Username: Oppressed Opossum
Name: FMK"s You Got a Friend in Me aka "Taleggio"
Name Meaning(s): Run on of the song by Randy Newman and having some extra legs - name matches with their best friend!
Gender: Male
Prompt:

On a stormy night a pup was born with their two siblings. They were an unplanned litter and very sickly. Taleggio was the only one to pull through but development was slow and he was so little. The pup had extra legs and was given a rather grim outcome by a vet as he was weak and most born out of standard hardly made it. It was vet visit after vet visit. Any sniffle, any cry. There were nights he and his momma sat in an overnight vet to watch over them. It was a rollercoaster of a beginning. After getting through the first two weeks it was decided they would not give up on the little life. And he was the last to give up, he was headstrong with a blossoming personality. He was curious and eager to learn about his new world. He was given a name, Taleggio. Lovingly named after a type of cheese. Taleggio had to learn which legs were used for walking and which were his extra decorations. It was not long he discovered he could hold objects with his little legs as he ran around, which resulted in many sticks being held between his little paws as he tumbled into walls and other people as well. Taleggio loved to play. Unfortunately, his looks often turned other pups and collies away and the only one who didn't quite care was the barn cat. In fact, cared so little that she wouldn't even acknowledge him.

Taleggio, even though much alive, was deathly lonely. He yearned for another four.. or six.. legged friend to play with. It was not long before a local shelter contacted Farrowmoor with a special needs 8 month old pup. She was a double merle, growth stunted, completely blind aussie mix. Her name is Asiago. A play date was setup between the two of them to see if they would be a good fit. The day of the play date came and Taleggio saw the bright white pup and bounded towards her. Initially, Asiago was spooked and growled and barked.. at the sky. Taleggio, confused, took a step back and gave a lighthearted yip and did a play bow at Asiago. The little lady tilted her head and yipped back but did not do a play bow.. this of course confused Taleggio. He didn't understand why this potential friend acted different. So he sat back and waited and gave another soft bark. Asiago reciprocated. She leapt forward with a partial play bow and bounced to the left of him. Taleggio understood -- she couldn't see! Taleggio gave a touch to her shoulder with her nose and they immediately ran together. Asiago tumbled to the ground and barked forward, looking for where Taleggio may have gone. Taleggio barked back and grabbed a ball on the ground with his jaws before dropping it between his two runty legs and grabbed a second one in his jaws. He bounded towards Asiago and dropped the ball he held in his paws next to Asiago. She perked her ears at the and after a couple attempts grabbed it with her soft mouth. Taleggio and Asiago played for a bit before tiring out. Asiago sat down and Taleggio sat down next to her, his head resting on top of hers and hugged her with his two little legs. He was happy to finally have found a best friend.

    Name: Mudpie
Name Meaning(s): Largely in relation to his colouration, as well as that a child named him.
    Gender: Male
    Prompt:
Squinting his eyes open for the first time, the small pup took in the harsh light of reality. With a whimper the small pup whipped his head around following the most familiar scent to this small pup. It was the first time he had seen his mother. She had fed him and cleaned him for these beginning weeks of his life. Among the scents of his littermates, this small pup turned to look back at an older gentleman hovering over the mother and her pups. The man's smell was the one that had clutched him tightly in rough, calloused hands and gently bottle fed the pup during that first week of life.
"Hey there, little spider. You're a tough little guy aren't ya?" The man spoke, the voice was one that he knew well. The warm hands lifted him from the blankets to be held against clothes that stank of unfamiliar dogs and humans. "Now, I know you're not going to be no working dog, spidey. But my little girl really likes you, so you better stay strong, hm?" The rough voice had a tickle of emotion. The pup was small. He didn't look like a typical pup. The man knew the family would be heartbroken if the little guy didn't make it, but he was at an age now that it was more confident.
The pup grew well. He always lagged behind his siblings, but he was gaining and that was good sign. The man may have babied him more than the rest of the litter, keeping him inside longer and being more caution of new animals being introduced. When the rest of the litter eventually went to their new homes, the man and his daughter could dedicate all their time to the little pup.
With the cooler weather and the autumn leaves falling, they wanted to take full advantage of the festive feeling of the mild but still a little damp weather. The girl and her pup would run from muddy puddles while her dad raked the red and orange leaves into neat, tidy piles. But those heaps of leaves were tempting, the troublesome duo terrorised the dad by jumping into each and every pile that he arranged until he eventually decided that the fun and games were over: they had to find something else to do.
While he finished up with the leaves, the girl and the pup went hunting for bugs; eventually she came to the conclusion that she should build a mud house for the bugs while the pup rested by her side. Once finished with the leaves, the dad came over to the pair to watch what they were doing: "Is Spider lending you a paw or six?"
"Dad, you can't call him Spider."
    "Why not?"
"Spiders have eight legs, not six."
Of course, she was right. The dad sat down in the mud besides the girl and her pup, he gently pet the small dog's head and cracked a smile as he yipped and wagged his tail.
    "So, what do you suggest?"
"Mudpie!" The girl exclaimed, patting the dog with her incredibly muddy hands as she quickly decided upon his name.
"Hey, hey! You're going to have to give him a bath, not me!" He chuckled as he shooed her hands away to keep the dirt getting rubbed to deep into his coat. He looked to the dog, still happily wagging his tail, "Do you like Mudpie?" The happy expression on the dog's face would have been there regardless of what he had just said, but the name simply felt right, "Looks like you've got an official name, tough guy."

