Name: Moose
DGAB: Male
Origin: Loner turned Clan elder
Prompt: His favorite story is telling the 'paws how he got his name!
Moose shuffles his paws around, trying to warm his toes up despite the cold earth. The 'paws finally had the time to clean out the den and fix his moss up all cozy like. He'd been gently prodding them to do it all day yesterday.
"How does that look?" One of them asks, the newest apprentice. She's pretty thoughtful, this one, even taking time to place a few feathers from her breakfast in it.
"Mighty fine, there, li'l one. Let me just test it out right quick-" he states as he gently places himself in the nest. A few years back, he might have been crabby with the old man treatment, but now his bones were grateful for the extra padding and warmth in the nest. "Oh yes, this will do nicely."
He turns to eye the two new 'paws, both named this moon. He hadn't had time to chat with them much and that bothered him.
"Well now, I s'pose I owe you two a story, now, don't I? Settle in here, you can take Cloudflower's nest for now. She likes to sun on the rocks in leaffall, she don't need it." He pauses as the two gingerly sit in the freshly made moss, slowly sinking in. Two bundles of fluff they are. He knows just the story to get them re-energized for their training.
"Well you two are fresh li'l 'paws, ain't ya, and I doubt you know much about me. I'll just have to fix that! You twos know I'm Moose, but did I ever tell you why I kept that name and not a clan name? I'm the reason the Clan is named MooseClan ya know!"
The two 'paws exchange glances, bewildered. How come the Clan is named after this old coot? Moose starts up again.
"Well before I was such an experienced young adventurer as I am, I used ta be a loner. I know! Me, without anyone to tell stories to. A downright shame. " The kits giggle at this. "It was just me, see, and this one twoleg who came into the forest every now and then. And I know Minthop says all the uprights are bad and all, but not this one. She was a real catch, she was, always bringing me treats. We'd walk all around the forest together, slow like o' course, for her slow walk."
He pictured the first time they'd met, when she brought him a piece of meat. "We went around the normal paths down, down by the end o' the river, near twoleg place. Well, one day, she decided to go real far like. Right on up to the waterfall, right past the edge of our territory here. She was young, I think, like you two, and like me." More giggles from the 'paws.
"She didn't know any better but it was right about the time the moose all come out and get drinks o' water there. She was climbing all around the rocks and being a real twoleg, she was. Well, at one point, it's just us, an we hear a weird noise. And I knows it's a moose, of course, 'cause I'm a real smart cat, but she was just a silly twoleg. And she goes right towards it! And I'm tryna warn her, tripping her up and yowling like, but then she keeps on going. I didn't want to give our position away o' course, so I stopped yowling and just followed along."
"What next? What next? Did you find the moose?" One of the 'paws interrupts, enraptured by the story.
"I'm gettin' to it! Where was I? Oh right, we was just getting to the moose. My upright, she goes right into the clearing with it. I stop at the side, see, and she does, too, just a bit in front. And that's when it spots us! And they're big, mean, creatures see, much worse than foxes or eagles or badgers! And it spots us. My upright, she doesn't even move, puts out a hand like she's tryna give it food! And that moose roars, all scary like, and she freezes! Scared her right near to death. And then it charges us, and we'll, I wasn't havin' that."
He crouches low in his nest, mimicking his words. "I crouched down and I ran right at it! Yelled all the curse words I knew, too, woulda made your mom cuff me on the ears. I got real close and jumped up onto its side and clawed my way up its back. I started just clawing and scratching away. It tried to buck me off, but I was just too strong. It turned right around, away from that twoleg, and started back the way it came from. I jumped off right before it left the clearing." The two kits sat shocked, and mighty impressed.
"Well, since that day, she called me Moose. And Moose I was. I been telling everyone since then. And someday, when you 'paws earn your warrior name, you'd better come back an' tell me just how it happened. Ya hear?"
