Maurice has always been an odd iron heart, even since he was very little. He was less combative than others in his school, who enjoy play fighting on the lawn. He preferred to sit in and read books or scribble notes in his own journal. Maurice was often watching others, though, even if he wasn’t socializing with them. His people watching came mostly for the purposes of studying how an iron heart was supposed to act anyway. He’d watch people of all different sorts to try and get an idea… though he ended up coming up more confused than the last every time. Maurice hadn’t the faintest clue how others of his species nor the combat they were raised for worked— which left him in a very odd predicament.
He was very shy and mild mannered, he kept to himself, and he preferred poetry and reading to throwing paws. Maurice was… decidedly odd. But he spent his childhood watching people, taking mindful strolls down unmarked streams, working on maps and any number of other intellectual pursuits. He just preferred it for reasons he couldn’t explain. He supposed he just didn’t have the same aptitudes everyone else did— and while he tried once or twice to love sparring and play battles, he never once did find a passion for it the way his friends and litter mates could. Instead his love was for books, and his bookish nature led him to being somewhat alone for his youth, as most other iron hearts struggled to see what he saw in books, in much the same way he didn’t understand what they saw in sparring. Maurice understood it, and that was okay with him.
