The wind tore through the vast peaks as the stranger, a pure black cat, trudged through the ankle-high snowbanks. He was not alone, however - carried deftly in his jaws was a small, white kitten - fur marked by small blue-grey patches. His gaze fixed in front of him as he kept walking, trying to see if he was nearing his destination. He had been told a group was here - another colony, tucked within a small clearing through the middle of the peaks.
He had to find them. He had no other choice.
Casting one last glance over his shoulder to ensure he wasn’t being followed, he pushed onward, hearing the kitten he was carrying give a noise of objection. He wanted to apologize, but he didn’t have time. He had to keep moving.
He drew ever closer, and then he heard someone ahead.
“Stop.” They called out, and the stranger could make out a grey shape with rosette spots. They drew closer, only then noticing the kitten he was carrying, and the desperation on his face. “...Come, quickly.”

The clearing was much warmer than outside, in the peaks. He had to wonder how it was, but figured it might be fire or air magic keeping the temperature warm. He felt safe enough to set the kitten down, and he gave her a nudge as she complained again. A tortoiseshell approached, and her fiery orange gaze met his own. He shrunk back a little.
“Why have you come here?” She stated simply.
“I need you to take this kitten.” He replied, looking down to the white ball of fur briefly. “She, we were driven out of our colony by some sort of creature, and we can’t go back. There’s nothing left for us there.”
Partridge’s gaze narrowed, almost as if she were unconvinced. “Really now?”
“You have to believe me. I saw them with my own eyes, these big, glowering creatures with teeth that tore our home to shreds. She can’t go back there.” He shook his head, desperate. “I’ll leave, and you won’t see me on your land again, but you have to take her. She won’t survive out there on her own, and she won’t if I’m the only one taking care of her.”
Frostbite approached Partridge, whispering something to her. The stranger could see the tortie’s expression shift to one of contemplation, before she gave a begrudging sigh. “...Very well. I am certainly still skeptical of what you’ve told me, but Frostbite has convinced me that we can’t let a kitten die out there.”
He seemed relieved, and he watched a blue & white cat come and gingerly collect the little one to carry her off into a small cleft den near the edge of the clearing. “This means more than you know, I promise.”
“But I will be clear about this. We’ll take care of her and she’ll be one of our own, but you will not be welcome here once you leave. If we see you again, you will not leave here unscathed.”
“Understood.” He gave a nod of his head, turning to head back the way he’d come. “Take care of her. She’s somethin’ special, at least I think so.”
Partridge watched him leave, and she sighed. She glanced in the direction Holo had gone with the kitten, and she walked over to the two of them on dainty paws.
“I think she’ll be fine, she’s just a little shaken up is all.” Holo looked up to Partridge after a moment. “Are you really skeptical of what he told you happened to his colony?”
“We can’t afford not to be.” She replied. “If it happens to be true, I’m certain we’ll get word of it from a messenger.”
Holo clearly didn’t look happy with this response, but they didn’t question it. “So what are we going to do?”
“She’s staying here. You’re versed enough with taking care of kittens, aren’t you?”
“O-Of course! What makes you think otherwise?” Holo sputtered, trying not to jostle the now sleeping kitten too much. “I’ll certainly do my best.”
“I expect nothing less.” Partridge replied. “So, what are you calling her?”
Holo fell quiet, lost in thought for a brief moment.
“..I’ll call her Hymnal, I think.”
