will be getting runner up cats! Keep an eye out for them in the next day or two! ^^
