Settling on one orca was impossible -- I wound up with three, and they all fit together quite well, thematically and name-wise.
Luna was a young male calf that wound up alone in Puget Sound. He spent a couple of years trying to connect with humans while people were ordered to leave him alone, before he met a rough end while playing in a boat's wake before anyone could figure out how to reunite him with his family.
Star has an amazing story - and it's just about as sad as Luna's. Star was born to Southern Resident Orca Polaris, and at age six, became an older sister to a little male calf, Dipper. However, nursing proved to be too taxing on Polaris, and she disappeared months after Dipper was born. Star fought hard to save her little brother, trying to feed him salmon and holding him at the surface to breathe, but he, too, slipped away later that same month. She now travels with her well-known aunt, J35/Tahlequah, the orca mother known for her "tour of grief" in 2018.
And then there's Tl'uk. He was very well-known among those who watch orcas in Puget Sound because he wasn't black and white, but a silvery grey and white, colors that have been noted in only a precious few individuals, only one of which surviving today. This coloration left his scars from rake marks a bright silver-white against his skin. His form of leucism has been attributed to his disappearance at the age of two. His name means "Moon".
