Name Meaning: Named after my best friend who is responsible for opening my mind and introducing me to the lgbtqia+ community! Without them I don't know how I would've learned everything that I did, and dare I say without them I wouldn't have realized that it's okay to be different! They really did show me that I could love whoever I wanted and identify in any way that felt comfortable to me. I'll never forget the day they defended me when someone I trusted put me down about my sexuality, saying it "just didnt make sense" and how it was "stupid" and how they couldn't support me. Maxx was amazing, and is currently amazing! Not only have they grown, but as have I- all thanks to them! <33
Prompt: The Village opens with a powerful quote in it's music video, “In nature, a flock will attack any bird that is more colorful than the others because being different is seen as a threat.” The video itself portrays the struggles of a transgender teenager who's family doesn't understand what they're going through, with one of their parent figures disapproving of them wearing different clothes and shaving their head. All the while, the lyrics "there's nothing wrong with you, it's true." and "there's something wrong with the village" being repeated in the song, yearning to tell any listeners who are in a similar situation, that they are who they are meant to be, and if anyone can't come to terms with it- then there's something wrong with them.

I myself can relate to the video, even though it's not my same situation, I think it's still a powerful message for anyone in the lgbtqia+ community. If you identify as homosexual, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, or any other sexuality out there- and any gender- that there's nothing wrong with you and you are who you are meant to be. This is you and you are perfect. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is the one in the wrong. And even though it's a song geared towards those who are in the community, I believe anyone can relate to it. If anyone tries to tell you to not express yourself in the way you want to- then they're wrong. Even if it's as simple as wanting shorter hair, or if you want to start wearing makeup. Live your life to the fullest and live true to yourself, you deserve it.

I have my best friend to thank, for introducing me to this song back in 2018. I have them to thank for trusting me enough to tell me that their true name and true pronouns were different from the ones I had been used to. I can't ever remember questioning them or thinking of it as odd. I will admit it took longer than it should have for me to get used to their name, but in the end I can't ever remember them being anyone other than who they are today! Not only did my best friend introduce me to this song and expand my knowledge of the lgbtqia+ community, but they helped me and supported me when the people I thought had my back turned on me after I realized I was far more than an ally to the community. I will never forget that day, because it was the day I realized that anyone who tried to put me down about my identity, was someone not worth entertaining. After all, it wasn't up to me to make them come to terms with who I was, it was up to them.

This song reminds me of all the friendships I've had with girls since a young age - when I didn't even know what being gay was to when I was figuring out my sexuality to now. It makes me feel so nostalgic and I can hardly keep myself together listening to it because it brings back so many memories and emotions; it's such a good portrayal of finding yourself, young queer love & friendship. It's a pretty recent song but it genuinely means everything to me.

Girls Like Girls is a very popular song, for sure, but it was also the first WLW music video I'd ever seen... and I found it when I was much younger. It was so important for me to see that kind of beautiful and gentle representation, and it really helped me feel ok with liking girls, which felt so wrong when I was a kid. I had no exposure to LGBTQIA+ people as a kid, and there is very little even now as I'm living in the same city I've been in my entire life, and exposure to diversity is necessary in finding a place of belonging in life. GLG will forever remain one of the most important songs I've listened to, and the music video was a wonderful introduction to the sweet and safe feeling that I would later associate with WLW.

This song holds an incredibly special place in my heart. When I first heard it, I didn't even know I was queer. Then I realized I was ace, and then I got a crush on my roommate in college. (Long story, incredibly shortened). But I didn't even realize it was a crush. I didn't know how to categorize my feelings. Then I listened to this song again. And again, and again, and again. And I realized I was in love with her. This song helped me realize I was a lesbian. I don't know if I would be who I am today, out and proud and happily gay, if I hadn't heard this song when I heard it. Every time I hear it I'm transported to that scared girl that I was, who finally felt just a little bit seen, just a little bit better, reading the comments of that video and hearing Dodie sing this.

This one might feel like a stretch to some people haha. The song itself is described as being about “…two old friends existing in two separate realities. It’s a conversation about the lives they lived, the consequences of life’s decisions, and finding purpose in trying to be better” by Andy Hull. Due to a lot of mental health problems and stuff I’ve been reflecting on how my mental health has effected others, and how much of it was caused by gender dysphoria i didn’t have a name for. I’ve lost friends, good people, because i didn’t have the words for my problems and lashed out. The bridge says,
“Right by the entrance, you broke
Finally, reality's taking its hold
You're not who you were, but you can't let it go
You're not where you're from, but you're always alone

I feel like this kind of sums up my feelings for the past few months since i’ve been released from the hospital. Kind of like, acknowledging that the person i was and the people who were around me at the time were trying the best with what resources they had, and that I need to forgive the kid I was and be who he needs to be. Someone i could have been proud of and looked up to. I am who I am, and that isn’t not bad.

My first contact with the lgbtqia+ community would be with no doubt listening to Queen. Their lyrics are so pure, and it doesn't matter what you are looking for in love, but sooner or later you'll identify with this song so much. We should never put chains to our feelings, we should not care what others could think about us or our feelings! Let's just love!
