A crash of thunder shook the world around Mist as she hurriedly made her way through the forest. Rain and leaf debris weigh down her fur, making it harder and harder to run. In her periphery she sees it again- a shadowy figure.
A week ago she stumbled upon a onyx black pendant specked with dirt and grime. It had been buried deep in her garden and was only unearthed because she was breaking up soil for new flowers. How did it end up there? Unsure of what to do, she brought it to the stream by her den to clean it. She planned to ask around about it's owner the next time she went to the main area. However, ever since there has been this figure following her around. After a walk one afternoon she noticed it- a Storkie, translucent and dark grey. She tries to inspect it closer but every time she tries, it fades from view. Things also keep moving around her den at the oddest places. She was sure she left out some plants to dry in the sun, but when she came back inside they were in her bed! After a week of things getting worse and more frequent, Mist had decided it was enough. It all started after she found the pendant- it has to be related. Could the pendant have been cursed, and if so, her as well?
When she was a kit her mother would take her to visit a lake- it was said to be the purest water in the forest, and they would spend half the day sunning by the clear waves lapping onto the rocks. The place felt peaceful and magical. If anything could cleanse her of this curse, the water could! However, it's in the deepest part of the forest and the light is fading fast. She grabs the pendant and pulls the leather cord it sits on and pulls it over her head, feeling its weight settle against her fur.
Now, the sun is almost beyond the horizon, the chill making the bright ball in the sky above a faint memory. Mist's paws ache from trying to stay upright on the loose stones scattered over the muddy ground. It appears again just a few feet away- slim, dark, and large. A lightning strike illuminates the area, blinding her for a moment and causing her to stumble. When she shakes the spots from her eyes, the figure is gone once more.
Finally, she seems the shimmer of water up ahead- the rich, dark red of the sky reflected in its depths. She reaches the edge of the lake and pulls the pendant from around her neck and clamps the cord in her teeth. Breathing deeply through her nose to steady herself, she takes the first step into the water. An icy chill shoots up from her paw up to her neck, and by the time she has become mostly engulfed by the water, her body has gone numb. Gazing up, she sees the figure again between the nearby trees as a green flash lights up the sky above the water. Warmth seeps through her as the pendant begins to brighten and then glow from within. The figure also begins to shimmer, lighten, and then fade before her eyes. Peace settles over her as she knows that whatever curse had been lain has now been lifted.
