Range Trotter #STF017

Postby Pandapop » Thu May 09, 2024 6:48 pm

Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness. With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

This Trotter is pretty much convinced that they're the pirate in this scenario.
They won't leave until you recognize that, so you'll have to find some way to humor them.
Maybe by making them a wanted poster?
(Interpret this any way you wish, my favorite entry wins.)

Sometimes doing something right means going old-school, and in this case? We're going really old-school.

All the way back to Andean South America and quipu.

Quipu is a system of recording information via knots in strings. There's a tremendous amount we don't know about it still, but as far as we can tell, everything from the type of fibers used to weave a string to the position of knots along its length and the color it was dyed meant something. A long red string with three knots at the top might communicate the number of people living in a specific city, while a short blue string with twelve knots towards the bottom might be a merchant's tally of the summer's transactions. String a bunch of these together like so, and you can communicate some pretty complicated messages!

But how do we apply that to a trotter?

Well, we start by acquiring several lengths of fiber. Our trotter friend is semiaquatic, so we'll have to opt for materials can can withstand salt water. Properly tanned and greased leather, manila fiber, various bark fibers, and jute can all withstand immersion, so we'll go with those!

Our next step is encoding our message. No one actually knows precisely what quipu translate to, so we're free to think up our own cipher. Once we've puzzled that out- and written it down, for goodness' sake!- we have to lay out all of our strings, cut them to size, and tie knots in all the appropriate places. As for our message... anything worth doing is worth overdoing, so let's go big: "Uncatchable, unbreakable, the scourge of the seven seas - Reward: Fame and glory beyond your wildest imaginings'.

Yeah, that ought to get the message across.

Of course, quipu can involve a degree of decoration, and this one is no exception. Let's include a palm-sized disc of wood as the quipu's base, its surface polished mirror-smooth and carved with the image of a horse erupting from the surf. Not just any horse, of course, oh no- those fins and dashing black markings leave no question that it's Scourge doing his best dolphin impression.

Once all that's done, we can be pretty darn sure we've made a memorable, if decidedly atypical, wanted poster. All that's left is to tie the quipu around Scourge's neck.

After all, what good is a work of art if it isn't shown off?
