Winter's Blessing was born in December, during the first heavy snowfall of the year. It was a long and difficult birth, and when she was finally born, Winter's Blessing was not well. Over the course of several weeks, she had a constant watch and several vet calls. The entire time, she was very happy and calm, enjoying the care and attention from everyone. She grew strong and healthy, and gained the name Joy for her upbeat and friendly attitude.

Although her first weeks of life were extremely tough, Joy became an adventurous yearling. She was constantly racing about and making the most of each day. A beautiful sunny day with crisp breeze? Time to gallop about and play! A sweltering day? She'd spend the day dozing in the shade. Besides making the most of each day, Joy also started making mischief. If a groom looked away, Joy would grab a brush and try to hide it. They were also several times she was found wandering through the stables when she should have been in her locked stall. She loved playing tricks on people, and her nickering sounded as though she was laughing at these pranks.

But the most important part of Joy's personality would be her caring heart. An orphaned foal was brought to Olympia Stables when Joy was three. The foal was placed in its own stall with Joy's stall a few doors down. The workers were finishing some paperwork in a backroom when they heard hoofbeats walking through the barn. They hurried back out only to see Joy unlatching the foal's stall. Joy couldn't stand to see the poor foal all alone, so she went to comfort them herself. Joy became a foster mother for this foal, and several others throughout the years.