    name: chardy
    name meaning:
with its origin in hindi, the meaning is a little more than simply alone. the meaning is โ€˜a burning fire that desires love and yet is always alone.โ€™

    gender: male
    prompt:
    iโ€™m sorry iโ€™m sorry iโ€™m sorry, i didnโ€™t mean for this. i just wanted- i just- i didnโ€™t want this. iโ€™m so sorry, please, please believe me. i- i just wanted a familyโ€ฆ

chardy remembers the stories of heroโ€™s and villains that his parents used to tell him. of how at the last minute, the hero would come down, power coursing through their body, and defeat the villain. he remembered how he was told that heroโ€™s always got the fame and glory, no matter the destruction that flowed in their wake. when chardy was a young pup, he wanted to be a hero. he wanted to help save people and be praised for his good doings. but sadly, the world never worked like that.

he was just four months old when he learned how harsh others can be. chardy knew he was different, he knew that every single day he woke up. he wasnโ€™t blind, he saw the ways the other pups would avoid him or how the adults would look upon him in disgust. it absolutely broke him. with a heavy heart, he grew to hate the second pair of legs attached to his chest. he hoped that a hero would come and save him from the misery of being alone, but none ever did.

so he tried harder. his parents called him a โ€œpeople pleaserโ€, but he didnโ€™t care. he just wanted to be better. he just wanted acceptance. he wanted those other pups to play with him and he wanted to stop those gazes from the adults. chardy knew it was selfish, to want so much, to hope for something so unrealistic. but he couldnโ€™t help himself, he just wanted the validation that the other pups got from their parents. he never received that validation anymore.

iโ€™ll- iโ€™ll keep trying, i promise. iโ€™ll be better, i can be the pup you always wanted. i can be right. i- i can be better for your family.

heroโ€™s and villians are a tale as old as time. even in hundreds of years, stories will still be told of how a powerful being defeated another powerful being to protect helpless citizens. how these heroโ€™s come to the rescue of those in need. but chardy never saw a hero when he needed them the most. he had to become his own hero. he had to pull himself up and push through the tough times. but heโ€™s ok with that, because it made him a better dog.

chardy took lessens from his past, no matter how painful, and used them to his advantage. if he needed to be selfish while doing so, then oh well. because heroโ€™s and villains are just a story, there is no white and black in the world. only shades of grey, and chardy was the lightest shade possible

Name: Boghound's Survivor | Timely
Name Meaning(s):
Gender: Female
Prompt:
Most births at Boghound went smoothly, but tonight a storm was brewing. It wasn't every day a bitch was due to whelp during a hurricane. The hurricane was far enough off that evacuating wasn't necessary, and they had supplies enough to handle anything that happened. Removing her from her whelping box and familiar setting would be more painful than staying, so the decision was made. The little old Louisiana home rocked and swayed with the strong wind gusts just outside. It was hard to believe the house was from the 60s, up until you tried to weather a storm in it. The dam of the litter whined and whimpered as contractions grew. It'd been hours in labour, and absolutely nothing. Finally, a judgement call came across: call in the emergency vet they had on standby.

The storm hit the hardest just as the vet came rushing into the home. The power had been flickering for the last few hours, before dying with a hushed, tired sigh. "Called just in time," the vet murmured as they set to work helping the female. With a few shots and a lot of hard work, finally a puppy was delivered. The vet's job wasn't done yet; the puppy wasn't breathing. It was a frantic effort until suddenly-! A loud cry! It was large, almost overwhelmingly so - no wonder she'd had so much effort. Still, something more.. "She feels empty, but the initial x-rays showed two..." they pondered out loud, before using a light to look at the puppy better. The nearby owner felt faint, grabbing onto the high wall of the whelping box. They counted in their head as the vet counted out loud.

"One, two, three, four... five.. six... Six legs. Lordy lou, that ain't somethin' you see every day," they laughed warmly, rubbing the puppy's back before setting it back down to nurse. "Looks like your two puppies done become one, ma'am," they smiled, looking up at the pale owner.

The puppy had a long road ahead of herself, that was for sure. The owner tried not to get too attached; even though the pup had been larger than normal there was something very runty about them. The way her extra legs twitched conjured imagery of spiders and other such bugs. Although ashamed to admit it, the dam's owner had a hard time looking at the puppy. They'd named her Timely, because the vet had saved the dam and puppy both just in time. Timely went through just about every pitfall a puppy could: pneumonia from aspirating milk, a brief touch with distemper (thankfully it hadn't been too rough and easily passed), and then the worst of all: the puppy killer, parvo.

