Hopefully not a downer but I wanted to pay homage to the two animals I think of first when I think of ivory-the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker and elephants (specifically Super Tuskers).
Bairdii -is part of the scientific name for the now extinct (assumed) Cuba Ivory-Billed Woodpecker
Satao- Satao was the name of one of the most well known Super Tuskers. Super tuskers are bull African Elephants that have extra large tusks (a single tusk that weighs over 100lbs!). Larger females are known as Iconic Cows. Unfortunately, less than 10 remain. Elephants are targets by poachers for their tusks of ivory and Super Tuskers make an even bigger target. Satao was killed due to poachers. There are several organizations and groups dedicated to patrolling and looking out for the remaining giants!
