Goodbye
On the night that Hemlock left for good, KITTEN fell in and out of a light sleep. Moonflower sometimes positioned herself near the entrance of the den to "make sure no one came in" but she was sound asleep next to Nightshade. KITTEN looked around the shared den... one cat was missing. Maybe Hemlock couldn't sleep either? A trail of paw prints led away from the den, but snow was beginning to fall and would quickly cover the tracks. She recalled the argument Moonflower and Hemlock had had the night before, another fight about how Hemlock couldn't stand this place. KITTEN always had a hard time deciding what they wanted to do. Their home in Diamond Falls was all they knew, but their brothers spoke of places where the landscape wasn't covered in snow and ice. They spoke of meadows filled with colorful flowers and a warm, sandy seaside. Their sister, Moonflower, was adamantly against any venture outside of their home. So much so that it caused tension. KITTEN worried about disappointing their sister, but at the same time they worried about their brother's happiness. What if... ? No... KITTEN sped up. They reached the top of the hill and saw a flash of fur through the white flakes. Hemlock paused, just a moment. His violet eyes met theirs across the distance. KITTEN wanted to call out, but instead they silently watched as their brother fled, until their vision grew blurry with tears.
Goodbye, brother. That wasn't the only time they said goodbye to one of their siblings. Moonflower was in an especially good mood the day of the accident, and even Nightshade was in bright spirits. Nightshade suggested they play a game on the ice. It should not have ended the way it did. They remembered the creature's shadow suddenly appearing beneath him, registering way too late what it meant. The crack of the ice. They remembered Moonflower shoving them, pushing them out of harms way. They remembered Nightshade's cry of pain, the splash, the silence that followed. He had always talked about exploring. KITTEN hoped he got to travel in his next life.
On the day that Moonflower disappeared, KITTEN didn't get a goodbye. For weeks, Moonflower had been talking about a cat she met in her dreams. Someone named Jinx. He was going to meet her there in Diamond Falls one day, she said. KITTEN was excited about the idea of more company... it had grown lonely without their brothers. Maybe Moonflower and Jinx would have kittens one day. It never made sense when Moonflower left to meet Jinx at the waterfall and never came back. Moonflower loved Diamond Falls. Why would she leave when she had tried to hard to convince everyone to stay? KITTEN would never figure out why their sister disappeared.
