When she was still a young pup, Chilli's family visited a friend who'd recently whelped herself. Chilli was instantly intrigued, staring wide eyed at the helpless balls of fur. She'd tried to get a closer look, but
the mother let out a low growl which startled her. The pale collie apologiesed, and all Chilli could feel was respect for the protectiveness, and the love for her puppies that sparkled in her eyes.
Her family grew close with the mother and her
three pups. With the advantage of being a few months older than them, when she'd earned the mother's trust she was invited to help with some of the caretaking. Her favourite task was organising the pups play area while they were out with their mother. She would move the toys that were scattered across, wait for the humans to clean the area, and then focus carefully on arranging the toys it what looked like a tidy yet fun manner. She knew that when the puppies returned they would begin playing delicately as they inspected each toy, but it wouldn't be long before it looked as if a raging storm had passed though. Chilli didn't mind this. Some might think it unnecessary when it would just be ruined, but she knew it wasn't about the future, it was about living in the moment with these small bundles, because it wouldn't be long before they grew!
When the puppies had outgrown their playarea and had developed enough to not only talk to Chilli, but use their imagination, she took it upon herself to think up and run the most fun games she could imagine! Sure, she was approaching the age where she'd no longer be considered a puppy, and others her age were desperate to grow up, she was more than content to spin stories and worlds around the pups with nothing but words and ordinary objects. She grew particularly close with the
female pup, who like her, adored playing games where they had young pups of their own. Sure, the male dogs would play that game at times too, but their heart wasn't in it the same way.
Now a young adult, Chilli felt the call of adventure. She left her home, intent to explore what the world had to offer, as well as making herself known in the sporting world. With rosettes to collect and a sense of freedom, Chilli couldn't imagine anything worse than having pups. Gone was the childlike wonder. When she'd see other dogs with pups of their own, all she could think about were the cons. She would cringe at the sight of them having to clean up their mess, pin her ears back at their incessant whines, and couldn't help but think she would never want a pup for herself as long as she lived. She didn't hate puppies per say, but she sure found them and annoyance!
Having had a taste of freedom, homesickness crept into her heart. While she didn't want to return to her parent's home, she wanted somewhere stable to call her own. That's when she remembered her old friend, the mother and her pups. Surely they'd be adults by now? Drawn on with excitement filling her heart, she travelled to CreekShadow Kennel. She wondered what their reunion would be like; would the pups remember her? Or had they been too young at the time? What she hadn't expected, was to see her friend nursing
two pups of her own, alongside a loving
mate. She was welcomed with open arms, and couldn't help but feel the warm embrace of motherhood. To see the bond of parents and their children. She felt it then, in her heart, that she wanted to share this with someone. For them to come together and raise their own pups, from newborns to adults. Because it was worth it, all the sacrifices and mess, to have that joy, and be the best mother she could be. And to
share her love of puppies, just like that mother did with her all those years ago, and her friend was doing now.
