Range Trotter #1051

Postby peppster » Mon Oct 25, 2021 3:05 pm

Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness. With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

Prompt: The Aidi is a livestock guardian from Morocco and is associated with the Berber people. In fact, their name is though to be from a Berber word for dog, Aydi. They are also known as the Atlas Mountain Dog, and were once mistakenly known as the Atlas Sheepdog even though the breed is not used to herd sheep. They are also believed to be one of the ancestors of the Great Pyrenees.

The Norwegian Lundehund is a fascinating dog species dating back to the 1500s. I would have gotten one ages ago if there weren't severe inbreeding issues, supposedly caused by initial inbreeding between the 5 founding dogs. It's so bad that half of the population struggles with the Lundehund syndrome, a special group of intestinal disorders, and a few other issues. Many of them die early on, with the syndrome usually kicking in at about 5 years of age without any kind of pre-warning. Some even go as far as to claim that every Lundehund carries the syndrome, but that many just don't show it.
Despite these issues, I love the breed - It's easily the most unique breed out there. The most rare too - There are only approximately 1200 to 1400 of these fellows remaining worldwide. Despite this, they are registered with the AKC and the FCI and there is a crossbreeding program in place, trying to save this unique breed from the bottleneck of inbreeding.

A Lundehund has at least 6 toes and 7-8 pads per paw, this even includes a thumb! Yes, you heard correctly, thumb, with muscles and joints of its own! That way he can walk in uneven areas easily, a great thing for a breed originally meant to hunt birds that live in rocky areas and narrow underground passages (talking of puffins here, which used to be hunted for food by farmers until it was outlawed).
Lundehund heads can be stretched backwards towards their spine easily, this is one flexible dog.
They have special shoulder joints that enable them to move their legs to the sides at a 90 degree angle, almost like a human (there's a video of that and the spine stretch here, it looks frightening because it's so unusual but it doesn't hurt them at all!).
Additionally, they have up to 8 teeth less than common dogs, bred this way so that they don't damage their prey too much.
And, my favorite detail, they can fold their raised ears closed to protect themselves from getting water or dirt into them.

Prompt: Kai Kens are dogs that can grow up to 40 pounds, 19 inches, and mostly come in brindle-like colors. I've personally never heard or seen this breed of the dog until just now as I'm writing this but I find them similar to Belgian Shepherds in a way? They're suitable as family dogs and hunting dogs, surprisingly, and usually can live up to 14-15 years. There isn't an old breed either, originating back in 1997. (allegedly)

Prompt: Norwegian Lundehund
Lunde” is the Norwegian word for the puffin, a bird also known as a sea parrot. The Norwegian Lundehund was bred to hunt puffins, which live on the islands off the west coast of Norway. Puffins were an important source of food for the farmers who lived on those islands.

The Norwegian Lundehund has the same jaw as the Varanger Dog, a fossilized canine discovered in Russia that lived about 5,000 years ago. Both the Varanger Dog and the Norwegian Lundehund have two fewer teeth than all other dog breeds—one fewer tooth on each side of the jaw.

The Lundehund has six fully developed toes on each foot. Four point forward and two point inward, like a human thumb. The extra toes provide more traction and grip when the dog is navigating the steep or slippery rocks and peaks of his Norwegian homeland. The toes also come in handy when the Lundehund is burrowing into a narrow passage to find a puffin's nest.

Actually, they can do much more than just wiggle their ears. The Lundehund can actually close his ears to protect his ear canal. This enables him to keep dirt and water out of his ears when he enters a deep burrow and also has something to do with his need to orient himself in a narrow passageway.

When small island farmers and fishermen began catching puffins with nets, Lundehunds started becoming obsolete. The government also started levying taxes on Lundehunds, so many residents couldn't afford to keep them anymore. By the early 20th century, Lundehund numbers had dwindled to almost nothing.

By the 1930s, the only remaining purebred Lundehunds were found in the fishing village of Mastad on the island of Værøy. If it wasn't for the seclusion offered by Værøy and Lovunden, the Lundehund might have disappeared long before a few key people became interested in the breed. The purebreds survived on the island because it was so isolated from the rest of the world. When an experienced English Setter dog breeder named Eleanor Christie read an article about Lundehunds and decided to breed them, she procured her first dogs from Mastad. Christie's efforts managed to save the breed.

Prompt: Turkish Pointers, aka Catalburun. They're basically heavy-set pointers that have a split nose. As with other pointers they make good hunting dogs. Turkish Pointers are so uncommon outside of Turkey that I don't think they're considered a recognized breed. No one's quite sure where they came from or how they came to be but one theory is that the Spanish brought over the Pachon Navarro
