Being young and scrappy had never really bothered this kit. Oh no, the young up-and-coming prankster of the century had never been bothered by being outcast, nor by being taken in by, effectively, the clan of rejects. Being the runt of the litter, they thought, gave them the home field advantage. People didn't think much of them-- and they could use that to their advantage. Like they were going to do today, of course.
They peered up over the brush at Sunnytail, a large but relatively dumb tom cat. Sunnytail was nice and all, really he was, and under normal circumstances they wouldn't have chosen Sunny as their victim of choice... But Sunnytail hadn't taken them on patrol after he'd explicitly promised. This innocent mistake was the height of double-crossing, in this kit's humble opinion, and so they lay in wait as their prank unfolded.
The day before all the cats in the clan had gone on a walk around a new piece of territory to explore-- and the young kit had decided that they were going to trick the infamously daft Sunnytail into thinking it never happened. They went to every cat in the clan practically begging them to play along with their little joke-- though some took less convincing than others, Silverbane just accepted outright with no questions asked, but others like Redmoon were harder to convince because they were more steadfast in their morals. Despite obstacles, however, the kit managed to convince their peers that this prank was just a harmless bit of fun, and that it wouldn't hurt anyone except perhaps Sunny's last remaining braincell. That joke earned a snort from Redmoon, who had relented finally to the plan, and thus all was in place.
The kit tailed Sunny around as he went about his day, trying to talk to other cats about a trip they'd taken yesterday only to be looked at like a fool. Each cat laughed it off, telling Sunnytail he must've had some daydream, because that hadn't happened. Silverbane looked at him blankly and rolled his eyes, just skulking off like Sunny had said something exceptionally dumb, and Redmoon tried her best to let him down easy. But the fact remained that no matter how hard Sunnytail looked, all traces of the trip had been erased, and everyone was in on the joke... except him. The kit snickered. That would teach him to not hold true to his word!
But as the day wore on, Sunnytail started to become distressed. He didn't seem angry, the kit noticed, just... sad. Embarrassed, almost. He sat by the edge of the pond, a task he never did due to being a wary fire elemental, and sulked, peering down at his reflection and wondering if he really was just daft. Seeing Sunnytail, usually so bubbly, so earnestly miserable made the kit cave. It wasn't... supposed to hurt anyone. Not even Sunny's remaining singular braincell. The kit skulked out of their hiding spot and gently put a paw on Sunnytail's shoulder, and came clean, explaining the whole prank and the dumb reason for doing it. They'd expected Sunny to be furious for putting them through the ringer, all for a petty missed patrol, but...
Sunnytail laughed. The jubilant energy returned to him all at once, and he laughed like he had almost forgotten how to. "You got me good!" He declared, with another guffaw, "We'll have to go on patrol tomorrow-- for real, okay? I'm sorry I blew you off. Your prank was hilarious, though! You almost had me, for real!"
The kit, slowly, almost hesitantly, started to laugh too, and felt the anxiety ease off as Sunnytail reassured them. Thank goodness.