Timely became a clinic favourite with how unique she was. Despite all of the wrenches thrown her way, Timely wouldn't take any of it sitting down. She was spunky, ready to fight for her little life, and most importantly? She was loud. Ever since her first loud cry from birth she'd never quite shut her mouth. She clawed her way back from near death with parvo, only to be faced with a new unique issue. Her breeder didn't have the room for another companion, and she was a bit of a shameful mark on her champion parents' lines. They surrendered her to the clinic.

It came as a shock to the clinic, but they didn't entirely mind keeping Timely. They decided she'd be a clinic dog once fully recovered. She shocked most owners who walked in, but there was a lot more to her than her extra legs. Timely grew close to the sickly dogs that came in; ones who were effectively hospice cases. She would yap, yap, and yap some more with them; tail wiggling and tongue wagging. She seemed to know when it was their time, and would curl up outside of their cage; fur bristling against theirs through the bars. The vet who had once saved her life would go on to say she was one of the most useful tools in the clinic.

Timely proved to be so much more than her extra legs. Don't believe us? Come on down to the Bogalusa Animal Clinic. We'd love for you to meet her!

    Name: Bug
Name Meaning(s): a small insect; a small arthropod animal that has six legs and generally one or two pairs of wings.
    Gender: female
    Prompt:

    "Look, look!"
    "Shhh... you'll wake them."
    "But I wanna see!"
"You'll get to see, just be patient."

Bleary eyes blinked though sunlight as the small pup raised to head to better hear the commotion happening nearby. A young human and their parent were staring at her, wide-eyed. A warm tongued lapped over her head, suddenly, as her own mother awoke and drew her small body closer.

"Good morning, young one." The deep, familiar voice of her mother soothed her, despite the twinge of anxiety that clung to her words. "The humans have taken a great interest in you, it appears."

As the small pup curled into her mother's warm body, another human appeared from behind the two that stood nearby. They had a clinical look to them, and something about their scent made the pup nervous. Instinct told them that this human was to be feared, and it was proved true as soon as she felt mother's body tense up.

"Be careful, my love." Warm wetness enveloped her body as her mother groomed her, less about getting her clean and more about providing comfort. "Don't let them hurt you."

Hurt me? The pup thought. Was this human going to hurt her? She whimpered.

Seconds later, she was scooped up by the human. Their scent burned her nose as they slipped her into a small cage. Her limbs wriggled in self-defense, but she was weak, and tired.

The day passed as she was poked and prodded and touched all over by hands and sharp objects and cold, cold, cold sticks. She found herself too sleepy to resist, and let it all happen. The clinical-smelling human had proved to be gentle and spoke to her in a soft voice.

She was eventually returned to the room with her mother, who's eyes lit up when she was placed down beside her.

"Hello sweetheart. How are you feeling?" Her voice rumbled softly, making the pup's eyes immediately start to droop. "You look sleepy, come rest beside me."

The mother tucked her pup in close, and stared at her with warmth, love, and a twinge of sadness. She had been her only surviving pup of the litter. Upon her birth, the mother knew that something wasn't right. She was terrified for her pup, scared that she would be taken away, as the other's had been. But every time the humans had taken her pup, she had been returned, smelling odd, but unharmed.

Maybe the humans felt pity for her, maybe they knew how heartbroken she would be if they took away her child. The small snores comforted the mother, as she herself drifted into a sweet sleep.

    -

The next day, a different human child and parent came to see them. This child was quieter than the last, and only had eyes for the pup. The pup felt more awake today, and was bouncing up and down in front of the child. The child giggled, running their hand across the front of their pen and jumping around, watching as the pup followed along, letting out tiny yaps. The human parent watched fondly, as the mother did too. The solidarity they held in that moment was special, watching their children play.

"This puppy, is she sick?" The human parent asked a nearby carer. "Is she... terminal?"

The pup stopped playing at looked up. The waves of sadness flowing off the human made her uncomfortable. She turned to her mother, who also looked worried. The carer stooped down to rub the pup's head through the pen's grate. She smiled, and both dog's immediately felt comforted. The news was good.

"She's perfectly healthy. We've run all the tests we could, she may need to come in for later vet checks, but she's been labeled as adoptable! Her extra legs don't seem to be hindering her at all."

The human, no longer emitting a dampened vibe, turned to their child. "What do you think, kiddo?"

The child poked their small hand through the grate. The pup gave it an approving lick, making sure she got all 6...? fingers. This child was like her! She felt warm inside.

"She's perfect! I think we should call her Bug, because she has 6 legs, like bugs! Just like I have 6 fingers!" The child stood up and pulled on their parent's arm. "Please, can we take them home?"

The pup looked at her mother with glee. Her mother nodded back.

"We're going home, my little Bug."
