Dziady is an ancient Slavic counterpart to Halloween, nowadays nearly forgotten and not celebrated aside from pagan circles due to aggressive christianization during Medieval times.

"Feasting at burial grounds was seen as a form of spending time with those long-gone and honouring them. It included leaving food, often bread and honey, on their graves as gifts for their souls." During the celebrations, the people gathered would help souls lost on their way to the afterlife reach their destination, ie. by fulfilling their last wishes.

"An important element of the tradition of Dziady are Karaboshka masks. Such a mask, made of clay or wood, was worn to impersonate the deceased during the custom of leading spirits back to the afterworld." They also protect the wearer's face from being seen - and remembered - by bitter spirits that may enter this realm when the gates of afterlife are open during celebrations by the sacred fire.
