The early morning sun warmed the fur on their back. As they walked along the dirt road through the town they hummed a little tune to themselves. They’d never really travelled very far up the mountain, so they figured, Why not? Let’s see what’s up here. The pathway slowly transformed from an open grassland to a more forested mountainside. This path below their feet, must’ve been carved out of the mountain over decades by the storkies before them. They turned their next corner. They froze. They could hear voices, but… What was anyone doing up here? They darted quietly into the bushes on the side of the path and strained their ears to listen in and eavesdrop.
“I finally lit a fire without touching it! I can’t believe it! I actually did it!” They heard a playful voice say.
“That’s so exciting! I’m so proud of you for finally conquering one of your fears!” A bright voice called out. Everything seemed normal, maybe these storkies just like the scenic mountain views?
“Yay! I’m sure Auryn will appreciate your help with the morning firelighting! On a similar note, I’m getting better at my death casting” A strangely warm voice continued.
Our storkie’s blood ran cold at the mention of death magic. Was this… For real…? They HAD to warn the town. They crept forwards towards the edge just to see who these conspirators might be.
They couldn’t make out much more than just the silhouette of the source of the bright voice. A Fifth leg? Is that…? Elara? The five-legged Lunar-born?
They hurried back the way they came, they didn’t want to risk getting caught eavesdropping.
Once they were down the mountain, they rushed over to Auryn’s blacksmith, their paws striking the dirt in a frantic rhythm. Breathlessly they continued across town, Auryn lived on almost the total opposite side of town. They silently wished that they didn’t live so heckin’ far.
At last they saw Auryns, and at last they hurried inside, “Auryn I- I just- I- Uh-”
“Woah child take a second to breathe, you look like you’ve seen a ghost” Auryn’s soothing voice filled their ears.
They took a deep breath, fighting through the panic “A secret. I’ve found a secret, a dangerous secret Auryn”
“No need to panic child, we are safe in here. What is it child, what did you find?”
“There’s a death storkie up on the mountain-”
Auryn sighed a relieved sigh “Not to worry, some people are born with unfortunate magics…”
“No Auryn, she’s practising her magic.”
Auryn’s eyes widened in terror, he didn’t like to judge those with their unfortunate magics… but a practising death magician was a danger to the whole town…
“I saw Elara there… What do we do Auryn?”
“Elara? Wh- Why would she be…? I- I think we try to quietly get the word out, it would be unwise to make a scene, but also I think we should warn people for their safety, can you run to all the shopkeeps around here and tell them to warn their customers not to go up the mountain? Make sure to mention to not say anything to Elara.”
